Blue Angels & Noseart: Aviation History Road Trip to Virginia Beach

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:00</time>
I just sat down in a chair, not knowing they're assigned

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:03</time>
chairs, especially the front row.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:05</time>
And I sat right in the front row.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:06</time>
I don't know who's chair I sat in.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:07</time>
And, uh, the CO was there and the CO looked at me and he was like,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:11</time>
like, you know, and in colorful Navy words, he asked me who I was.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:16</time>
And I told him I was a midshipman and I wanted to fly an F14.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:19</time>
And he told me in colorful words to get out.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:22</time>
And I told him no, that this was my dream and I wasn't leaving till I got a flight.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:26</time>
And he started to laugh.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:28</time>
And he asked me what school I went to because he said I

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:31</time>
had a lot of, for a woman.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:34</time>
And I said, I went to Penn State and he said, Big Ten, you're flying.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:37</time>
I got very lucky that day.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:49</time>
Welcome to Talk With History.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:52</time>
I'm your host, Scott, here with my wife and historian, Jen.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:54</time>
Hello.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:55</time>
On this podcast, we give you insights into our history inspired world travels,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:00</time>
YouTube channel journey, and examine history through deeper conversations

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:04</time>
with the curious, the explorers, and the history lovers out there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:09</time>
Jen.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:11</time>
Yes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:13</time>
Before we start talking about the history of air shows, as I'm sure

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:17</time>
everybody knows that this is about, it's going to be the show title.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:21</time>
I have a joke for you.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:22</time>
Oh, goodness.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:23</time>
Okay.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:24</time>
What happens to a bad airplane joke?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:01:29</time>
Goes up in

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:30</time>
flames.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:30</time>
It never lands.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:31</time>
It never lands.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:35</time>
So as you know, uh, this is, this show is about, uh, the history of

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:40</time>
air shows and women in aviation.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:42</time>
So, uh, I'm excited to...

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:44</time>
to jump into that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:45</time>
But before we do, I always like to ask people for reviews.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:48</time>
We actually did get a recent review, a five star review from Lady Blackwood.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:53</time>
Sounds fancy.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:54</time>
Uh, five star review.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:55</time>
My kind of stuff.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:56</time>
I've always been a Big World War II history buff.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:00</time>
This is freaking amazing.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:02</time>
Why, thank you, Miss Lady Blackwood.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:04</time>
I don't know, she must have heard of World

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:05</time>
War II show.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:06</time>
Yeah, must have.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:07</time>
Must have just absolutely loved it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:09</time>
Um, so, again, please leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or Five Stars and Spotify.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:15</time>
Uh, you know, unlike the History Channel, we are out there doing it and actually

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:19</time>
covering history, and we were at Naval Air Station Oceana this past week, and we're

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:23</time>
going to talk a little bit about that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:28</time>
From the death defying stunts of early aviators to the trail blazing women

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:33</time>
who broke barriers in the clouds, this episode of Talk With History is a tribute

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:38</time>
to the incredible individuals who have shaped the thrilling world of aviation.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:43</time>
And it was only a few years ago that a young Jennifer Mitchell

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:48</time>
went to an air show and it forever changed the course of her life.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:54</time>
And that young Jennifer is now sitting with us today

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:57</time>
talking about naval aviation.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:59</time>
So Jen, let's talk about the history of air shows, what they were celebrating

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:03</time>
over at Naval Air Station Oceana in 50 years of women in aviation.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:09</time>
That's so cool.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:10</time>
Thanks, babe.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:11</time>
So air shows, you know, they're kind of, uh, Been around since aviation in general.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:18</time>
First air show was in 1909 in France, and then America wasn't far behind.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:23</time>
Our first air show here was in 1910.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:25</time>
1909?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:26</time>
Wow.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:27</time>
And when you think, uh, first, the first flight was 1907.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:31</time>
It's not long after.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:32</time>
Sure, everybody wants to see it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:33</time>
Everyone wants to see it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:34</time>
And it really was, at the time, people were just dumbfounded by

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:40</time>
this new apparatus that could fly.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:42</time>
I'm sure, I'm sure the

