Famous Marines Buried at Arlington | Road Trip to Military History - Talk With History

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:00</time>
November 10th, 1775, Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, which is always a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:07</time>
joke, that of course the Marine Corps would be established in a bar, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:12</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:12</time>
That's classic.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:25</time>
Welcome to Talk With History.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:27</time>
I am your host, Scott, here with my wife and historian, Jen.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:31</time>
On this podcast, we give you insights to our history inspired world travels,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:35</time>
YouTube channel journey, and examine history through deeper conversations

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:39</time>
with the curious, the explorers, and the history lovers out there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:44</time>
Jenn, we're back.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:47</time>
As we record this, this is our first podcast after the Christmas break.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:51</time>
We've taken a bit of a break over the holidays, which we try to do every

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:54</time>
Yes, everyone should know Scott and I are the parents of three children

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:58</time>
who need the magic of Christmas, so

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:00</time>
and we're doing this kind of a third full time job while you're

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:06</time>
writing and I'm working doing active duty Navy stuff and all the fun stuff.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:10</time>
So while we've been on holiday break, I can tell you we have

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:14</time>
still kept ourselves busy.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:17</time>
So as a bit of a teaser to some of our larger efforts that we'll talk

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:20</time>
about in the coming weeks and months we just released a history t shirt.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:25</time>
with a nod to Benjamin Franklin.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:28</time>
So his Join or Die political cartoon is, is famous even today.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:33</time>
Picture the, the kind of snake kind of cut up with the different states

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:37</time>
labels just below it, each section.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:40</time>
So it was published in May of 1754 and it was his call to

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:44</time>
the colonies to stay united.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:46</time>
So we just released our new History or Die t shirt.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:50</time>
So that's History or Die, which is a nod to that call of unification.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:54</time>
We want to bring.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:56</time>
Some creators together to help put out good history quality content We have a

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:03</time>
history dye t shirts live over and walk on the walk with history gift shop right

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:07</time>
now And they're already our most popular t shirt that we've created so you can

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:11</time>
feel free to check it out over at walk with history gift shop dot com that's walk

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:16</time>
with history gift shop com and speaking of those who already bought a shirt

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:20</time>
and donated towards our efforts today We wanted to give a shout out to Nancy

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:24</time>
Arnold Brett Eder and Jennifer Thomas.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:27</time>
They had the amazing presence of mind to grab our new shirt first, but

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:32</time>
they also donated during checkout.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:34</time>
We actually add that as an option because we don't really

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:36</time>
make money off the t shirts.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:37</time>
We might make a dollar or two.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:39</time>
Because I try to keep the prices as low as I possibly can.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:42</time>
So thank you so much guys.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:43</time>
Nancy is actually someone we met through our online community.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:46</time>
Brett is an old family friend and Jen Thomas is a fellow Navy pilot vet that

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:52</time>
flew with my Jen way back in the day.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:55</time>
So thank you all guys so much for, for donating to our efforts.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:59</time>
It really does help because none of the stuff that we are

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:02</time>
doing is necessarily free.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:04</time>
And you guys are kind of.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:05</time>
Helping us move along.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:07</time>
So we really do appreciate the support.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:08</time>
Yes, and if you think of the shirt the political cartoon said join

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:12</time>
or die, originally we replaced join with history and it is really a foundational.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:18</time>
Belief of what we do that to really live a full life and to understand

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:23</time>
where we're going in the future You really have to understand the past

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:26</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:26</time>
And there's a whole lot of thoughts that I have around kind

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:29</time>
of that history or die phrase.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:31</time>
And we'll talk about that a little bit more in the future.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:42</time>
Today we embark on a poignant journey.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:46</time>
Through hallowed grounds that bear witness to the legacy of some of the United

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:50</time>
States Marine Corps most revered heroes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:55</time>
We'll be taking you on a tour through the final resting places of legendary

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:59</time>
astronauts, iconic drill instructors, and symbols of courage and sacrifice

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:05</time>
immortalized at the Iwo Jima Memorial.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:09</time>
As we walk the sacred grounds and stand before these hallowed graves, we'll

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:13</time>
delve into the stories etched in stone.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:15</time>
Stories that transcend time and continue to inspire generations.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:21</time>
Together, let's pay homage to these extraordinary individuals who

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:26</time>
exemplify the Marine Corps values of honor, courage, and commitment.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:30</time>
So, Jen, where were we that we're going to talk about during

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:34</time>
this Talk with History episode?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:38</time>
Honestly in my opinion and yours too babe We were at the only place you

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:42</time>
probably should be on Veterans Day and that was Arlington National Cemetery

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:46</time>
in Washington DC Or in Arlington, Virginia people will correct me.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:50</time>
It's not actually in Washington DC.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:52</time>
It's in Arlington, Virginia right across the Potomac but It was

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:56</time>
just important for us to go there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:58</time>
We brought the kids there and we wanted to honor some Marines buried

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:04</time>
in Arlington for Veterans Day and it's so close to Marine Corps birthday.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:07</time>
It's the day after the Marine Corps birthday.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:10</time>
The Marine Corps birthday is November 10th and so the Marines were actually

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:16</time>
buried at Arlington, were actually celebrated, and they all had Marine

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:20</time>
Corps flags in front of their tombstones.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:23</time>
So, we actually, we drove up.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:24</time>
We live a couple hours away.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:26</time>
Drove up to Arlington on Veterans Day.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:28</time>
We were there on the actual day.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:30</time>
I think it was a Saturday.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:31</time>
And so we got up there and there was actually a little bit more people

