<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:12</time>
<p>History Podcast I am your host Scott</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:13</time>
<p>here with my wife and historian Jen</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:15</time>
<p>hello</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:16</time>
<p>on this podcast we talk about history's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:19</time>
<p>continuing impact on us and our personal</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:21</time>
<p>journey through YouTube as we continue</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:23</time>
<p>to explore record and share our history</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:25</time>
<p>walks with you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:27</time>
<p>now Jen</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:32</time>
<p>normally we would be doing a five-star</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:35</time>
<p>question or review of the week but we've</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:37</time>
<p>taken a little bit of time off from the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:38</time>
<p>holidays and we're getting back into it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:40</time>
<p>so I want to give a quick shout out to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:42</time>
<p>one of our podcast listeners and he shot</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:44</time>
<p>us an email said hey when are the when's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:46</time>
<p>the podcast coming back out so thank you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:47</time>
<p>to Doug mcliberty yes thank you and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:50</time>
<p>we're hoping we can sync up with him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:51</time>
<p>sometime in the future so quick shout</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:53</time>
<p>out and thank you to Doug</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:54</time>
<p>now we left off with what I'm going to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:57</time>
<p>call Arlington part one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:59</time>
<p>and we are moving on to Arlington part</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:01</time>
<p>two</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:01</time>
<p>[Music]</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:05</time>
<p>and we left it with some follow-up yes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:09</time>
<p>so you and I bantered about the tomb and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:12</time>
<p>the unknown and the guard yes and I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:14</time>
<p>believe that I said I thought the guard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:16</time>
<p>changed every hour and you were saying</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:19</time>
<p>every 20 minutes and we discovered it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:21</time>
<p>was actually we were both right yes so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:23</time>
<p>we discovered that actually in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:25</time>
<p>summer</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:27</time>
<p>um from April 1st to September 30th they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:30</time>
<p>actually do change every 30 minutes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:33</time>
<p>and then in the winter October 1st to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:35</time>
<p>March 31st they change every hour and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:38</time>
<p>that's during regular working hours</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:41</time>
<p>after Arlington closes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:43</time>
<p>at 7 pm in the summer months and 5 p.m</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:46</time>
<p>in the winter months they actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:48</time>
<p>change every two hours</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:50</time>
<p>so it is it is man 24 hours and it has</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:54</time>
<p>been manned for 24 hours since 1937.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:58</time>
<p>I actually looked that up uh it they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:00</time>
<p>started guarding the Tomb in 1926</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:04</time>
<p>so about 11 years later they started</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:06</time>
<p>with 24 hours</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:08</time>
<p>um guarding but we do the the 21 seconds</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:11</time>
<p>is still 21 steps 21 seconds that all is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:14</time>
<p>still the same um and because it's the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:16</time>
<p>highest honor in the military the 21 gun</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:17</time>
<p>salute right and I think that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:19</time>
<p>something that Doug had actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:21</time>
<p>mentioned us in his email too so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:24</time>
<p>um again we mentioned it briefly we'll</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:27</time>
<p>cover it a little bit more right this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:29</time>
<p>was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:31</time>
<p>like a memorial to everybody who never</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:33</time>
<p>made it home yes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:35</time>
<p>um so we just wanted to kind of finish</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:36</time>
<p>up with a follow-up and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:38</time>
<p>there are a couple things that I saw as</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:40</time>
<p>well the weapon will always be facing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:42</time>
<p>the crowd</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:44</time>
<p>and they do that to signify it's guarded</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:47</time>
<p>oh interesting and it's only unknown</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:50</time>
<p>soldiers from World War One World War II</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:53</time>
<p>and Korea</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:55</time>
<p>they had an unknown soldier from Vietnam</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:57</time>
<p>but they were actually able to identify</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:59</time>
<p>him oh interesting and his family wanted</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:01</time>
<p>him to come home oh I had no idea oh wow</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:04</time>
<p>so just those conflicts what were One</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:06</time>