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:43</time>
conversation probably went like, I don't believe it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:45</time>
Come with me, I'll show you.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:47</time>
And people traveled to fields, to, you know, where, um, runways and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:54</time>
aircraft were, and to be able to see them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:57</time>
And to see what they can do, and pilots practicing, and how they could fly.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:01</time>
And like I said, in 1910, they came here to America.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:04</time>
They were pretty popular, um, World War I.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:07</time>
after made them even more popular.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:09</time>
So after World War One, of course, and then you get kind of two types of air

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:14</time>
shows, you get aerobatic air shows, kind of like the one we saw where people are

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:17</time>
going to do stunts, or you get static air shows where people you just want

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:20</time>
to see the aircraft on the tarmac.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:22</time>
And you get to go in the aircraft and look around or it can be a combination of both.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:26</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:26</time>
And that's what we did this, this last, actually just yesterday.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:28</time>
And that's why this podcast is a little bit late because

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:31</time>
we were exhausted yesterday.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:33</time>
We were out there all day climbing in the aircraft with the kids and seeing

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:04:37</time>
some amazing aviation acrobatics, which we'll talk a little bit more about

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:41</time>
later.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:42</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:42</time>
And so like, you know, the beginning of air shows really were People traveling

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:47</time>
to the air show and then after world war one it became more of a the air

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:51</time>
show came to you Yeah, traveling around.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:53</time>
Yeah, they called it barnstorming because it would come to farm areas, right and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:59</time>
Basically, you know fly by barns and then

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:02</time>
that's where all the kind of large tracts of land.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:05</time>
Yeah, we're had Straight places for people to land

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:08</time>
and take off exactly and that's where really like You know, started to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:14</time>
encroach on the masses because again, it's still a relatively new thing unless

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:19</time>
you're in the military or you have a lot of money or you live close to an airport,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:22</time>
you're not going to see aircraft light.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:25</time>
It's not like today where they're readily available.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:28</time>
And in barnstorming airshow, time, people would also take people

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:32</time>
up flying and that would be like their first time ever flying.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:36</time>
It would be like the two seater, the by the bi wing aircraft that

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:40</time>
would take people up flying.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:41</time>
And so that was a very big thing to do in those early air shows.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:45</time>
And again, it was more of a show where you sat and watched the airplanes kind of

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:49</time>
fly around and what they did and then they would come and land and then if you paid

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:53</time>
a couple bucks you could fly in the back.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:56</time>
And that's how basically pilots made their lives, their livelihood.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:01</time>
But what we went to was like a military air show.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:04</time>
Yeah, it wasn't civilian.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:06</time>
Uh, I don't, the news was there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:08</time>
Um, they had their

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:09</time>
helicopter.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:10</time>
Definitely military focused for us getting on.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:12</time>
So Naval Air Station Oceana.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:14</time>
Think Virginia Beach, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:16</time>
Norfolk area.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:17</time>
And I mean, that is like kind of the.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:20</time>
Hub here on the on the east coast for naval aviation.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:24</time>
I mean aside from maybe Pensacola

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:25</time>
sure So, you know, I have sistered at the historic marker that

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:29</time>
says naval aviation started in here in Norfolk in 1911 and So if you get

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:36</time>
if you're following the timeline first air show 1909 France first air show

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:40</time>
in America 1910 Naval aviation starts 1911 you know aviation is just being

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:47</time>
innovated so quickly at this time.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:50</time>
But Oceana doesn't open, uh, as an air station until 1943.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:56</time>
Okay.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:56</time>
So during World War II.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:58</time>
And then, uh, the first air show was in 1953.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:02</time>
So 10 years after that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:04</time>
So we went in, uh, 2023.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:07</time>
So we went to the 70th air show.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:09</time>
Oh, that's cool.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:09</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:10</time>
So that was really cool.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:10</time>
And didn't realize

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:11</time>
that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:12</time>
Yeah, so that was really neat.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:13</time>
And then of course, um, we got to see some static aircraft.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:18</time>
There's lots of, today there's a lot more than, uh, would be in the older days.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:23</time>
Well,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:23</time>
and that was one of the things that I was really looking forward

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:26</time>
to because our kids are old, are old enough now to kind of appreciate

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:29</time>
and want, still want to do it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:30</time>
They're not too cool, right, to, to not to want to go do those things.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:34</time>
Yes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:34</time>
But also what we got to do, and we'll talk more about Nose Art later.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:39</time>
That's a separate episode.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:39</time>
Yes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:40</time>
We made an episode from there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:41</time>
Yep.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:42</time>
Mm hmm.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:42</time>
We...