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:35</time>
there than than we were normally used to because we've been to

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:37</time>
Arlington a fair amount of times.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:39</time>
And not only for Veterans Day.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:41</time>
And we'll talk a little bit more about kind of the people we saw throughout

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:44</time>
Arlington while we were there, but also that the president was there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:48</time>
Sure.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:48</time>
And we were not aware that President Biden was going to be there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:53</time>
So we were rerouted.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:55</time>
And in that reroute, so we, and we'll talk about this when we first get

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:00</time>
into Arlington, we have been there before, many times, if you know us and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:04</time>
know this channel, and we, The first grave we visited was Gunnery Sgt.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:09</time>
Ermey, who's the actor, and his grave is in one of the newer locations

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:17</time>
way off to the right hand side.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:20</time>
So you really have to go there first or last and it's a long walk to get there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:24</time>
We don't have car access and so We went there first without even thinking so much

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:30</time>
about what was going on and so coming back from his grave We weren't allowed to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:36</time>
Walk by the tomb of the unknown because that's where the ceremony was happening

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:41</time>
So we actually ended up walking behind the tomb of the unknown about around the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:45</time>
back side of Arlington National Cemetery And we came across the Confederate circle

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:50</time>
something we had heard about and read about but never Visited before and it

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:56</time>
I really could tell as we walked upon it that of what it was I was like, oh,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:01</time>
this is the Confederate circle and I thought to myself, I should make a video.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:07</time>
We knew nothing about what was happening with the monument on

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:11</time>
the slate to be removed the end of December 2023 . We had no idea about

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:16</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:17</time>
So, and so to kind of set the stage there, so we had gone over and visited

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:21</time>
Gunny Ermey and because President Biden was doing a presentation in the Tomb of

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:24</time>
the Unknown Soldier, which is kind of in the center of Arlington, if you've

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:27</time>
ever been there, it's kind of at the top of this little hill, hilly area We'd

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:31</time>
gone, gone to see Gunny Ermey, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:33</time>
And if you, if you're not familiar with his name, think of Full Metal Jacket.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:37</time>
And we're going to give him more.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:38</time>
Private Pyle.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:39</time>
He's the voice of kind of the, the army soldiers and toy story, famous actor.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:44</time>
And going over, we went again, we kind of walked around the Tomb of

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:48</time>
the Unknown as we were visiting other Marines that we'll talk about.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:52</time>
And you said, Oh, cool.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:55</time>
Look, here's the, here's Confederate circle.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:57</time>
And just kind of unexpectedly,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:59</time>
So there was a naming commission and Congress created them in 2020 providing

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:03</time>
suggestions, scrubbing Confederate names or other symbols from the U.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:07</time>
S.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:07</time>
military bases, property, things along that nature.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:11</time>
And under the law, the Pentagon is required to implement

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:13</time>
those recommendations.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:15</time>
And so this memorial of in the confederate circle.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:20</time>
So in the confederate circle, just so you know, it's section 16.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:24</time>
So it's a low number.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:25</time>
So think of an original, one of the original sections is 400 confederate

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:30</time>
soldiers buried in a circle.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:32</time>
And this monument is kind of put up in the middle of them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:37</time>
And it was erected in 1914 and funded from the daughters of the confederacy.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:43</time>
And it It promotes the lost cause narrative or at least that's what the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:47</time>
Naming Commission that's what they found that through their research that it

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:52</time>
supported the lost cause narrative and they, they believe it, it's about that,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:59</time>
that romanticization of the Confederacy fighting to uphold Southern values while

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:03</time>
downplaying the horrors of slavery.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:05</time>
And they found that because the The monument features a bronze woman crowned

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:12</time>
with olive leaves, and she's supposed to represent the South, so this, the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:16</time>
strong woman, and then underneath her is 14 shields, one for each of the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:21</time>
14 confederate states, plus Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri, which were border

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:26</time>
states who didn't necessarily secede, so They're pulling in three more states

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:31</time>
who probably don't want to be pulled in.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:33</time>
be pulled

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:34</time>
then below the shields are these 32 lifelike figures of gods, confederate

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:39</time>
soldiers, and in those figures are two enslaved African Americans.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:45</time>
And one portrays kind of like that mammy stereotype.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:50</time>
Think of Gone with the Wind, and she's holding an infant child up to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:54</time>
a white officer to kind of, kiss the officer goodbye as he goes to war.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:59</time>
And then,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:00</time>
goes

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:01</time>
and then the other is a enslaved man like following his owner into battle.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:09</time>
So because of those two depictions of African Americans and not really

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:14</time>
having their agency, it, it was found by this commission that it

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:19</time>
supported that lost cause narrative and

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:22</time>
Yeah, and, and the interesting thing was, again, from kind of,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:26</time>
again, me walking around not, not really knowing much about it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:29</time>
And at the time you didn't really either.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:31</time>
Mm-Hmm.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:32</time>
It is not a monument that's like in your face.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:34</time>
It's not in the center of anything.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:36</time>
It's close to, to Arlington house, which is the, the center.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:40</time>
Because you, like you said, it's one of the older plots.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:43</time>
Correct.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:43</time>
But it's, it's not like overly advertised.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:46</time>
It's, it's just kind of any other memorial that's around

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:48</time>
and it's kind of trees around it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:49</time>
So you kind of have to walk.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:51</time>
to it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:52</time>
So the memorial they believed offered this nostalgic mytholized

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:59</time>
version of the confederacy.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:01</time>
This is this is what the commission wrote in their report.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:03</time>
Mythologicalized vision of the confederacy, including highly