<p>World War II in Korea oh how interesting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:07</time>
<p>well</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:09</time>
<p>um so Jen you know now that we've kind</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:11</time>
<p>of kind of uh done that follow-up</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:18</time>
<p>once you tell us who we're going to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:21</time>
<p>start off talking about today well I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:23</time>
<p>really wanted to talk about Medgar Evers</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:24</time>
<p>he's somebody who was very influential</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:27</time>
<p>to me</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:29</time>
<p>and I was very honored to visit him in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:33</time>
<p>Arlington he is part of the tour so when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:36</time>
<p>you take the tram tour they will</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:38</time>
<p>point out Medgar Evers grave</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:41</time>
<p>and it is right off the main path so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:44</time>
<p>it's easy to find he does have a lot of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:46</time>
<p>stones or people have left some kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:49</time>
<p>memorial marker that they visited yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:52</time>
<p>so who is remind me who makers so Medgar</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:56</time>
<p>Evers was just so influential in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:57</time>
<p>NAACP that's right it was so we do a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:02</time>
<p>very good three-part series on Emmett</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:04</time>
<p>Till and Medgar Evers was so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:06</time>
<p>instrumental in getting some of those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:09</time>
<p>Witnesses during the Emmett Till trial</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:12</time>
<p>that's right he came in with the NAACP</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:14</time>
<p>and they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:15</time>
<p>went out into the fields and they just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:18</time>
<p>like sharecroppers and started to ask</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:20</time>
<p>questions and they were able to get</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:22</time>
<p>witnesses to come forward and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:25</time>
<p>basically tell the truth of what</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:27</time>
<p>happened that night and without their</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:29</time>
<p>work a lot of that story never would</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:31</time>
<p>have been uncovered so Medgar Evers</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:35</time>
<p>he was in World War II he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:38</time>
<p>does not graduate from high school he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:40</time>
<p>joins the war before he graduates oh wow</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:42</time>
<p>and he's actually in Normandy uh until</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:45</time>
<p>June of 1944 he comes home finishes high</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:49</time>
<p>school goes to college and then he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:52</time>
<p>starts the NAACP chapters in 1954 right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:55</time>
<p>after Brown versus the Board of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:57</time>
<p>Education which is the desegregation of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:59</time>
<p>schools right and so he's very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:01</time>
<p>instrumental in in fighting for that he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:04</time>
<p>starts boycotting restrooms in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:07</time>
<p>Mississippi that have segregated</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:09</time>
<p>restrooms they boycott and they don't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:11</time>
<p>boycott the restrooms they boycott the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:12</time>
<p>gas stations or any place of business</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:15</time>
<p>that has segregated restrooms he starts</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:17</time>
<p>to really fight for that unfortunately</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:20</time>
<p>he is murdered in his driveway while his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:23</time>
<p>children are home June 12 1963 and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:27</time>
<p>he gets full military honors he's buried</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:30</time>
<p>in Arlington his wife is still alive he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:32</time>
<p>actually has a Navy ship named after him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:34</time>
<p>I think I knew that they finally did</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:37</time>
<p>convict his murderer in 1994.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:40</time>
<p>but he's just somebody he just did a lot</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:42</time>
<p>of anti-lynching work especially with</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:44</time>
<p>Emmett Till and because that's the work</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:46</time>
<p>that I did with my Master's Degree I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:49</time>
<p>just really always looked up to Medgar</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:50</time>
<p>Evers and he lived in Jackson</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:53</time>
<p>Mississippi</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:54</time>
<p>so to be able to visit his grave in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:57</time>
<p>Arlington was just an honor for me yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:59</time>
<p>now was his one of the ones that was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:01</time>
<p>right next to someone else</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:02</time>
<p>[Music]</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:06</time>
<p>no he's kind of off to the right when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:09</time>
<p>you first get there and you first drive</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:11</time>
<p>he's off to the right kind of by Taft I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:14</time>
<p>would say but in the President Taft area</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:17</time>