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:42</time>
Um, but you got to talk to the kids about this is what mom flew when,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:47</time>
you know, this is what I flew.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:48</time>
This is, you know, not me personally, but this was you talking to the kids

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:51</time>
and like, I flew this helicopter and I landed this other, you know, big ass

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:55</time>
helicopter over here, the sea stallion.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:57</time>
I landed this on the Tarawa.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:59</time>
You know, so you got to talk to the kids about that, right?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:03</time>
Yeah, it was very, it was neat for me that I think it was the first time I

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:06</time>
actually got to see the helicopter I flew.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:08</time>
And so I flew the SH 60 Bravo, which is a Blackhawk helicopter

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:12</time>
painted silver, uh, for the Navy.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:14</time>
And we call it a Seahawk.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:16</time>
But, so they had a Blackhawk there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:17</time>
And so the kids got to actually see the helicopter mommy flew.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:20</time>
And I don't think they've ever gotten to see that before.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:24</time>
And I did a whole episode on nose art and things that are painted on the aircraft.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:28</time>
And I gave a little.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:29</time>
background of that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:30</time>
And so we were filming that episode as well, but I was also pointing to other

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:33</time>
stuff on the helicopter and people were listening and paying attention and just

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:38</time>
everything you have to do as a pilot, how you preflight every time you fly and what

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:43</time>
you're preflighting, what you're opening and what you're kind of looking for.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:47</time>
And then we went into the sea stallion and there was a female pilot there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:52</time>
And I was speaking to her for a little bit and they are

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:55</time>
decommissioning the sea stallion.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:57</time>
So we talked

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:58</time>
about her and you were telling me before we kind of got up closer to the

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:02</time>
sea stallion, we were standing in line, how old these aircraft were and they just

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:05</time>
kind of keep keeping them around because.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:07</time>
I mean, they use these heavily, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:11</time>
They're heavy

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:11</time>
transport.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:12</time>
Yeah, I mean, so a sea stallion is a beast.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:14</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:14</time>
Seven rotors, I mean.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:16</time>
And you can basically get one of the small tanks inside of them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:19</time>
Plus they can transport a lot of troops.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:21</time>
So they are, they're heavy lifting, heavy load.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:25</time>
Um, and, but they're just getting too hard to fix now.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:30</time>
Too expensive.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:31</time>
Long of a tooth, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:32</time>
Yes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:32</time>
And they had some...

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:33</time>
It was a lot of army reserve.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:35</time>
Mm-hmm.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:35</time>
, you know, that was there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:36</time>
So they had like a CH 47, which is Chinook.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:38</time>
Yep.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:39</time>
Um, and some other larger aircraft.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:42</time>
Three.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:42</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:42</time>
Mm-hmm.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:42</time>
, they had the 50 threes and then, you know, um, not really jets that you could

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:46</time>
get up CLO per up close and personal to, but they had T 30 fours, I think.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:49</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:50</time>
Three.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:50</time>
Yep.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:51</time>
They had T 30 fours.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:51</time>
They had a couple eighteens out there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:53</time>
Like you said, you could get close, we could get close to.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:55</time>
picture them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:56</time>
And they had the blue angels off in the distance.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:59</time>
So I took some video of the blue angels.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:01</time>
You couldn't get close to them either because they're flying

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:03</time>
now.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:03</time>
Speaking of the blue angels, and I think I had heard this, but I didn't really

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:06</time>
dawn on me, but they have their first female flying for the blue angels.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:10</time>
And so that was kind of the big thing on Sunday.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:12</time>
They were emphasizing 50 years of women in aviation, 50 years of women in aviation.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:16</time>
And you were telling me, and for those listening, Jen was winged in 2001.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:21</time>
Yes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:22</time>
And Jen's always told me and she kind of talking about it again as we're

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:26</time>
walking around this air show and there's multiple female pilots around and there's

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:30</time>
female air crew and Jen would you would talk about when you would go to air