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:09</time>
sanitized depictions of slavery.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:11</time>
And then sometimes the commission will consider alternatives to removing and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:17</time>
They'll add some signage for context or something like that, but ultimately

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:21</time>
they decided that contextualization was not an appropriate option in this case.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:28</time>
So they said they will be removing only the bronze elements and the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:33</time>
granite base will remain and they won't disturb any of the 400 graves.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:36</time>
So if you see our video, It is on this bronze, this, this bronze statue

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:41</time>
is on a granite base and they're only taking the bronze statue.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:45</time>
Now what's interesting about this bronze statue is it was sculpted by a student

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:49</time>
from VMI and that student from VMI is buried in that Confederate circle

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:55</time>
from, and so he's buried at Arlington.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:58</time>
He sculpted this.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:59</time>
He went to VMI and VMI has.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:04</time>
asked for the statue.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:06</time>
And

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:06</time>
And is that, that that's where

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:08</time>
that's what they're taking it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:09</time>
The governor of Virginia had just came in and said if you're going

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:12</time>
to take down the statue, we would like to take it to private land.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:16</time>
And since the student at VMI sculpted it, VMI would like to have it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:19</time>
VMI is going to put it in a But I think in their cemetery there, but it's being taken

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:25</time>
away from the person who actually sculpted it who's in Arlington But so that's what's

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:31</time>
happening right now We did not we're not aware of that when we made the video if

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:34</time>
you want to see the video on instagram It's just me Showing you the statue.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:39</time>
It's

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:39</time>
and, and the funny part was is you can kind of behind the scenes here

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:43</time>
a little bit, you were going through kind of some of these Instagram real

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:46</time>
videos that you had made because we're pretty active on Instagram.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:50</time>
And you said, ah, this video isn't really that good.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:52</time>
You know, talking about it because you hadn't really told

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:55</time>
any story or drawn any point.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:57</time>
You had literally just pointed out the, the statue and, and here's

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:01</time>
some graves around and there's, there's a general over there, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:04</time>
And that was it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:04</time>
And you posted on Instagram literally a day or two before

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:08</time>
they actually removed it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:10</time>
So timing was just interesting for us and people had plenty to say on that post.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:17</time>
I appreciate that, you know, I, I do say this is section 16, one of the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:21</time>
most unknown and controversial sections.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:23</time>
And I had people argue with me, why is it controversial?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:27</time>
Well, if you look at the 200 other comments in there, you

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:30</time>
would see why it's controversial.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:32</time>
But I do have a couple comments who said, This is the most unbiased

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:38</time>
description I have seen of this monument.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:39</time>
Cause all she does is say, here's the monument.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:42</time>
Here's some people buried here

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:44</time>
And that's it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:44</time>
that's it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:45</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:45</time>
So, so that was kind of an interesting aside.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:48</time>
And again, that, that monument wasn't really the focus of our visit, you know,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:51</time>
and we'll talk about some of the, the Marines that we visited here, but it

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:54</time>
was just something very interested that they, that kind of came about shortly.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:57</time>
It was literally a week or two after we were

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:59</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:59</time>
And like I said, and we were kind of like, we stumbled upon it because

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:02</time>
we had to be rerouted because president Biden was in Arlington.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:06</time>
It, we, it was never something we were going to.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:09</time>
Make a video of but it we now have it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:12</time>
It is out there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:13</time>
It's been removed.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:13</time>
If you want to see it in Arlington before it was removed.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:16</time>
We have the video of it on Instagram.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:14:24</time>
we visited Gunny Ermey first, and we've actually talked

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:14:26</time>
about him before on this podcast.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:14:28</time>
We don't have to spend too long on him, but I'll, I'll let you kind of start

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:14:31</time>
with him and then we'll kind of venture off into some of our other Marines.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:14:34</time>
He's really

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:35</time>
Gunny Ermey.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:36</time>
He's wasn't really a gunnery sergeant, but he plays a gunnery sergeant.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:40</time>
So, and that's his most famous role in

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:14:42</time>
And he is known even in the Marine Corps as the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:45</time>
the gunny.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:46</time>
So when you hear me say that, sometimes people argue with me.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:49</time>
Well, he wasn't a gunny.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:50</time>
Yes, he was not a gunny sergeant.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:52</time>
Yes, he was in the Marine Corps.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:54</time>
Yes, he was a staff sergeant in the Marine Corps.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:56</time>
But his, he's famous for playing a gunnery sergeant.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:59</time>
So he was born in March of 1944.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:01</time>
He actually passed in April of 2018.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:04</time>
He's buried in one of those far out section.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:07</time>
I think it's a section 82 and he was a U.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:09</time>
S.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:09</time>
Marine drill instructor and he came to fame for his role of the gunnery

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:14</time>
sergeant and full metal jacket.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:16</time>
Earned him a Golden Globe and a nomination for, for best supporting actor because

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:21</time>
he was hired to be kind of a consultant.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:25</time>
Consultant to the actor who was playing a gunnery sergeant.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:29</time>
And , the actor couldn't get the cadence fast enough.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:32</time>
The insults, you know, the, did the digs good enough?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:36</time>
actually been a drill instructor,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:38</time>
had been a drill

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:38</time>
So, so for those guys, they did it for probably, Two,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:41</time>
three years, maybe four, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:44</time>
So it's, it's second nature to them, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:46</time>
The insults just come so naturally.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:50</time>
And they'll pick on any little thing, a movement, a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:53</time>
blink, a smile, a sniff, right?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:55</time>
They're able to come right to you and just pick on that thing.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:59</time>
And they're so good at what they're going to say.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:16:01</time>
I think that the clip that I put in from Full Metal Jacket was