<p>yes okay it's Taft is still across the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:19</time>
<p>main road</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:20</time>
<p>Medgar Evers is right off like you could</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:23</time>
<p>probably not even get off the tram you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:24</time>
<p>could probably see it from the tram okay</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:27</time>
<p>and then uh so we did do a quick drive</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:30</time>
<p>by of President Taft's we did so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:33</time>
<p>President Taft is the first president to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:35</time>
<p>be buried in Arlington he's the 27th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:37</time>
<p>president I didn't realize he was the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:39</time>
<p>very first very first because there's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:40</time>
<p>only two presidents in Arlington Taft</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:42</time>
<p>and Trinity yeah and so Taft is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:45</time>
<p>in section 30 and he his wife is there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:49</time>
<p>too so Taft's wife is is instrumental in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:52</time>
<p>getting the cherry blossoms that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:53</time>
<p>capacity she's the one who helps plant</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:56</time>
<p>the cherry blossoms and not just like in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:57</time>
<p>Arlington but all around Washington DC</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:59</time>
<p>yes with the Japanese Ambassador yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:02</time>
<p>they do it together yeah and and for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:04</time>
<p>folks if you've never been to Washington</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:05</time>
<p>DC which uh there I I would I will posit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:10</time>
<p>that a lot of people have been if you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:12</time>
<p>listening to this it's highly likely</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:13</time>
<p>that you have been but if you've never</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:15</time>
<p>been that's a great time of year to try</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:17</time>
<p>and go</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:18</time>
<p>um I was lucky enough to go to school in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:20</time>
<p>the in the greater DC area</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:21</time>
<p>um not too far away anyways and uh</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:25</time>
<p>the the cherry blossoms and actually our</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:27</time>
<p>when we were out there it was cherry</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:29</time>
<p>blossom season because we we did yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:33</time>
<p>you can see this cherry blossoms yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:34</time>
<p>there's cherry blossoms at Arlington and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:36</time>
<p>we also did like the Washington mall and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:39</time>
<p>all that stuff yeah the blossoms yes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:41</time>
<p>yeah so that the cherry blossoms was was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:43</time>
<p>pretty cool what's neat is Taft has a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:46</time>
<p>very unique memorial marker and his was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:51</time>
<p>made by a man named Frasier and Frasier</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:54</time>
<p>is a pretty famous DC sculptor he's also</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:58</time>
<p>he did Robert Todd Lincoln's sarcophagus</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:02</time>
<p>he does the sculptor of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:06</time>
<p>Benjamin Franklin at the Franklin</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:07</time>
<p>Institute is done by Frasier the the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:10</time>
<p>picture the statue of Theodore Roosevelt</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:13</time>
<p>on the horse in front of the American</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:15</time>
<p>History Museum that was just removed</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:16</time>
<p>that was done by Frasier he did the two</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:19</time>
<p>justices in front of the Supreme Court</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:21</time>
<p>that was made by Frasier the Alexander</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:24</time>
<p>Hamilton in front of the treasury so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:25</time>
<p>he's wow so he's he's done quite a bit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:27</time>
<p>he's pretty famous sculptor of DC so he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:30</time>
<p>has Taft and he has done Robert Todd</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:33</time>
<p>Lincoln both in Arlington</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:34</time>
<p>[Music]</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:38</time>
<p>yeah so now Robert Todd Lincoln yes that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:42</time>
<p>that one was an interesting one because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:43</time>
<p>to kind of set the stage here</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:46</time>
<p>right we had we had already done like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:48</time>
<p>the Washington Mall tour so obviously</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:50</time>
<p>the Lincoln Memorial is a big thing and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:52</time>
<p>we had done we had recorded already</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:55</time>
<p>recorded the Lincoln assassination video</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:59</time>
<p>um we hadn't published it yet</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:01</time>
<p>um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:03</time>
<p>but when we when you started telling me</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:05</time>
<p>about Robert Todd Lincoln</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:07</time>
<p>talk about someone who has was around</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:11</time>
<p>like physically in locations for key</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:15</time>
<p>points throughout American history so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:16</time>
<p>tell us a little bit about Robert I like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:18</time>