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:34</time>
shows when you were flying and you'd be the only female pilot at an air show.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:10:39</time>
Big air

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:40</time>
show like this.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:40</time>
Yeah, I mean, I really got to see a lot of change in aviation I mean we

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:46</time>
think 50 years of women in aviation It doesn't mean 50 years of women in the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:51</time>
majority of aviation or in a dating aviation These are just women who were

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:55</time>
the first to go to flight school and pass It doesn't even mean that they

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:58</time>
flew in combat because they didn't open combat for women until the 1990s.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:04</time>
And then even then you had to qualify in those combat aircraft

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:07</time>
to be able to fly in combat.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:09</time>
And that took time as well.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:11</time>
And it wasn't easy.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:13</time>
And so these women, you know, ones or twosies here and there,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:16</time>
but it wasn't like a big group.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:18</time>
And when you think about it, you know, we're just getting the first

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:21</time>
female blue angel, Amanda Lee.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:23</time>
She flies number three in 2022.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:26</time>
Thunderbirds were a little before the Navy.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:28</time>
They had their first female in 2005, but it's still relatively new

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:34</time>
and they've had one other female.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:38</time>
So it's not like it's like half of the pilots are female.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:41</time>
And even then.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:42</time>
in squadrons today.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:43</time>
It's not like half of the pilots are female.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:46</time>
It doesn't really work that way.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:47</time>
We're getting more women.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:48</time>
And so I was talking to the air crewman on the 53 who was a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:52</time>
woman, and the pilot was a woman.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:54</time>
So I was like, Oh my gosh, to see a female crewman.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:57</time>
I never saw a female air crewman.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:59</time>
That's the person who's in the back of the air, the helicopter when you fly.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:02</time>
I asked her, have you had an all female?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:04</time>
flight.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:05</time>
And she goes, I had one last week.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:07</time>
That was never even a possibility when I flew.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:11</time>
There wasn't even enough women to have an all female flight.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:15</time>
I flew one time with another woman.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:17</time>
I flew with Amy Bowerschmidt, who's now a admiral.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:21</time>
I flew with her in, um, when I was going through the rag and for the, for.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:26</time>
60 Bravos, and that was probably my only Female flight that I ever

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:31</time>
had and so it was it's amazing to See what has happened in aviation

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:38</time>
like I feel like I was halfway Yeah,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:41</time>
you were I mean think about 50 years.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:12:42</time>
Yeah, it was like 20 years ago that you were you were at these air shows

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:46</time>
Yeah, you know so I feel like I was halfway, so I always tell the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:49</time>
story I we flew I did my cross country when you get your wings you do a cross

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:53</time>
country and I Did my cross country to Dayton, Ohio for the air show.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:58</time>
They do a big air show there 'cause the Wright brothers are from Dayton

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:01</time>
and that's where the Air Force base is.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:03</time>
So they do a big air show, almost like this air show, which is a static

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:06</time>
display air show and aerobatics are happening at the same time.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:09</time>
And I think the Blue Angels even flew there at that air show.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:12</time>
And um, so we made our helicopter static.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:16</time>
Kind of like what we saw when you could climb in the aircraft

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:19</time>
and look around it and touch it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:20</time>
And so I'm standing in front of the helicopter talking about the helicopter

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:25</time>
and I tell people I notice a lot of little girls coming over and I noticed

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:29</time>
a lot of dads bringing the little girls over and I, I'm still a student

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:33</time>
pilot, so I'm just like, it's terrible to say, but I'm just making stuff up.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:37</time>
I did this a lot.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:38</time>
Even on the Tarawa.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:38</time>
I remember my first...