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:16:04</time>
Gunny Ermey, you know, going up to Private Pyle and saying, Private Pyle,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:16:08</time>
do you expect me to believe you don't know if you're left from your right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:16:10</time>
And he says, No, sir.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:16:11</time>
He's so you just want to be special, you know, and he just goes right

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:16:15</time>
at it's there's no pause there, because that's what they do.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:19</time>
And, you know, I think anybody who's been through any kind of, basic,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
you know, or drill camp, you know, it's, and you've made it through,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:28</time>
you kind of have a special place in your heart for your drill instructor.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:32</time>
So for him to play that part and so well, people really liked him in that part

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:37</time>
because he was so authentic in that part.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:40</time>
He plays a lot of other roles.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:42</time>
He sometimes got typecast in that authoritative figure role.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:46</time>
Mississippi Burning is one I really liked him in, but he's also done

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:51</time>
some comedy, which we really liked and the kids, we told them about Toy

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
Story, playing Sergeant Toy Story.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:56</time>
We also like him in Saving Silverman,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:16:59</time>
for me, he's in Geico commercials, funny Geico commercials.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:02</time>
What I love most about him and what we want to honor is he was enlisted in

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:06</time>
the United States Marine Corps from in 1961 at the age of 17 he went through

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:12</time>
boot camp in San Diego, which Scott and I know well, we used to work out

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:16</time>
at that base actually and And he was in the Marine Corps, I think, until

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:22</time>
1972.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:23</time>
So he served 11 years in the Marine Corps.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:26</time>
And so we really wanted to honor his service and what he did.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:29</time>
He was always so proud of his military service.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:33</time>
He loved being called the Gunny.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:34</time>
He did USO tours.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:37</time>
He always took time to speak with people.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:40</time>
Our post of him on Instagram brings out so many wonderful

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:43</time>
He is beloved

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:46</time>
I even think his daughter, right?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:48</time>
I

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:48</time>
Yeah, he's so on our second Arlington video, actually our most

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:53</time>
famous You know, our most viewed video, he's on, he's on the thumbnail, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:57</time>
It's, it's him and and the other actor and his daughter.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:01</time>
I think that's the top pin.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:02</time>
I pinned the comment because his daughter commented on our video.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:05</time>
She's thank you so much for, for doing this.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:07</time>
And we chatted back and forth a little bit.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:09</time>
So if you actually want to see his daughter's comments on our

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:11</time>
video, you can go look that video

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:12</time>
Yes, it's it's Ermey and Charles Durning.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:16</time>
And we're, we're honoring basically the movie stars, the actors, the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:19</time>
media influencers at Arlington.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:22</time>
But again, if you want to pay your respects to Ermey, if you visit

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:26</time>
Arlington, be prepared for a walk.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:28</time>
He is the, you go in right to the right, furthest section to the right.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:33</time>
But he's definitely worth a

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:35</time>
Yeah, he's way out there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:36</time>
But it's definitely worth swinging out to section 82.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:44</time>
I just want to hit on Lee Marvin.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:46</time>
Real fast.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:47</time>
Lee Marvin is another actor who we have honored in another one of our videos

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:53</time>
but he is also a Marine and Because we stopped at Pappy Boyington who will talk

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:58</time>
about more but Lee Marvin was so close We do talk about Lee Marvin pretty quickly.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:03</time>
and his grave side is like very close to the tomb in the unknown.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:06</time>
Yes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:07</time>
and right beside Joe

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
Joe Lewis.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
Joe Lewis.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
Yep.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
so Lee Marvin was a Marine, he joins the Marine Corps in 1942.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:15</time>
He's in the Battle of Saipan.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:17</time>
He gets injured.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:19</time>
He gets injured in the buttocks.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:21</time>
It's it severs his sciatic, but he's awarded the Purple Heart because of that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:27</time>
And he has a Navy Comendation Medal.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:29</time>
And then he's discharged from the military.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:31</time>
But he's in the Pacific Theater of World War Two.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:35</time>
And he is a very decorated Marine.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:37</time>
And he, was in 20, 21 amphibious assaults on Japanese held islands.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:42</time>
So I just wanted to honor him.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:45</time>
He is a Marine.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:46</time>
Let's not forget, right?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:47</time>
Once a Marine, always a Marine.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:48</time>
He was also proud of his military service and and people still comment about him

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:54</time>
Yeah, best known for his movie roles and,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:57</time>
oh yeah, Dirty Dozen.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:58</time>
And I always say the man who shot Liberty

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:00</time>
Jimmy Stewart, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:02</time>
Great.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:02</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:03</time>
Great.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:03</time>
Great movie.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:04</time>
Now you mentioned Pappy Boyington.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:06</time>
Yes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:06</time>
So once you, for folks who might kind of be familiar with that

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:10</time>
name, because it even to me, it sounded a little bit familiar.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:13</time>
Who was he?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:22</time>
Boyington was a pilot and he was a Marine Corps pilot, which people probably

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:27</time>
would be like, Oh, I thought he was Navy.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:29</time>
No, he's Marine Corps.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:30</time>
And he received the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:33</time>
He joined the Flying Tigers.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:36</time>
And he was also part of the Black Sheep Squadron, which is BMF 214.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:42</time>
He took command of them in August 14th, 1943.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:47</time>
He in Jan, so he, I, so he.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:49</time>
Imagine he's the commanding officer of the Black Sheep.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:53</time>
About six months later, Boyington, outnumbered by Japanese Zero planes,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:57</time>
was shot down in the Pacific Ocean after downing one of the planes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:01</time>
He's captured by a Japanese submarine and he was held as a prisoner of