<p>it uh Robert Todd Lincoln is the oldest</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:20</time>
<p>son of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:22</time>
<p>Lincoln and actually it's the only son</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:24</time>
<p>who survives because all three of their</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:27</time>
<p>their children will meet an early end at</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:30</time>
<p>different times one dies before he's in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:32</time>
<p>office one dies after he's during office</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:35</time>
<p>one dies after office so did you talk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:38</time>
<p>about Abraham Abraham Lincoln yeah so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:40</time>
<p>Robert Todd</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:42</time>
<p>he's just I think I learned more about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:44</time>
<p>him being in locations after I worked at</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:47</time>
<p>the James Garfield house because I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:49</time>
<p>worked at the James Garfield house in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:50</time>
<p>Ohio James Garfield was the 20th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:52</time>
<p>president but also the second president</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:56</time>
<p>to be assassinated and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:00</time>
<p>there's also there's four presidents</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:02</time>
<p>who've been assassinated Abraham Lincoln</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:05</time>
<p>James Garfield</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:07</time>
<p>President William McKinley and John F</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:09</time>
<p>Kennedy</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:10</time>
<p>and Robert Todd Lincoln</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:13</time>
<p>with has a presence in the first three</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:16</time>
<p>yeah and literally physically either</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:19</time>
<p>where it happens when it happened or</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:22</time>
<p>obviously there was his father and he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:23</time>
<p>was at his father's side so when his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:25</time>
<p>father is shot he's actually home at the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:27</time>
<p>white house because he had just traveled</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:29</time>
<p>back from Appomattox he was at the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:31</time>
<p>surrender of the Civil War and Lincoln</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:34</time>
<p>has killed just within days of that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:36</time>
<p>surrender and Robert Todd had just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:38</time>
<p>traveled home on a wagon he was tired</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:40</time>
<p>his parents went to the theater his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:41</time>
<p>brother goes to the theater he stays</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:43</time>
<p>home and when he hears that his father's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:45</time>
<p>been shot he makes sure his brother gets</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:48</time>
<p>home and then he goes to the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:51</time>
<p>The Boarding House the Peterson boarding</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:53</time>
<p>house and he's with his father when he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:55</time>
<p>passes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:56</time>
<p>then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:58</time>
<p>when James Garfield is President James</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:00</time>
<p>Garfield makes him his Secretary of War</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:03</time>
<p>and he's with him James Garfield is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:07</time>
<p>going to the train station to convalesce</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:09</time>
<p>with his wife who is recovering from</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:10</time>
<p>sickness and where was he again do you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:13</time>
<p>see okay it's in Washington DC so it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:15</time>
<p>at the train station in DC it's now</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:16</time>
<p>where the I think it's the National</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:19</time>
<p>Portrait Gallery is there now that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:21</time>
<p>right where the marker is and there's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:22</time>
<p>only two little markers on the mall that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:24</time>
<p>kind of tell you that Garfield was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:26</time>
<p>assassinated here there's no Mark yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:29</time>
<p>what actually happened would be on the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:32</time>
<p>road and so they they think it'd be</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:34</time>
<p>dangerous for tourists to know exactly</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:36</time>
<p>where it would be because they would run</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:37</time>
<p>out into the road but in our Garfield</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:39</time>
<p>video we cut to that yeah so we talk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:41</time>
<p>about that a little bit because there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:43</time>
<p>are people who are upset that Garfield</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:44</time>
<p>has no recognition of that but Robert</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:48</time>
<p>Todd Lincoln was with him at the train</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:49</time>
<p>station he was taking him on the train</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:52</time>
<p>like and someone jumped out and Yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:54</time>
<p>Charles Godot shoots him and Robert Todd</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:59</time>
<p>Lincoln I think he's instrumental in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:00</time>
<p>getting the gun away and I think he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:02</time>
<p>testifies as well in gudo's trial but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:05</time>
<p>he's there so that's number two that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:07</time>