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:39</time>
You were, you

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:40</time>
were really bad about that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:43</time>
I was like, my first day on the Tarawa.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:44</time>
I'm a pilot on a LAJ and I don't know.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:47</time>
And they put me in charge of tours.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:50</time>
I don't know.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:50</time>
This is where the missiles are.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:51</time>
I don't know anything about surface Navy.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:53</time>
Jen, we don't have that on the ship.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:54</time>
The missiles, they put them over there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:56</time>
And people were asking me, they really have those on the ship?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:58</time>
I'm like, yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:59</time>
But um, so same thing with the helicopter.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:02</time>
I was like, oh, this is what this does.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:03</time>
And this is, I do the basics of what things did.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:06</time>
But I would ask him, do you want to sit in the cockpit?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:08</time>
And I'm like, sure.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:09</time>
So I would lift him up and put in the cockpit.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:10</time>
And, and I just, then, you know, you have a break, you're allowed to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:15</time>
walk around the air show, go, go, go grab something to eat, you know?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:18</time>
And as I'm walking around this air show, I just remember going, Oh my gosh,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:22</time>
there's no other women pilots here.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:23</time>
And this whole.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:25</time>
air show.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:25</time>
I'm in my flight suit.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:27</time>
I'm the only woman and it dawns on me.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:30</time>
That's why all these little girls are coming over to my helicopter because

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:35</time>
it's something they can see, you know, some modeling of what you could be

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:39</time>
if you want to be a female aviator.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:41</time>
Um, when I was a young kid and my parents took me to see the Thunderbirds in

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:45</time>
Wyoming, uh, when we were stationed at F.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:48</time>
E.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:48</time>
Warren Air Force Base, I don't even remember there being a female pilot.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:52</time>
But I didn't care.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:54</time>
I just wanted to be a pilot and nothing was going to stop me from

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:59</time>
doing that, uh, through my career.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:04</time>
There I have had some women who definitely were influencers for me, but it really

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:10</time>
was great that, uh, that I had some really great men who championed my career.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:16</time>
And I, one of the things I talk about as, um, a lot is my flight in an F 14.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:21</time>
When I was a midshipman off the USS Eisenhower, only midshipman

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:25</time>
who got a hop, uh, in a F 14.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:28</time>
And I was a female at the time.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:29</time>
This is 1998 on the USS Eisenhower in the Mediterranean.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:33</time>
So off the coast of, uh, in Europe.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:37</time>
And uh, I walk into this F 18 squad, F 14 squadron, like

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:41</time>
this is the heyday of Top Gun.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:43</time>
F 14 squadron, skull and crossbones on their tail of their F 14.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:48</time>
Jolly Rogers.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:48</time>
Jolly Rogers.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:48</time>
I mean these dudes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:49</time>
That squadron is actually there at the airshow.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:50</time>
Yeah, these dudes are no joke.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:52</time>
Like, they're the guys.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:53</time>
And um, I walk into their ready room.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:57</time>
So a ready room is a room where you all sit.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:58</time>
sit, you notice it in Top Gun, but they're all sitting in the chairs facing forward

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:02</time>
facing like the commanding officer who's ever giving like the brief for the day.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:06</time>
And when your briefs aren't happening, you sit in there and kind of play plan or

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:11</time>
listen to the radio or write letters home.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:13</time>
That's like your hangout room.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:15</time>
And so I walked into the room, and I just sat down in a chair, not knowing their

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:21</time>
assigned chair, especially the front row.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:23</time>
And I sat right in the front row.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
I don't know who shares that in.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:26</time>
And, uh, the CO was there and the CO looked at me and he was like, you know,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:30</time>
and in colorful Navy words, he asked me who I was and I told him I was a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:35</time>
midshipman and I wanted to fly an F 14 and he told me in colorful words to get out.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:40</time>
And I told him no, that this was my dream and I wasn't leaving until I got a flight.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:44</time>
And he started to laugh and he asked me what school I went to because he

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:49</time>
said I had a lot of, for a woman.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:52</time>
And I said, I went to Penn State and he said, Big Ten, you're flying.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
I got very lucky that day because that commanding officer had gone to Indiana

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:59</time>
University, which is in the Big Ten.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:02</time>
And he, uh, he was all for me flying.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:06</time>
So the minute his attitude changed around, and it was a CEO, he's county officer.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:09</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:10</time>
Everybody in the squadron's attitude changed around.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:12</time>
I, we started laughing.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:15</time>
He shook my hand.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:16</time>
We went over to the schedule.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:17</time>
We picked a flight together.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:19</time>
He was going to fly at the same time in his jet.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:22</time>
He told me to come back the next day, get fitted for a G suit,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:25</time>
you know, and meet the guys.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:26</time>
And, and I came back the next day and they gave me squadron patches.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:31</time>
They made sure I wore their patches while I flew with them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:33</time>
I wore, you know, you don't get your own G suit.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:36</time>
So I wore another pilots.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:37</time>
I'm Se you know, similar size to, and we talk about this, a woman pilot being

