<p></p>

<time>00:02:27</time>
<p>eyes and and please go leave us a review</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:30</time>
<p>in iTunes uh and tell your friends uh</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:33</time>
<p>and family about the the podcast</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:37</time>
<p>a lot of folks know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:39</time>
<p>that the United States has the nickname</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:41</time>
<p>Uncle Sam</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:42</time>
<p>but a lot of people don't know that the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:44</time>
<p>United States got the nickname Uncle Sam</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:46</time>
<p>because in 1813 there was a meat Packer</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:49</time>
<p>named Samuel Wilson from Troy New York</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:53</time>
<p>Samuel Wilson supplied barrels of beef</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:55</time>
<p>to the United States Army during the War</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:57</time>
<p>of 1812 and he stamped them with U.S for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:00</time>
<p>United States</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:02</time>
<p>and eventually the soldiers began</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:04</time>
<p>referring to the food as Uncle Sam's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:06</time>
<p>after Sam Wilson</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:09</time>
<p>a local newspaper picked up the story</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:10</time>
<p>and Uncle Sam eventually gained</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:13</time>
<p>widespread acceptance as the nickname</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:15</time>
<p>for the U.S federal government</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:17</time>
<p>but where did Uncle Sam's iconic image</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:21</time>
<p>come from</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:23</time>
<p>so Jen we're going to talk about that so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:27</time>
<p>why don't you tell us about our subject</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:28</time>
<p>today so before Ringling Brothers before</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:32</time>
<p>Barnum and Bailey there was Dan Rice and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:36</time>
<p>today we're going to talk about Dan Rice</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:37</time>
<p>he is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:39</time>
<p>the most famous person you've never</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:42</time>
<p>heard of yeah and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:44</time>
<p>he was our</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:46</time>
<p>fifth episode</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:48</time>
<p>of walk with history and so why are we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:52</time>
<p>picking these subjects</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:54</time>
<p>so number one I found that interesting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:58</time>
<p>that we get our depiction of Uncle Sam</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:01</time>
<p>from this circus clown personality named</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:05</time>
<p>Dan Rice</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:07</time>
<p>and that he was he had a winter home</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:12</time>
<p>from</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:13</time>
<p>1953 to 1975 in the town next to us when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:19</time>
<p>we lived oh yeah 1853 so 1853 to 1875 in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:24</time>
<p>the town next to us</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:27</time>
<p>um in Erie PA in Gerard yes so the whole</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:32</time>
<p>premise of walk with history is to have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:34</time>
<p>personal access to the locations so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:38</time>
<p>there's a marker in the town and we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:40</time>
<p>would drive by it and we would read it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:41</time>
<p>and I was like there's more to this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:43</time>
<p>story there's more to this person and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:45</time>
<p>we've heard about Dan Rice days yeah so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:48</time>
<p>the first weekend in August Gerard does</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:51</time>
<p>a three-day weekend of Dan Rice days</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:52</time>
<p>they celebrate him they have a parade</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:54</time>
<p>they have vendors come out and celebrate</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:57</time>
<p>it's like a carnival and they've been</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:59</time>
<p>doing that since 1975 and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:03</time>
<p>um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:04</time>
<p>I just wanted to learn more about this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:06</time>
<p>so the the whole premise of walk with</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:08</time>
<p>history is not just very interesting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:11</time>
<p>topics but access to those very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:14</time>
<p>interesting topics so being able to go</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:16</time>
<p>to those locations yeah we are we are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:18</time>
<p>literally walking in the locations where</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:21</time>
<p>history happened and we're we're looking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:23</time>
<p>at these historical markers and we're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:25</time>
<p>looking at not only the physical impact</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:28</time>
<p>but the the impact that has kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:31</time>
<p>continued to resonate through today so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:33</time>
<p>so talk about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:35</time>
<p>talk about Dan Rice and kind of what he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:37</time>
<p>did back then that was unique that made</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:39</time>
<p>him the most famous person that we have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:41</time>
<p>never heard of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:43</time>