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:05</time>
war for more than a year and a half.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:07</time>
And he was released shortly after the surrender of Japan.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:11</time>
So this TV series, Baa Baa Black Sheep, it ran for two seasons in the late 70s.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:16</time>
It was inspired by him and his men of the Black Sheep Squadron.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:20</time>
So it builds this whole idea of these marine pilots who live by their own

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:27</time>
rules and are a little, you know, unorthodox, but when it really comes

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:32</time>
down to it, are totally awesome.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:35</time>
And

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:36</time>
he makes some guest appearances in the show.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:38</time>
He does.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:39</time>
And he meets the character playing him as an admiral or an older ranking officer

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:47</time>
because he's, he's, he's aged, of course.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:49</time>
So he's his character who plays him meets the real life him.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:55</time>
And we show a clip of that in

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:57</time>
show a clip of that in the video.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:22:11</time>
him kind of going back in there to kind of have this cameo, not as an,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:22:16</time>
as himself, because he was older.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:22:18</time>
But again, seeing someone who was recognized for his service and the

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:22:22</time>
TV show, kind of giving him that nod.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:24</time>
Yes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:25</time>
And he's also somebody who got winged in Pensacola and then he was a part

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:31</time>
of the second Marine aircraft group at San Diego Naval Air Station.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:35</time>
So someone again, who's in the same areas that we were when we were in the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:38</time>
military and then he took part in in different Aircraft carriers at Lexington

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:45</time>
and New Yorktown so just somebody, you know people will recognize the name

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:51</time>
because he's a medal of honor winner because he was a flying tiger because

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:54</time>
he was the commanding officer of The black sheep squadron because he was a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:57</time>
prisoner of war and then there was a TV show made about his squadron This

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:02</time>
the man was just larger than life

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:05</time>
and if you're listening and you're a Marine and you want to go to

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:08</time>
Arlington because we do get those comments all the time of Oh, I'm always, I've

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:11</time>
always planned on going to Arlington.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:13</time>
Thank you for making these videos.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:14</time>
So if you're listening again, I'll recommend when you go

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:18</time>
or before you go download the , Arlington National Cemetery app.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:22</time>
It is incredibly useful.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:24</time>
It is like the tool if you're going to do a lot of your own kind of walking around

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:28</time>
and you're not going to use the tram.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:30</time>
So download that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:31</time>
ANC, Alpha November Charlie, Arlington National Cemetery app, and you can plug

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:37</time>
in the person's name and it'll give you kind of the section, the grave number,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:40</time>
and it'll actually kind of give you a GPS map to where that, where that is.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:45</time>
So if you ever want to go visit some of these people, that's a

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:47</time>
great way and a great tool for those of you who are kind of smartphone

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:23:52</time>
savvy to go walk around Arlington.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:54</time>
we've used it every time.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:55</time>
It saved us.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:56</time>
I do want to say one more thing about Boyington.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:58</time>
He has a record of shooting down 28 aircraft.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:03</time>
So he beat World War One ace Eddie Rickenbacker's record of 26 with 28.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:10</time>
And that was the same day that he was shot

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:12</time>
shot down.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:12</time>
Yeah, that's, that's wild.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:14</time>
I mean, I think you even said on the video he's like a, a five times ace.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:17</time>
Yeah, five times A's because A's I, I remind people is when

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:20</time>
you've shot down five planes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:22</time>
So five times A's is, yeah, he's

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:24</time>
Now, no, not, well it was a decent, decent ways away.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:27</time>
We went over and visited I think it was Ira Hayes next after

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:32</time>
we did Ira Hayes next Ira Hayes is somebody we've

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:44</time>
really just learned a lot more

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:46</time>
I think it was our last podcast.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:50</time>
We interviewed an author who wrote a whole biography.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:55</time>
It's the third biography on Ira Hayes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:57</time>
Go back and listen to that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:59</time>
It's very, very interesting because this author is, is, you know, was.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:25:03</time>
Native American, like Ira Hayes was, and so kind of looked at Ira Hayes

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:25:08</time>
through a little bit of a different lens than some of the past biographies.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:25:11</time>
So I encourage you to go back to listen to that if you're interested

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:25:13</time>
in learning more about Ira Hayes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:25:14</time>
But what did we learn and what did we talk about in the video?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:20</time>
Ira Hayes, first of all, first and foremost, I want everyone to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:23</time>
know that he is the sixth man on the raising of the flag of Iwo Jima.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:28</time>
So that iconic photograph that was used to make the monument, the Marine Corps

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:33</time>
monument and memorial, the sixth man in the back pushing up the flagpole

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:37</time>
is Ira Hayes and his grave is off the beaten path and very unassuming.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:44</time>
And I don't even think it's part of the tram tour.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:48</time>
I just want him to have a little bit more of a presence, I feel, in Arlington

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:53</time>
because what he's what he did and what he's remembered for, and we'll talk

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:58</time>
about the memorial at the end because we took the kids there, it's such an

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:01</time>
impressive memorial and he is on it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:05</time>
It's just something that I think needs to be kind of uh,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:09</time>
celebrated a little bit more.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:11</time>
But Ira Hayes, Ira Hamilton Hayes was born in January of 1923.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:16</time>
He passes away in January of 1955.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:19</time>
And like you said, he was an American Indian from Arizona, and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:23</time>
he's a Marine in World War II.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:26</time>
He