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:42</time>
similar size to a man at the time.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:43</time>
'cause cockpits are built for men.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:45</time>
And, um, I went through like pre-flight stuff, like how do you

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:49</time>
learn to do stuff in the back?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:50</time>
'cause you still have to be an effective co-pilot.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:54</time>
Yep.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:54</time>
You're changing radios in the back.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:56</time>
You're doing things in the back.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:57</time>
You have to, and I'd already gone through all the qualifications

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:59</time>
to fly in an ejection seat.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:01</time>
Uh, I had done all that as a midshipman in case this was to happen.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:06</time>
on my midshipman cruise.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:07</time>
You go through all these qualifications in case you do get a hop in an F14.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:12</time>
It was very rare, but it could happen.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:14</time>
So they made sure you went to your midshipman cruise prepared

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:17</time>
with the qualifications.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:19</time>
And so I had done all of that stuff, but I still needed to learn certain things,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:22</time>
different frequencies and stuff like that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:25</time>
And, uh, and the day I'm, I'm getting geared up in my G suit, which was it

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:31</time>
to even get in that thing is like a workout because it's a, it's a pain to

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:37</time>
zip this tight thing around you all the way up to like right under your chest.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:41</time>
Uh, the CO was there getting in his G suit and he put, um, Jolly Ranchers

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:46</time>
in my pocket on your shoulder.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:48</time>
And he said, if you start to feel sick, just suck on these, like even

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:51</time>
taking care of me to that extreme, uh, which was fantastic because nothing

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:58</time>
will prepare you for what a cat shot.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:01</time>
is like in an F 14.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:03</time>
And so we...

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:03</time>
And a cat

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:04</time>
shot for those who are listening is basically the

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:06</time>
catapulting you off of the aircraft

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:08</time>
carrier.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:08</time>
Yes.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
So my mom was just talking to me today about different countries now are

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:13</time>
coming out with their own aircraft carriers with ramps on the front, right?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:17</time>
And a ramp will catapult you up into the sky and you'll hit transitional lift.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:21</time>
You're going to dip, but it gives you some more altitude for that dip.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:25</time>
But the Navy just...

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:26</time>
catapult you off.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:29</time>
Just shoot you off.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:30</time>
There's no ramp.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:31</time>
You better hit that, those thrusters fast.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:33</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:33</time>
So you just get shot off and, uh, and so nothing prepares

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:37</time>
you for what that feels like.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:38</time>
And then I remember he said, are you ready?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:41</time>
And I was like, ready for what?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:42</time>
And he did, like, you see the maneuvers at the, um, the The, the Blue Angels do.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:47</time>
He pulled the straight up, geez, like we went vertical straight up.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:52</time>
Were

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:52</time>
you, so you were

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:52</time>
flying with the CO?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:54</time>
No, I flew with his name, callsign was Rhino.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:56</time>
Okay.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:56</time>
I flew with one of the, he's a lieutenant, which you always are, you're, you're most.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:00</time>
dangerous pilots.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:03</time>
And CO went up in his own jet, probably didn't want to fly with them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:07</time>
And honestly, he probably didn't want to do a lot of the flying,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:10</time>
probably made someone else fly.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:11</time>
And he just sat in the back.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:13</time>
But um, so I flew with Rhino and we we shot straight up.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:17</time>
That was amazing.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:18</time>
And then he's like, Okay, now watch the speedometer.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:21</time>
And we broke the sound barrier.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:23</time>
And we did some barrel rolls.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:24</time>
And then that's when the CO came up and joined up.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:26</time>
on us.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:27</time>
We form flu.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:28</time>
So again, a lot with the Blue Angels do form flying is.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:32</time>
You do it a lot in the military, uh, it's, it's, I wouldn't say it's, I hate

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:37</time>
to say this, it's kind of easy flying.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:38</time>
I know the Blue Angels do it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:40</time>
It's easy because you know exactly what you have to do.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:44</time>
When you fly form, you fly a sight picture of the other aircraft and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:48</time>
you just tuck yourself into that sight picture and you hold it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:52</time>
And you never take your eyes off the other aircraft.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:56</time>
You're never looking at your own gauges.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:58</time>
You're never looking away.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:00</time>
You just look at the other aircraft and you fixate on looking and the whole time