<p>so Dan</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:47</time>
<p>born in Gerard he was born actually in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:49</time>
<p>New York City in 1823 and like I said he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:53</time>
<p>had the winter home for his circus in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:57</time>
<p>Girard from 1852 to 1875 and that was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:00</time>
<p>kind of the height of his popularity and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:04</time>
<p>circuses you know they're traveling</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:07</time>
<p>exhibits they come from the Roman times</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:10</time>
<p>where you would bring</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:13</time>
<p>they used to be stationary were wooden</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:15</time>
<p>buildings where people would come and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:16</time>
<p>visit and see horses and there would be</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:19</time>
<p>like combat and things like that Dan</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:21</time>
<p>Rice was one of the first people he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:23</time>
<p>claims to be one of the first people to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:24</time>
<p>use cannabis tents and move the circus</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:27</time>
<p>around</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:28</time>
<p>so because it used to be in arenas you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:31</time>
<p>could see the circus in big towns with</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:33</time>
<p>big Arenas but once you start to have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:36</time>
<p>access to a tent you can move the circus</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:39</time>
<p>to smaller parts of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:42</time>
<p>the country</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:43</time>
<p>so now you're getting into rural areas</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:47</time>
<p>that don't have access to these big</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:50</time>
<p>buildings but you can have access to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:52</time>
<p>large</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:53</time>
<p>fields and put up the tents and you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:55</time>
<p>bringing all of that culture to the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:58</time>
<p>small town yeah and if I remember right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:01</time>
<p>I mean you kind of drive home the point</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:02</time>
<p>in the video of for a lot of small towns</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:05</time>
<p>throughout America at that time in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:07</time>
<p>late 1800s</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:09</time>
<p>this was really</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:11</time>
<p>the only kind of outside influence in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:14</time>
<p>outside culture outside anything that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:16</time>
<p>they saw yes so this is like you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:19</time>
<p>getting these trains coming in all these</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:21</time>
<p>people menageries of animals and and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:25</time>
<p>performance freak shows for lack of a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:28</time>
<p>better term that's what they call it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:29</time>
<p>Oddities so all of this access to small</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:33</time>
<p>towns that they've never had so this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:34</time>
<p>influence of the circus it's a huge</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:36</time>
<p>influence on America's culture and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:40</time>
<p>the circus clown</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:43</time>
<p>in areas that are too long or too big to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:46</time>
<p>hear speech the circus clown has this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:49</time>
<p>dialogue that is spoken through</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:51</time>
<p>acrobatic skill or big demonstrative</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:56</time>
<p>movements or clothing and things like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:58</time>
<p>that so the circus clown is using this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:01</time>
<p>flamboyant acting to convey emotion and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:06</time>
<p>a story to the people and so that's kind</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:09</time>
<p>of where you're getting this Universal</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:11</time>
<p>communication</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:12</time>
<p>from the circus clown to the people yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:15</time>
<p>and if if we go back to our previous</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:18</time>
<p>episode right talking about Lucille Ball</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:20</time>
<p>and Vaudeville Vaudeville is kind of an</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:23</time>
<p>evolution yes of the circus so think</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:25</time>
<p>about these big performers and that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:27</time>
<p>one of the things I found so interesting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:28</time>
<p>right even back then you didn't have to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:31</time>
<p>speak</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:32</time>
<p>people in living in rural areas didn't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:35</time>
<p>have to be able to read the signs they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:37</time>
<p>didn't have to be able to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:38</time>
<p>know this stuff right it was physical</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:41</time>
<p>comedy it's physical comedy and Dan Rice</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:43</time>
<p>they say is he was the the the birth the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:48</time>
<p>idea of Vaudeville came from him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:50</time>
<p>because he did these</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:53</time>
<p>shows he did a Vaudeville type show</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:55</time>
<p>novelty Acts were part of his circus</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:58</time>