<p>number two and then McKinley which who's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:10</time>
<p>in Buffalo New York for the Pan American</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:14</time>
<p>Exposition he's greeting people in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:18</time>
<p>Hall of music and he's standing outside</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:21</time>
<p>the door he's there with him and he's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:23</time>
<p>standing outside the door when he's shot</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:25</time>
<p>by shalgas and so Robert Lincoln just I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:30</time>
<p>think we we kind of make fun of it but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:33</time>
<p>he also refuses any formal invitation</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:36</time>
<p>after the future yeah in the future he's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:38</time>
<p>basically like listen guys you don't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:41</time>
<p>want me around presidents because for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:44</time>
<p>some reason they tend to get shy</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:46</time>
<p>he is seeing he does do he does come to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:50</time>
<p>another public event when the Lincoln</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:52</time>
<p>Memorial is dedicated and actually it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:55</time>
<p>Taft who dedicates it oh wow yeah that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:57</time>
<p>right and he does he does</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:00</time>
<p>um he is present for that so he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:02</time>
<p>yeah it comes out of hiding he risks it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:04</time>
<p>sure and everything seems goes okay but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:07</time>
<p>he's buried in Arlington with his wife</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:09</time>
<p>and his son his son dies young as well</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:11</time>
<p>and they're in a sarcophagus all</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:12</time>
<p>together it's kind of that's another one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:16</time>
<p>that's kind of a path off to the side</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:17</time>
<p>that's where I'm breathing heavy because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:19</time>
<p>it's hard to find it's off to the side</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:21</time>
<p>and it's kind of guarded with a lot of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:22</time>
<p>trees and shrouds so you have to really</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:24</time>
<p>know where it is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:26</time>
<p>and uh but it's it's it's beautiful the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:30</time>
<p>sarcophagus is beautiful and it has his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:31</time>
<p>name on one side and his wife and son</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:33</time>
<p>yeah and learning the history around him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:35</time>
<p>was was super super interesting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:37</time>
<p>especially him being present for 75</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:39</time>
<p>percent of the in assassinations of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:42</time>
<p>presidential assassinations in our</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:44</time>
<p>history we also talk about that when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:46</time>
<p>Arlington has actually paid for in full</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:49</time>
<p>and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:51</time>
<p>America has given the money to the Lee</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:54</time>
<p>family to actually own it outright it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:57</time>
<p>Robert Todd Lincoln that gets the actual</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:59</time>
<p>Deed from them because at the time he's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:02</time>
<p>again the Secretary of War so he gets</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:04</time>
<p>that deed so it's very interesting that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:06</time>
<p>he receives that deed for the cemetery</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:09</time>
<p>that basically starts because of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:11</time>
<p>Civil War that his father was President</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:13</time>
<p>yeah I mean he had he had some pretty</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:15</time>
<p>key roles he was he's a larger character</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:19</time>
<p>in history in our history than I think a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:21</time>
<p>lot of people realize yes and he's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:23</time>
<p>depicted as a Joseph Gordon-Levitt oh</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:27</time>
<p>that's right Lincoln yeah yeah and you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:28</time>
<p>love you love Joseph Gordon I do I think</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:30</time>
<p>he's a great actor and I think he does a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:32</time>
<p>very good job of playing him and showing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:34</time>
<p>that kind of conflict where he wants to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:38</time>
<p>fights he wants to join the war he wants</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:40</time>
<p>to be a help to his father but his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:43</time>
<p>father you know they've lost children</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:45</time>
<p>his mother is very frail mentally and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:49</time>
<p>Lincoln wants to also keep him safe and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:52</time>
<p>protect him as well so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:54</time>
<p>there's kind of that conflict that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:57</time>
<p>going on in Robert Todd's life</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:58</time>
<p>especially taking care of his mother he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:00</time>
<p>will take care of his mother until she</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:01</time>
<p>dies so but if you ever see Lincoln I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:04</time>
<p>think it's a great depiction of the 16th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:07</time>
<p>president yeah yeah that's a good one so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:09</time>