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:04</time>
you're holding that site picture and you're maneuvering your controls just a

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:07</time>
little bit just to keep that site picture.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:10</time>
So if they're.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:11</time>
if they're barrel rolling, if they're flipping around, you really don't know it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:16</time>
You're doing it with them because you're holding the site picture so

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:19</time>
tight that they, which is what the blue angels do when they barrel roll.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:24</time>
You're just going with them because you're holding the site.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:27</time>
So when they say, when the announcer says, you know, their

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:29</time>
wings are only 18 inches apart.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:32</time>
That's all they're focusing on is keeping that wing position the same spot 18 inches

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:36</time>
apart You have visuals that you hit there's probably for them like they're

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:39</time>
probably keeping a wing tip in the V of Navy They're probably keeping and if you

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:43</time>
keep this in this picture here in this picture here You know, you're exactly

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:47</time>
where you need to be tucked into the aircraft and then when you break away, of

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:51</time>
course That's the first time you'll look at your controls in your breakaway But

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:54</time>
once you're in form, you're just tight in looking at the other aircraft the entire

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:01</time>
And so we, we do that cause you form up in a lot of that you practice because

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:05</time>
of refueling because a lot of refueling is kind of like this form flying.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:10</time>
It has to be perfection cause you have to catch the basket with the refueling probe.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:14</time>
So, you know, people were asking, why do you form fly?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:17</time>
Most of the time it's.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:18</time>
It's a refueling practice because you refuel in the air as Navy pilots.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:24</time>
So you were

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:22:24</time>
flying with the Jolly Ranchers, and then you got to land back down.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:22:27</time>
Yeah,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:27</time>
so we, it was great.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:29</time>
I mean, it was great.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:29</time>
He played the Indiana fight song.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:32</time>
And I started laughing and, and I mean, Honestly, you see the aircraft

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:37</time>
carrier become like, it looks like a postage stamp and then it becomes

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:41</time>
like a little dot in the ocean that you don't even see it anymore.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:44</time>
So it's like, you're going to land back on that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:47</time>
So when you go back for your landing, you know, you always know, like

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:50</time>
the, the jet pilot's going to set up for his approach way for out there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:54</time>
It's going to have, they're going to call the ball, which

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:56</time>
is basically lining a ball up.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:58</time>
on a line.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:22:59</time>
And, uh, the other.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:00</time>
So another thing I know I'm talking aviation.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:03</time>
So if anyone loves aviation talk, that's what this podcast is.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:07</time>
The landing control officers or the landing safety officers, the LSOs are

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:10</time>
all the other pilots in the squadron.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:12</time>
That's who's calling your landing.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:15</time>
So you're graded as how good of a pilot you are by how good you land.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:20</time>
So if you think how competitive we all are, we are going to help

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:23</time>
you land great, but we don't want you to have a perfect landing.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:29</time>
So we want you to land great, we want to get you safely on the aircraft.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:33</time>
And then as soon as you land, we'll grade your landing.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:35</time>
So it's like, okay, boo, that was great.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:37</time>
Okay, that that was a B.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:38</time>
You know, so it's kind of like, we're going to get you in perfection.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:44</time>
And then as soon as you land, we're going to grade you.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:47</time>
You know, we're not going to give you the best grades.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:48</time>
You have to earn your grades.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:49</time>
Kind of like a gymnast or figure skater.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:52</time>
You have to years and years of doing it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:53</time>
You might've done that perfectly as a newbie, but you don't

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:57</time>
deserve the good grades yet.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:23:59</time>
Um, so there's four wires that go across an aircraft carrier.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:05</time>
And the tail hook comes down, you can catch any one, but you're

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:08</time>
really shooting for wire three.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:10</time>
So wire three is a perfect landing and that's three from the back.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:13</time>
So if you count one, two, three from the rear, it's the third wire.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:18</time>
And then if you miss all four, it's a, it's a wave off because

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:21</time>
you're landing at full throttle.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:22</time>
in case you don't hit any of them, you're, you can, you're