<p>having the quick transition of novelty</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:01</time>
<p>acts and to do something in between</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:03</time>
<p>setting up the larger events he would do</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:07</time>
<p>little acts just like a Vaudeville show</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:09</time>
<p>so he they say he was the father of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:12</time>
<p>Vaudeville and he would he would do it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:15</time>
<p>so he would be wearing a flamboyant</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:16</time>
<p>outfit which was like the Star-Spangled</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:20</time>
<p>coat and the red and white striped pants</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:23</time>
<p>and a big top hat that's red and blue</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:27</time>
<p>and white with a white beard and so this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:30</time>
<p>very patriotic American looking clown is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:36</time>
<p>becoming the most they say if because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:40</time>
<p>this is before radio before TV that he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:43</time>
<p>he was a household name he was a pop</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:45</time>
<p>culture celebrity</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:48</time>
<p>in a time when you didn't have a radio</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:50</time>
<p>and TV yeah if if people think about if</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:53</time>
<p>they can picture some of those old</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:55</time>
<p>Ringling Brothers posters yes right the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:58</time>
<p>things we know today because they kind</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:59</time>
<p>of outlasted</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:01</time>
<p>Dan Rice and his traveling circus a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:04</time>
<p>little bit better right they they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:05</time>
<p>translated further but when in doing the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:09</time>
<p>research as far as making the video for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:11</time>
<p>this I found posters I mean you just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:15</time>
<p>Googled Dan Rice and you'll you'll find</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:17</time>
<p>a hundred different things and it's big</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:20</time>
<p>old posters and newspapers yeah I was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:22</time>
<p>trying to think like what household name</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:24</time>
<p>would you think of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:25</time>
<p>like Johnny Carson maybe to our hour</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:29</time>
<p>parents maybe to us maybe like uh Jimmy</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:32</time>
<p>Fallon like someone who's doing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:34</time>
<p>commentary someone who's doing something</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:36</time>
<p>that he's a household name based on a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:39</time>
<p>show that he's producing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:41</time>
<p>daily or monthly or you know his circus</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:45</time>
<p>is traveling from town to town everyone</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:46</time>
<p>is aware of Dan Rice and so that is who</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:50</time>
<p>he is everyone knows him and for a time</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:53</time>
<p>it's the most famous show I mean he has</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:55</time>
<p>fans</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:56</time>
<p>Mark Twain was a fan Walt Whitman was a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:59</time>
<p>fan so he's very influential I think</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:01</time>
<p>Zachary Taylor is a huge fan the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:04</time>
<p>president is a huge fan so it's um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:08</time>
<p>he does political commentary too yeah so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:10</time>
<p>you mentioned Zachary Taylor the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:12</time>
<p>president so so there's some there's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:14</time>
<p>more that kind of evolved around right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:16</time>
<p>politicians yes right it wasn't just the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:18</time>
<p>president it was congressman and yeah so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:20</time>
<p>he's making fun of both sides he's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:22</time>
<p>making fun of I mean because America you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:24</time>
<p>think in the 1850s there's lots of angst</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:28</time>
<p>going on This Is pre-civil War</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:30</time>
<p>there's a lot of different points of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:32</time>
<p>views and since he's traveling America</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:34</time>
<p>he's inundated with these different</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:37</time>
<p>points of political view so what he does</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:40</time>
<p>is he makes fun of both he kind of gives</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:43</time>
<p>both sides a hard time for their</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:45</time>
<p>Ridiculousness and jokes about them and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:49</time>
<p>I mean Zachary Taylor thinks it's funny</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:51</time>
<p>it's like almost being roasted kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:54</time>
<p>thing he comes up he coins the term get</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:57</time>
<p>on the bandwagon so one of his shows</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:59</time>
<p>would have like a bandwagon jumping</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:01</time>
<p>around for different ideas and you could</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:03</time>
<p>jump on the bandwagon if that was the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:06</time>
<p>idea you supported he also claims to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:09</time>