<p>who's uh who who are we visiting after</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:13</time>
<p>that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:14</time>
<p>[Music]</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:18</time>
<p>so I definitely wanted to we'd go to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:21</time>
<p>Glenn Miller's grave that was a cool one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:23</time>
<p>so I am a huge Glenn Miller fan I used</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:26</time>
<p>to listen to his music in college while</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:28</time>
<p>I would study and it was just an honor</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:31</time>
<p>to visit his grave now he has a memorial</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:33</time>
<p>he doesn't actually have a grave there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:36</time>
<p>are a couple memorials since his body</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:38</time>
<p>was never recovered his body was never</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:40</time>
<p>recovered and they don't actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:43</time>
<p>they they don't actually know quite what</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:45</time>
<p>happened wasn't he like traveling by air</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:49</time>
<p>and lost over they lost contact with</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:53</time>
<p>their plane so more most more than</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:55</time>
<p>likely most likely it crashed in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:57</time>
<p>water yeah and you I think you do a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:58</time>
<p>pretty good job about talking in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:59</time>
<p>video of like hey you know he was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:01</time>
<p>traveling around Europe yes he did 35</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:04</time>
<p>bases in one month so Glenn Miller goes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:06</time>
<p>into the military as a musician because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:09</time>
<p>he's too old to fight he's 40. and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:13</time>
<p>they come in for morale play for the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:16</time>
<p>troops in World War II more than happy</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:18</time>
<p>to do that yes World War II and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:21</time>
<p>he loves that so he's going around and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
<p>Glenn Miller at the time you have to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:25</time>
<p>realize he was like a best-selling</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:27</time>
<p>recording artist from 1939 to 1942. in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:32</time>
<p>four years he had 16 number one hits</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:34</time>
<p>holy cow so if you think in the mood</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:37</time>
<p>Moonlight Serenade yeah well and there's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:39</time>
<p>it's funny you mentioned Glenn Miller</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:41</time>
<p>because even for me I don't know if I've</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:43</time>
<p>ever mentioned this to you before for me</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:45</time>
<p>when my youngest Years A lot of people</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:47</time>
<p>who know me personally I was a gymnast</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:49</time>
<p>all growing up and actually in my very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:51</time>
<p>first gymnastics center in central</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:53</time>
<p>California we would go around and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
<p>perform for schools and that was one of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:58</time>
<p>the songs was a Glenn Miller song oh</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:00</time>
<p>really it was a it was very like big</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:02</time>
<p>band right you know very big band type</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:04</time>
<p>style and there's a bunch of you know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:06</time>
<p>kids doing gymnastics and stuff like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:08</time>
<p>that so so we would do something like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:09</time>
<p>that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:10</time>
<p>um and also one of the things I think</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:13</time>
<p>that attached you to Glenn Miller if I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:15</time>
<p>remember right was Jimmy Stewart yes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:16</time>
<p>played him in a movie it's fantastic if</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:19</time>
<p>you've never seen The Glenn Miller Story</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:20</time>
<p>1950 three Jimmy Stewart plays him and I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:24</time>
<p>think Jimmy Stewart even learned how to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:25</time>
<p>play some instruments to play him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:27</time>
<p>because Glenn Glenn Miller played a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:29</time>
<p>couple different instruments including</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:30</time>
<p>the trombone and the piano and I just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:33</time>
<p>think he looks like him he kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:35</time>
<p>embodies the character very well and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:38</time>
<p>it's just a great story great depiction</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:40</time>
<p>when we go to the when we went to the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:41</time>
<p>Jimmy Stewart Museum they had his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:43</time>
<p>costume yeah that's right from that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:45</time>
<p>movie so if you get a chance to check</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:47</time>
<p>that out that was really neat but yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:49</time>
<p>it was a foggy day December 15 1944 he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:54</time>
<p>was this kind of came out later but he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:56</time>
<p>was trying to rush to get to a party for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:58</time>
<p>Eisenhower because Eisenhower just was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:00</time>
<p>getting promoted and it was cold and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:04</time>