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:26:26</time>
he's generally known as

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:28</time>
He's generally known as one of the six men of the raising of

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:31</time>
the flag at Iwo Jima, the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:35</time>
And remember, this flag was raised over Mount Suribachi on February 23rd, 1945.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:41</time>
And I think I kind of explain it in the video where there was two flag raisings.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:46</time>
Remember, the first one was smaller.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:48</time>
And when the commanding officer comes on board to Iwo Jima Island.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:53</time>
He sees it and he wants it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:55</time>
And so they get a bigger ensign and they put up a second one and he's

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:59</time>
part of that second photograph, the second raising, although they do

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:02</time>
believe he was a part of both of them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:04</time>
And I remind people as well, there's no flag pole on the ship.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:08</time>
It's not like they, let's bring extra flag poles with us.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:12</time>
So this is a pipe, like a regular that is probably like 10 times

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:18</time>
the weight, 20 times the weight.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:20</time>
So when you're thinking like, why does it take six men to raise this

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:24</time>
This is a big, long, heavy

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:27</time>
pipe.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:28</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:28</time>
So that's why it's taking six men to raise it up.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:31</time>
And he, he comes home after the raising of Iwo Jima.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:37</time>
He participates in a like a, a tour to raise funds, war bonds, and he's

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:44</time>
instrumental in helping to identify the other men in the photograph.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:48</time>
And he, he really is a part of that loan drive fundraising as well in 1946.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:55</time>
And he, I mean, he actually becomes pretty famous.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:57</time>
He does.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:58</time>
He does a song written about him, of course, by Johnny Cash,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:02</time>
but he, he's in the movie, Sands of Iwo Jima with John Wayne.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:06</time>
And John Wayne hands him the ensign with two other actors to put the flag up

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:12</time>
we show that clip in the video,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:13</time>
Jima.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:13</time>
He's the subject of another movie called The Outsider with Tony

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:16</time>
Curtis, who plays Ira Hayes we talk about this in our other podcast.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:22</time>
Tony Curtis is not an American Indian.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:25</time>
So the type of makeup and you could call it red face, but this

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:29</time>
is another conversation for film and Hollywood and things like that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:33</time>
But he's inspired many books.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:35</time>
He, The Flag of Our Fathers by Clint Eastwood is a movie.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:38</time>
He's in that movie.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:39</time>
There's a book based on that as well.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:41</time>
he was actually at the dedication of the memorial.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:45</time>
So,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:45</time>
when they dedicate the memorial.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:48</time>
In Arlington on November 10th, 1954, he's standing there with the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:52</time>
president dedicating the memorial.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:55</time>
He will pass away that January, so two months later.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:59</time>
And,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:00</time>
We talk about this more if you want to listen to the other podcast about his

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:05</time>
his life and specifically post traumatic stress and specifically how he Medicates

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:10</time>
self medicates himself with alcohol and ultimately he dies of exposure After a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:16</time>
night of drinking and so we really want to clear the author wanted to clear up just

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:21</time>
the misconceptions about his life and how he's kind of written off as an alcoholic

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:25</time>
or written off as a drunk Indian and Just make sure he gets the credit he deserves.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:30</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:31</time>
The, the author Tom Hol, who we interviewed, again, writing

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:34</time>
this biography, they sent us the biography ahead of time.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:37</time>
We got a chance to kind of look through it briefly and then talk to the author.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:40</time>
Does a very good job about kind of talking about Ira Hayes and kind of who he really

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:44</time>
was and who his people really were.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:46</time>
So highly encourage you to go back and check that out.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:49</time>
So who did we visit after that?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:52</time>
So I, I'm pretty sure we went to section 60 after that

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:56</time>
I think so.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:56</time>
and it was very special a, we're going to honor a woman Marine section

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:01</time>
60 as I remind people is one of the largest sections in Arlington is actually

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:05</time>
one of the most active sections in Arlington, still has active burials.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:09</time>
Today, but it's because it's a younger generation and so Megan McClung is

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:15</time>
the first female United States Marine Corps officer killed in combat during

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:18</time>
Iraq and she was serving as a public affairs officer when she was killed.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:24</time>
She's also the first graduate female graduate of the Naval

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:28</time>
Academy to be killed in combat.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:31</time>
So She was born in 1972.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:34</time>
She's killed December 6th, 2006.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:37</time>
And what was very interesting about visiting Major Megan McClung's grave

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:42</time>
is right in front of her grave was another woman visiting her son.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:46</time>
And I got to have a conversation with her.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:49</time>
She visits her son every Veteran's Day, his birthday.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:53</time>
She sits out there with him.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:54</time>
He was only in the military for six months when he was killed.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:57</time>
He enlisted right out of high

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:30:59</time>
See, Army, Marine?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:00</time>
I can't remember.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:01</time>
I think it was Army.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:02</time>
I

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:02</time>
it was Army, because we were having a discussion about the Army Navy game.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:05</time>
That's right.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:06</time>
That's right.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:06</time>
Yeah, she was, she kept saying Beat Navy.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:08</time>
Yes,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:09</time>
but I want to remind people, if you go to Arlington and you do encounter

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:14</time>
a family, it is okay to ask, talk about their lives, because they do want to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:21</time>
honor their loved ones and talk about their lives and not be forgotten.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:25</time>
I will say, when we were there this time, I saw more

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:29</time>
families, and I saw the range, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:32</time>
I was very, I appreciated the, the lady that you were talking