<p>come up with the greatest show like that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:11</time>
<p>was his coin term</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:15</time>
<p>so here's this man who has this huge</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:19</time>
<p>circus</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:20</time>
<p>and he decides to come to Gerard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:24</time>
<p>to winter so what does that mean that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:25</time>
<p>means in the winter months they would</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:27</time>
<p>come there they'd build these huge barns</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:30</time>
<p>these huge Arenas to practice their acts</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:34</time>
<p>over the winter and let the animals have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:35</time>
<p>a chance to rest</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:37</time>
<p>and just convalesce for their winter</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:39</time>
<p>months with the circus so they're coming</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:41</time>
<p>into this small rural Town Northwestern</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:44</time>
<p>yes to bring this big huge circus that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:48</time>
<p>popular across America</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:51</time>
<p>into the small area so the people</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:54</time>
<p>at first aren't very welcoming</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:56</time>
<p>but he ends up he ends up marrying in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:59</time>
<p>1861 he ends up marrying one of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:03</time>
<p>prominent businessman's daughter he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:05</time>
<p>marries her on her 18th birthday he's 38</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:08</time>
<p>at the time yeah and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:11</time>
<p>they you know they quickly have children</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:13</time>
<p>and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:15</time>
<p>he gets accepted by the town and this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:17</time>
<p>really puts the town on the map but in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:20</time>
<p>our video and you'll see like why does</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:21</time>
<p>he picture yarn right like what's the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:23</time>
<p>whole point and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:25</time>
<p>this is kind of our one of our first</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:27</time>
<p>experiences with going to a graveyard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:29</time>
<p>and using Find A Grave because it was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:33</time>
<p>alegrippa Martin who is an animal</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:35</time>
<p>trainer and he actually is a famous</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:37</time>
<p>animal trainer he trained Hannibal the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:40</time>
<p>elephant so again if you look up</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:42</time>
<p>famous circus acts Hannibal was a famous</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:46</time>
<p>circus yeah and even I right again not a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:49</time>
<p>his not a history buff even I was like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:52</time>
<p>I've heard of that particular elephant</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:56</time>
<p>yes so this is before elephants are I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:58</time>
<p>mean they're being brought over to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:00</time>
<p>America and again they're being shown to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:03</time>
<p>the the country and they're training</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:05</time>
<p>them so Hannibal they would train him to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:09</time>
<p>kind of like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:10</time>
<p>you know stand on one foot and swing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:14</time>
<p>from the tusks and I know it sounds</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:15</time>
<p>crazy but he people would swing from the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:17</time>
<p>tusks and stuff like he would do those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:19</time>
<p>things he was a trained elephant and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:20</time>
<p>Ella gripper Martin was his trainer and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:22</time>
<p>he was from Gerard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:25</time>
<p>and he was friends with Dan Rice he was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:27</time>
<p>part of his circus so when Dan Rice was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:29</time>
<p>looking for an area he suggested his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:32</time>
<p>hometown and that is why he brought it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:35</time>
<p>to Gerard so we find his grave so you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:39</time>
<p>know when you're doing this work most</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:41</time>
<p>cemeteries have an office where you can</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:44</time>
<p>go in and ask where is this grave</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:46</time>
<p>located Girard Cemetery does not</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:49</time>
<p>about what we were able to find was a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:51</time>
<p>picture of the Grave so you and I drove</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:54</time>
<p>around trying to match that picture yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:57</time>
<p>and I believe you said the the website</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:59</time>
<p>that we use and if folks I've never</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:01</time>
<p>heard of it's called find a great yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:02</time>
<p>it's great it's it's a fantastic website</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:05</time>
<p>it works very well but we found it and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:07</time>
<p>we were able to stand this if you watch</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:08</time>
<p>the video we stand there but like I'm</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:11</time>
<p>I'm learning things along the way we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:13</time>
<p>missed like he Dan Rice's widow</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:17</time>