<p>they think that they froze the fuel</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:07</time>
<p>intakes and they think they crashed in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:09</time>
<p>the English Channel yeah so another</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:12</time>
<p>interesting thing that unless you're you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:14</time>
<p>have been in the Navy you may not know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:16</time>
<p>this but even today to come into the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:19</time>
<p>Navy as a musician isn't incredibly</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:22</time>
<p>Difficult by today's standards you have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:26</time>
<p>to unless you're a singer and you're an</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:28</time>
<p>out of this world singer which we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:30</time>
<p>actually know some yes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:32</time>
<p>um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:32</time>
<p>you actually have to be able to play</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:35</time>
<p>like two or three instruments oftentimes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:38</time>
<p>you need to be able to read music I mean</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:40</time>
<p>you can't be just a high school hobbyist</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:43</time>
<p>and come into the Navy as a musician so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:46</time>
<p>I think it's kind of neat to hear that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:49</time>
<p>you know I don't I'm pretty sure he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:51</time>
<p>probably didn't come into the Navy as a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:52</time>
<p>musician but he came into the service as</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:54</time>
<p>a musician because all the services that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:57</time>
<p>you know they're musicians and the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:59</time>
<p>musicians across all services are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:01</time>
<p>incredibly talented so it was cool to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:03</time>
<p>see that the Glenn Miller one yeah and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:05</time>
<p>this music still stands to test the time</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:07</time>
<p>and so I I listened to him in college I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
<p>loved his CD at the time</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:12</time>
<p>but um another one that's close is Joe</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:17</time>
<p>Lewis</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:17</time>
<p>[Music]</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:22</time>
<p>so we had talked a little bit about Lee</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:23</time>
<p>Marvin in the first podcast about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:25</time>
<p>Arlington and right beside Lee Marvin is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:28</time>
<p>Joe Lewis and you won't miss that marker</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:31</time>
<p>I mean it's right next to it and it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:33</time>
<p>big and it's pink and it has a depiction</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:36</time>
<p>of him and bronze in his boxing with his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:39</time>
<p>fists up and and it says Joe Lewis on it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:42</time>
<p>so you won't miss it it's actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:44</time>
<p>easier to spot the Joe Lewis one than</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:45</time>
<p>the Lee Marvin one so if you go looking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:48</time>
<p>for either of those look for the Joe</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:49</time>
<p>Lewis one and leave Marvin is is next to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:52</time>
<p>that and it's right by the Tomb of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:53</time>
<p>Unknown and I think it's also pointed</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:55</time>
<p>out on the tram but Joe Lewis uh was a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:58</time>
<p>heavyweight champion of the world 1937</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:01</time>
<p>to 1949 and we we kind of joke about him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:06</time>
<p>because of coming to America yes I put a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:08</time>
<p>clip in there because that was my first</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:11</time>
<p>uh introduction to Joe Lewis was coming</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:15</time>
<p>to America and they're talking about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:16</time>
<p>boxers yeah the Eddie Murphy movie if</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:18</time>
<p>nobody's ever seen it go look it up it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:20</time>
<p>absolutely they're arguing boxes in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:23</time>
<p>barbershop just like old men they're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:26</time>
<p>depicting old men like what would old</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:27</time>
<p>men argue about they're arguing about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:28</time>
<p>who is the best boxer of all time right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:30</time>
<p>right and of course none of these men</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:32</time>
<p>some of these men have faced each other</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:34</time>
<p>but none of them have all faced each</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:36</time>
<p>other so in time who was the best and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:38</time>
<p>Joe Lewis comes up and so his grave is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:41</time>
<p>in Arlington because he was in the army</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:43</time>
<p>during World War II he served from 1942</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:45</time>
<p>to 1945.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:47</time>
<p>he had 25 title fights and like I said</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:51</time>
<p>he was the heavyweight champion of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:52</time>
<p>world</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:53</time>
<p>he retires and then tries to make a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:56</time>
<p>comeback but he's not successful he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:58</time>
<p>retires at 51 and then you know just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:00</time>