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:36</time>
to because she was very open.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:38</time>
She was very, she was more than willing to chat.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:41</time>
She was there just kind of enjoying.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:42</time>
It was actually a pretty nice, a decent day.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:45</time>
But there were other spots.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:46</time>
And I think I saw more in section 60 than in any, which kind of makes sense.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:51</time>
There were some families that were.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:52</time>
And it

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:06</time>
who was in the midst of having their moment with their person, but as

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:13</time>
someone who's going to put a chair and sit for a little while and you happen

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:17</time>
to be walking by, I think it's, it's more than I think it's respectful if

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:23</time>
you want to ask about the loved one.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:24</time>
was neat too, as we were walking around, and I think it was more in

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:28</time>
Section 60 than some of the others, is we saw the Marine Corps flags.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:32</time>
Yes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:33</time>
So, there were so many.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:34</time>
And that's when I realized, oh, they must have put all these flags for the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:38</time>
Marines because the day before was the anniversary of the Marine Corps birthday.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:42</time>
so think of the little red Marine

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:44</time>
Mm hmm.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:45</time>
yellow gold, you know, eagle, globe, and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:47</time>
anchor.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:48</time>
November 10th, 1775, Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, which is always a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:55</time>
joke, that of course the Marine Corps would be established in a bar, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:00</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:00</time>
That's classic.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:03</time>
And that's what I loved about Major McClung's grave, is it, it had her

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:06</time>
motto on there, which was like, be brief.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:10</time>
Be gone, be strong, be brief, be gone or something like

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:13</time>
that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:13</time>
Be brief, be bold, be

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:14</time>
Yes, and I said, there's nothing that reminds me more what

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:17</time>
a Marine would say than be gone.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:20</time>
And Scott and I have served with a lot of Marines.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:23</time>
So Scott and I met on the USS Tarawa, which is a Marine Corps platform ship.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:28</time>
It's a Marine Corps transport ship.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:30</time>
And so the Tarawa is named after battle of the Tarawa in the Pacific,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:34</time>
which is a Marine Corps battle.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:35</time>
And so.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:36</time>
on that ship there'd be about a thousand navy and two thousand marines and that's

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:42</time>
how they we transport them and it's a flat deck amphibious boat so we've

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:46</time>
spent our time with a lot of marines

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:50</time>
still have good friends that are

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:51</time>
we have very good friends and be gone is probably something i would never

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:55</time>
second guess the marine saying to me

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:56</time>
That's right, that's right.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:58</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:58</time>
It was it was, it was quite the visit and, and I, I really did, did enjoy it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:11</time>
So what was so interesting is as Scott and I are driving to Arlington

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:16</time>
and I'm looking up, Hey, you know, let's pick some really popular Marines to, to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:20</time>
honor at Arlington and John Glenn pops up and I'm like, John Glenn was a Marine.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:25</time>
And Scott was like, he was, and I'm like, Oh my gosh.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:28</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:29</time>
John Glenn, astronaut John Glenn was an American Marine Corps aviator.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:34</time>
And actually he was most proud of that than being an astronaut.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:34:39</time>
I was, I was so surprised because you kind of, you kind of

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:34:43</time>
boast about it all the time, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:34:45</time>
A lot of astronauts are Navy pilots, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:34:48</time>
A lot of them are.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:34:49</time>
So I just assumed, I had assumed for forever that he had been a Navy pilot.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:34:55</time>
And learning that he, he was a Marine was really neat.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:58</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:34:58</time>
So John Herschel Glenn, born in July of 1921, he passed December 8th,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:03</time>
day before my birthday in 2016, was an American Marine Corps aviator.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:08</time>
Astronaut, businessman, and politician.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:11</time>
He was the third American in space and the first American to orbit the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:15</time>
earth, circling it three times in 1962.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:18</time>
Now he was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II and he shot down three

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:23</time>
MiGs and was awarded six distinguished flying crosses and 18 air medals.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:29</time>
He was also a test pilot.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:31</time>
And that is what made him look good for the Mercury 7 program and become

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:37</time>
one of NASA's first astronauts.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:35:39</time>
kind of the path for pilots.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:35:41</time>
That's typically like they, if, if they go to be a test pilot, then they kind

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:35:44</time>
of have that, that check in the box.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:35:46</time>
Yes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:35:46</time>
For potential

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:47</time>
Yes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:48</time>
So that's on February 20th, 1962 is when he flew the friendship

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:51</time>
seven mission, becoming the first American to orbit the earth.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:55</time>
And if you see in the movie hidden figures, he's.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:58</time>
He's played by the character who wants to make sure the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:35:59</time>
numbers are checking out right.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:01</time>
And so what I appreciate about that is, yes, we've talked about

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:04</time>
a lot of astronauts will be Navy or Marine Corps pilots because

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:08</time>
you're landing on a carrier.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:09</time>
And because you're landing on a carrier, you're so precise and dialed in and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:12</time>
that's what they want you to be.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:14</time>
If you're flying the space shuttle and as a test pilot, you're flying

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:18</time>
so many different air platforms.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:21</time>
You're learning all these different nuances about size and wingspan and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:26</time>
power, and you're able to adapt quickly and understand what's happening with

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:31</time>
your aircraft, that they want that kind of pilot again in the space

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:35</time>
shuttle in case there's a problem.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:37</time>
Even when you think of the Friendship 7.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:39</time>
And it orbits three times.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:41</time>
I think it was supposed to orbit more than that, but because they