<p>um Charlotte</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:18</time>
<p>his his wife that he marries 18 year old</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:21</time>
<p>that he marries</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:22</time>
<p>um Charlotte McConnell is actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:25</time>
<p>buried there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:26</time>
<p>so we didn't go to her grave they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:27</time>
<p>actually have one of their children is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:28</time>
<p>buried there we didn't go to their grave</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:30</time>
<p>so we there was more things we could</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:32</time>
<p>have seen there that we didn't go to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:34</time>
<p>um they actually they actually get</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:35</time>
<p>divorced in 1881 so they're only married</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:37</time>
<p>for 20 years</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:38</time>
<p>but and I don't think she ever remarries</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:40</time>
<p>and she stays there in Gerard yeah and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:43</time>
<p>and one of the interesting things about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:45</time>
<p>these videos</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:46</time>
<p>especially when we're when you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:48</time>
<p>filming at a location where it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:51</time>
<p>relatively Rural right we lived in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:53</time>
<p>Erie area for a couple years</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:55</time>
<p>and learning stuff from the locals so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:57</time>
<p>I'll tell you one thing that I learned</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:59</time>
<p>while while making this video so I and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:01</time>
<p>it was actually after the after we made</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:03</time>
<p>it or maybe just before and I remember</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:05</time>
<p>being at work and talking to now retired</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:09</time>
<p>Navy chief angelikowski</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:12</time>
<p>and I remember saying hey yeah we were</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:14</time>
<p>just down in Gerard and we were filming</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:15</time>
<p>this thing and I ended up talking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:17</time>
<p>somehow this Dan Rice came up and the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:19</time>
<p>monument there's a monument in Gerard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:21</time>
<p>yes there's like a kind of a pedestal</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
<p>it's a civil war Monument Civil War</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:26</time>
<p>Monument right so I start talking about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:28</time>
<p>the monument and he just looks at me</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:29</time>
<p>he's like and I see this the look on his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:32</time>
<p>face and he's looking at me like I know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:33</time>
<p>more than this about you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:35</time>
<p>and all of a sudden so I stopped talking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:36</time>
<p>and he's like well do you know why the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:38</time>
<p>eagle that's on top of the monument is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:40</time>
<p>facing the direction that it was and I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:41</time>
<p>was like oh I'm about to get a lesson</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:44</time>
<p>and he starts telling me how the eagle</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:46</time>
<p>is facing west because that's where yes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:51</time>
<p>that's where the person who made is from</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:53</time>
<p>Chicago is from Chicago the person who</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
<p>made the monument he starts telling me</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:56</time>
<p>all these facts about Dan Rice yes rice</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:58</time>
<p>days and all this stuff and that's one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:00</time>
<p>of the cool things about doing these</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:02</time>
<p>YouTube</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:03</time>
<p>videos and our history walks is we talk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:06</time>
<p>to people from the area yes and you'd be</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:08</time>
<p>surprised when you do things like this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:10</time>
<p>at how much local people know like oh</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:13</time>
<p>yeah I've been doing Dan Rice days for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:14</time>
<p>like my whole life exactly from Gerard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:16</time>
<p>and they just kind of rattle off all</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:18</time>
<p>these things about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:20</time>
<p>again the most famous person that we've</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:22</time>
<p>never heard of we've never heard of and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:23</time>
<p>so you have the marker there so what</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:25</time>
<p>he's talking about is a civil war in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:27</time>
<p>1863 Dan Rice commissioned a civil war</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:31</time>
<p>Monument to go up in the middle of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:34</time>
<p>Gerard and it's a pillar not an obelisk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:37</time>
<p>and it has an eagle on top and it's he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:39</time>
<p>commissions it by um a sculptor named</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:41</time>
<p>Valk and Valk is kind of famous he did</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:45</time>
<p>Abraham Lincoln's death mask</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:47</time>
<p>that's right so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:49</time>
<p>he's commissioned to do the sculpture</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:51</time>
