Living in Memphis, Tennessee for 3 years taught us more than we expected about Civil Rights history.
On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr., an American civil rights leader, was assassinated while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The assassination of King was a shock to the nation and led to widespread outrage and protests.
In the days following King's assassination, over 100 cities in the United States experienced riots, looting, and violence. The National Guard was called in to restore order in many of these cities.
King's assassination also led to a renewed sense of urgency in the civil rights movement. Many activists redoubled their efforts to end segregation and discrimination, and King's message of nonviolent resistance continued to inspire and motivate people around the world.

<p>There is a marker where his business, his slave trade, his human</p>

<p>So I sit in the lawn, which is right across from the Lorraine</p>

<p>And we learned this a lot living there is, it's a very racially</p>

<p>At the time it was definitely Jim Crow.</p>

<p>And the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King was staying was a black motel.</p>

<p>So you were separated based on race.</p>

<p>And the Lorraine Motel was actually like in the Green book,</p>

<p>And it was at na, it was the upscale black motel.</p>

<p>So what is happening is in February 1st, 1968.</p>

<p>Two men Ethel Cole and Robert Walker are killed by a garbage</p>

<p>truck and their garbage workers and garbage trucks are segregated.</p>

<p>Even garbage workers are segregated where the white workers would drive the</p>

<p>truck and the black workers had to like, sit in the back where the garbage went.</p>

<p>And ride along.</p>

<p>truck malfunctioned and killed them.</p>