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:45</time>
were having some issues with heat, they had brought him in early.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:36:48</time>
I didn't know that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:49</time>
And so you have to be kind of quickly adaptable.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:36:52</time>
And that's kind of the Marine Corps

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:36:54</time>
Yeah, that, that one was kind of one of the neater ones for me on this

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:09</time>
particular trip because I absolutely knew who that was and I was just

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:13</time>
absolutely surprised to learn that he was a Marine, but so it was pretty neat.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:37:16</time>
Well, we made sure the kids took a picture with his grave and he's

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:37:19</time>
very close to the Tomb of the Unknown.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:37:21</time>
Like I could see Audie Murphy's grave from him.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:37:23</time>
I can see the Tomb of the Unknown from him.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:37:25</time>
So if you're visiting the Tomb of the Unknown, John Glenn is right there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:37</time>
After we visited John Glenn, finally, the President Biden had

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:42</time>
So his whole entourage has left.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:44</time>
So we were able to actually, we actually took some really cool

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:46</time>
pictures up by the Tomb of the Unknown.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:49</time>
Not right in there, but just kind of around it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:51</time>
So that got done.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:53</time>
So we were able to kind of get over, like you said, to Audie Murphy's

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:55</time>
grave and kind of visit him real, real quickly and stuff like that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:37:58</time>
But then one of the things that we wanted to do, because I had never been

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:02</time>
there, was get to the Iwo Jima Memorial.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:38:04</time>
And boy was it impressive.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:06</time>
I, I was so I don't know what to, I, I'd seen plenty of pictures, and I,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:11</time>
I didn't really have any expectations, and you had run the Marine Corps Marathon

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:15</time>
twice, so you'd, you'd been there, but I, we got there, and you park kind of

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:19</time>
around it, and then you kind of walk up, and there's this whole field from where

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:24</time>
the parking is, and you can see the Iwo Jima Memorial, and I was flabbergasted.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:29</time>
It's huge.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:38:31</time>
and it's

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:32</time>
massive.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:34</time>
I mean, you, the, Go watch our video because I, I try to get some really

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:38</time>
wide shots basically from the parking lot area and you see how small

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:42</time>
the people are walking up to it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:44</time>
I was, I was so impressed and the sky was blue and beautiful and

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:48</time>
the wind was blowing so the flag was, it was just so picturesque.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:52</time>
I was like, you know, as a videographer, amateur

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:54</time>
videographer, I was just in heaven.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:56</time>
You know, out there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:57</time>
And we got kind of like a really great picture of you

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:38:59</time>
and I in front of the memorial.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:39:01</time>
It was so impressive.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:02</time>
So we use that picture for the Walk with History Christmas card.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:06</time>
It is a 360 monument and it is beautiful on that highest peak.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:11</time>
And that's why when you run the Marine Corps Marathon,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:13</time>
it's that last 2 of your 26.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:16</time>
2 miles is up the hill to the Iwo Jima Memorial because it is so motivational.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:22</time>
Then at the end, like I said, it was dedicated in 1954 and it says

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:27</time>
on it to all Marines who have given their lives in defense of the U.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:31</time>
S.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:32</time>
since 1775.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:34</time>
And I even think it says to all the men of the Marine Corps.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:39</time>
Which I talk about because I appreciate that it says that and they haven't

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:42</time>
changed it because in the military as a woman They're not gonna update

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:48</time>
all the regs and all the stuff.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:49</time>
You just assume when they say Serviceman or it's you you're a part of that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:54</time>
I never I never batted an eye, I would have so many people

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:39:58</time>
call me, sir, by mistake.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:00</time>
And I never, I just don't sweat it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:02</time>
It's not a big deal.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:03</time>
Cause you just get used to, so used to saying it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:05</time>
And so I just always encompassed myself when it says men, I'm a part of that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:10</time>
It's inspired by that iconic photograph of the six Marines.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:13</time>
Like I said, Ira Hayes is the last one in the back, So I wanted to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:18</time>
make sure that people understand.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:20</time>
It's one of the only few places that is designated to fly the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:25</time>
American flag 24 hours a day.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:28</time>
And it's required, it's officially required.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:30</time>
And JFK wrote that into law in June of 1961, and that's why

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:35</time>
it'll always be lit as well.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:40:38</time>
Oh, is that

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:39</time>
Mm-Hmm.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:39</time>
. So if you see it at night, it's always gonna have the light on the flag and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:43</time>
the flag will always be flying over it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:40:45</time>
So I think that's so

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:40:46</time>
It was so cool and it has all the names of kind of all the The wars and

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:40:51</time>
that kind of the famous, you know battles that they've been in like engraved all

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:40:55</time>
around the monument And it's it really is kind of hard to put into words.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:00</time>
It's it's not the same Seeing it in a video, seeing it in

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:04</time>
a picture, as being there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:06</time>
It's not the same.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:08</time>
Being there in person is a completely different experience.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:41:12</time>
picture, it's not the same.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:41:18</time>
Being there in person, it would completely be different.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:30</time>
it only takes 10 minutes because you're driving around D.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:32</time>
C.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:32</time>
And driving around D.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:33</time>
C.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:33</time>
is It is awful.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:36</time>
I'm sorry Jen knows and if you've listened to this podcast and I

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:40</time>
talk about driving around DC.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:41:41</time>
I hate driving around there It's it's brutal, but absolutely worth it.

Whether it was flying high above the earth, or bravery resulting in one

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:42:10</time>
of World War II's most iconic flag raising photographs, these heroes will

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:42:16</time>
never be forgotten for their service.

The Story