<p>and he pays all this money for it and he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:53</time>
<p>brings it in huge 10 000 people show up</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:56</time>
<p>and the city again this is two years</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:59</time>
<p>after he has married Charlotte</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:01</time>
<p>people think is he doing this to get in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:03</time>
<p>our good graces because this is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:05</time>
<p>considered the first U.S Civil War</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:09</time>
<p>Monument to be erected in in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:13</time>
<p>the us because it's the very first one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:15</time>
<p>yeah because it's 1863. Civil War isn't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:17</time>
<p>even over yet oh wow so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:21</time>
<p>is he doing it to get in everyone's good</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:23</time>
<p>graces is he doing it because he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:24</time>
<p>actually feels this way no one knows for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:26</time>
<p>sure I kind of talk about that on the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:27</time>
<p>video but he commissions it it comes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:30</time>
<p>into huge Fanfare and it's it's erected</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:33</time>
<p>right in the middle it's still there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:34</time>
<p>today</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:35</time>
<p>and so we show all of it and what's also</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:38</time>
<p>neat</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:39</time>
<p>is the city is proud of Dan Ryan so they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:42</time>
<p>still have the pillars</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:46</time>
<p>markers and they have the two lions that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:48</time>
<p>were in front of his house that are in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:50</time>
<p>front of city hall and then the pillars</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:52</time>
<p>there's four pillars so two of them are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:55</time>
<p>right there by the monument and two are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:57</time>
<p>where we used to take the boys to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:59</time>
<p>baseball remember they had they moved</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:02</time>
<p>the two pillars there too so they they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:04</time>
<p>keep that history in and they eat those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:07</time>
<p>used to Marcus property lines desert</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
<p>Marcus property lines for his house his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:11</time>
<p>huge mansion that he built and then they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:13</time>
<p>also have that big mural and that's kind</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:16</time>
<p>of where we talk in front of in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:17</time>
<p>video and we depict his outfit and how</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:20</time>
<p>that outfit was used as the model</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:23</time>
<p>for Harper's Bazaar when they depicted</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:25</time>
<p>when they drew Uncle Sam they drew Uncle</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:28</time>
<p>Sam off of what Dan Rice wore when he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:32</time>
<p>was the clown in his circus yeah so if</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:34</time>
<p>people get a chance to go watch the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:36</time>
<p>video it's it's very interesting but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:37</time>
<p>this mural we're standing there for a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:39</time>
<p>while so it's not a quick picture you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:40</time>
<p>get to see it for quite a while you'll</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:43</time>
<p>see this character and you think like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:45</time>
<p>that's just a poor copy of Uncle Sam and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:49</time>
<p>it's actually not that's actually the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:51</time>
<p>the depiction of Dan Rice in his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:55</time>
<p>standard what became standard Dan Rice</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:58</time>
<p>circus costume that Harper's Bazaar who</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:02</time>
<p>ended up coming up with that Uncle Sam</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:04</time>
<p>poster the I want you yeah and you see</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:07</time>
<p>that all the time they based it off of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:08</time>
<p>him and that's Uncle Sam I mean that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:10</time>
<p>the representation of the United States</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:12</time>
<p>if you say like this picture oh you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:15</time>
<p>like oh that's Uncle Sam all right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:16</time>
<p>that's yeah I mean school health Rock I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:18</time>
<p>think would use him talking to people as</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:21</time>
<p>America like this is America talking so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:25</time>
<p>yeah that's Dan Rice so he's like again</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:27</time>
<p>the famous person you never heard of and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:29</time>
<p>there's a book</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:31</time>
<p>um that has that same title that goes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:33</time>
<p>all into his life and gives all the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:34</time>
<p>information but um yeah that's why we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:37</time>
<p>picked that video that's why we did it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:38</time>
<p>and I think we did it on a day date so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:40</time>
<p>made it easy for us to film it yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:42</time>
<p>without the kids yeah and it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:45</time>