<p>trying to make a comeback after 51. he's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:02</time>
<p>understandably not successful but yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:04</time>
<p>he's buried in Arlington he was from</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:07</time>
<p>Alabama</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:08</time>
<p>yeah I mean and part of the cool thing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:10</time>
<p>for me is someone who doesn't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:13</time>
<p>follow a lot of this stuff is is when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:14</time>
<p>I'm researching</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:16</time>
<p>folks like Joe Lewis or Glenn Miller and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:19</time>
<p>I'm seeing kind of their their resume</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:21</time>
<p>right their life in a snapshot I mean</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:24</time>
<p>guys like Joe Lewis I mean absolutely</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:26</time>
<p>incredible absolutely and just tough</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:29</time>
<p>yeah just one of those people who just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:33</time>
<p>all around is an overachiever if you can</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:36</time>
<p>imagine it's like a really tough person</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:38</time>
<p>but he has</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:39</time>
<p>we had talked about not all markers in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:42</time>
<p>Arlington are the same and it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:45</time>
<p>interesting that how different some are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:48</time>
<p>and his is one that is it's it's a pink</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:50</time>
<p>marble so it is it's just yeah it stands</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:52</time>
<p>very different yeah no it definitely</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:53</time>
<p>stands out but when you talk about the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:55</time>
<p>differences you know we talk about the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:57</time>
<p>two presidents that are there and of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:00</time>
<p>course Kennedy's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:06</time>
<p>Kennedy's is a big one right the Eternal</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:08</time>
<p>Flame this is the most visited grave in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:11</time>
<p>Arlington and he had visited Arlington a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:15</time>
<p>couple months before he died and because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:17</time>
<p>you yeah that's right you told me he had</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:19</time>
<p>he didn't want to be buried there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:20</time>
<p>initially well he he just never thought</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:21</time>
<p>about it he was visiting I mean he was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:23</time>
<p>young so he's not thinking about his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:25</time>
<p>mortality and he said this I could see</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:28</time>
<p>myself spending eternity here he says</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:31</time>
<p>that that's crazy so then when he is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:33</time>
<p>assassinated his his wife wants him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:36</time>
<p>buried at Arlington and she wants</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:38</time>
<p>something unique and she had remembered</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:40</time>
<p>a flame an eternal flame in Greece on</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:44</time>
<p>one of their visits so she had thought</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:46</time>
<p>this would be a great way to honor him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:49</time>
<p>to give him an eternal flame so Robert I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:52</time>
<p>John F Kennedy has an eternal flame</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:54</time>
<p>right by his grave and he's been moved a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:57</time>
<p>couple times because as family have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:59</time>
<p>passed they have kind of moved his grave</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:02</time>
<p>and there are pictures Robert</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:04</time>
<p>um Robert was Gerald Kennedy yeah I I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:08</time>
<p>honestly it's hard for me to keep track</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:10</time>
<p>of okay I think it's Robert Fitzgerald</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:11</time>
<p>Kennedy he would be there when they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:14</time>
<p>would move his grave at night oh okay so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:17</time>
<p>there's pictures you can find of him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:18</time>
<p>standing there when they would move his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:20</time>
<p>brother's grave and then when Robert is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:23</time>
<p>assassinated he's buried there Ted is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:25</time>
<p>there of course Jackie O was there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:29</time>
<p>um his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:30</time>
<p>his children that were that died very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:35</time>
<p>young are there but his son JFK Jr is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:38</time>
<p>actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:38</time>
<p>um he was cremated and bear and spread</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:41</time>
<p>over the ocean okay yeah and the setting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:44</time>
<p>of that one right and again I hadn't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:46</time>
<p>really known much about it other than he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:48</time>
<p>was there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:49</time>
<p>um the setting is just it's beautiful</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:50</time>
<p>it's beautiful it's a beautiful spot to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>

<p>visit it's it's large right it's it's a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:55</time>
<p>it's a large space</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:57</time>
<p>um and especially with when we were</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