<p>interesting because we talk about some</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:47</time>
<p>pretty famous comedians have kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:49</time>
<p>mentioned him yeah you know like Jon</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:51</time>
<p>Stewart yes yes like folks like that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:54</time>
<p>right political commentary it is birthed</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:57</time>
<p>you know he we call him we in the video</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:59</time>
<p>we kind of call him the father of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:00</time>
<p>political commentary and back then that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:03</time>
<p>was part of his circus act just making</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:04</time>
<p>fun of the people that everybody know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:06</time>
<p>and back then it was politicians the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:09</time>
<p>president stuff like that yeah and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:11</time>
<p>and his after he divorces Charlotte and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:14</time>
<p>he kind of succumbs to alcoholism his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:17</time>
<p>star falls relatively quickly and then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:20</time>
<p>after the Civil War</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:21</time>
<p>and I talk about this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:23</time>
<p>after radio after the Civil War really</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:25</time>
<p>after World War II circuses basically</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:27</time>
<p>fall because you have TV you have access</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:31</time>
<p>to exotic animals and great shows and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:35</time>
<p>movies and it really it transitioned</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:38</time>
<p>right think think of the transition of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:40</time>
<p>circus to Vaudeville yes to television</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:44</time>
<p>Television right so think about the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:46</time>
<p>podcast that we've done we've done Dan</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:48</time>
<p>Rice circus we've done some Vaudeville</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:51</time>
<p>folks Bob Hope Lucille Ball yes on to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:55</time>
<p>television Jimmy Stewart Jimmy Stewart</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:57</time>
<p>and Lucille Ball and again Bob Hope as</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:59</time>
<p>well so there's that there's an</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:00</time>
<p>interesting transition there there is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:02</time>
<p>that I never</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:04</time>
<p>again I don't think you until you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:06</time>
<p>started learning about Dan Rice was just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:08</time>
<p>like holy cow like this guy</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:10</time>
<p>the the Ripples and in history and time</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:14</time>
<p>that he has left people see them but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:17</time>
<p>they don't know that he was the stone</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:18</time>
<p>that was dropped in the lake</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:20</time>
<p>he did it and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:23</time>
<p>yeah and he he dies pretty penniless and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:27</time>
<p>obscure I think his his grave is in New</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:29</time>
<p>Jersey I think people still leave</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:31</time>
<p>flowers and things but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:33</time>
<p>um he has his last tour in 1885 and then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:36</time>
<p>he dies in 1900 at 77 years old so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:40</time>
<p>most people have forgotten Dan Rice but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:42</time>
<p>his impact is still felt today for sure</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:45</time>
<p>anytime you see political commentary</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:47</time>
<p>that's Dan Rice started all of that and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:51</time>
<p>he it worked it was the people want to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:54</time>
<p>see that the people want to see when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:56</time>
<p>they're being ridiculous in their ideas</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:59</time>
<p>and they I think people still want to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:02</time>
<p>laugh at themselves and he was very good</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:04</time>
<p>at doing that and people today you know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:06</time>
<p>when they're really good at doing that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:07</time>
<p>as well yeah yeah so yeah this was just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:11</time>
<p>such an interesting one to make because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:13</time>
<p>it was a Small Town Pennsylvania but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:16</time>
<p>here's this historical character who</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:18</time>
<p>really when you learn about him and the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:21</time>
<p>effects that he had</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:24</time>
<p>um it's just super interesting so again</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:26</time>
<p>not many people know Dan Rice the circus</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:29</time>
<p>performer but most people do know that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:32</time>
<p>iconic image that inspired the Army</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:34</time>
<p>Recruiting posters with our very own</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:36</time>
<p>Uncle Sam on there pointing at you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:39</time>
<p>with that statement of I want you for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:41</time>
<p>the US Army</p>

<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:43</time>
<p>and while Dan Rice may have passed away</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:45</time>

<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:23:48</time>
<p>Echoes throughout today</p>