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:26</time>
full throttle to take off again.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:28</time>
And so we hit, we caught number three and that again, that jolt

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:32</time>
of the stop is another thing.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:35</time>
That's just, you don't, no one can prepare you for that.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:38</time>
But anyway, so.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:39</time>
In essence, I flew in an F 14 with the Jolly Rogers, 1998, halfway, you know,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:45</time>
and I got this great experience because of this male, uh, commanding officer

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:50</time>
who believed in women in the military.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:52</time>
So I see the Jolly Rogers at the air show that we're at yesterday.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:57</time>
And now they're F 18s.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:58</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:24:59</time>
And you made a beeline

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:24:59</time>
for them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:00</time>
And I made a And I woke up because I wanted, they're selling t shirts.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:03</time>
So a lot of times what happens at these air shows is squadrons make

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:07</time>
their money for Christmas parties and other like hail and farewells

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:13</time>
through selling stuff from their squadron, stickers, patches, t shirts.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:17</time>
And so they're always out there doing air shows selling

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:21</time>
certain things to the public.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:23</time>
And so I made a beeline to get a t shirt and there was a bunch of

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:26</time>
pilots, young guys, lieutenants.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:29</time>
You know, you're probably, what, like twenty eight?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:33</time>
Uh, six?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:33</time>
Seven?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:34</time>
Yeah, like twenty six.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:35</time>
Like, like, young pilots, right?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:37</time>
Usually you're, you're most hotshot pilots.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:39</time>
And I tell them my whole story, and I felt like, you came in, you're like, I'm

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:43</time>
gonna go sit over here with the kids and eat, and I felt like, after our words, I'm

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:46</time>
like, was I like the old lady telling you?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:25:50</time>
It's very possible.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:52</time>
Cause that's like, for them, it's 25 years ago.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:55</time>
Probably before some of them were born.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:57</time>
It's highly likely.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:25:58</time>
So we're like this old lady's coming in talking about F14s, but they were nice.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:04</time>
I bought a t shirt from them.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:05</time>
So that's, so that's cool.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:07</time>
Like what you're going to get.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:08</time>
at air shows is you're going to get the veterans, you're going to get the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:13</time>
people who had done it before come in and tell their, their, you know,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:16</time>
their sea stories, their air stories.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:18</time>
And I always enjoyed that too, as a young pilot.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:24</time>
So celebrating 50 years of aviation, it was women in aviation, women in aviation.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:29</time>
So in 1973, they had the first group of eight women start flight

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:32</time>
school, Navy flight school.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:34</time>
And, uh, in 1974, so a year later, they had six of them earn their wings of gold.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:40</time>
So that's what they call the 50 years of women in aviation.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:44</time>
And then they're celebrating like Amanda Lee being a blue angel.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:48</time>
And they have other firsts as well that they had celebrated the first

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:53</time>
commander of a, uh, you know, F 18 squadron earlier at the there.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:26:59</time>
So they had done a lot of these women first.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:02</time>
Um, and I think it kind of sent us along the Superbowl had that women fly over.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:08</time>
So, right.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:10</time>
So there, so there is a lot of this.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:12</time>
Women in aviation celebration that's happening this year so that the air

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:17</time>
show kind of celebrated that but It was great for the kids because they had set

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:27:22</time>
up in some hangers a lot of like stem Experiments that they could play with

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:28</time>
yeah And I I would assume right for if for those listening if you

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:32</time>
never brought Family to an air show it that's one of the great things

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:34</time>
to To really bring your family to because it's typically these are kind

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:41</time>
of, you know, Navy, military kind of, you know, their face to the public.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:45</time>
It's not just them out there kind of doing the show.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:48</time>
It's a little bit of recruiting, but it's also, it doesn't feel

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:52</time>
like a big recruiting event.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:53</time>
I mean, they have the obvious kind of recruiter spots out there with the Marines

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:56</time>
and their pull up bar and all that stuff.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:27:58</time>
And, um, but it really was opportunities for the kids to just get out there

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:02</time>
and see all the cool things that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:05</time>
are throughout the D.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:06</time>
O.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:06</time>
D.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:06</time>
and the military

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:08</time>
and NASA.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:10</time>
And then even the performers, they had like the leapfrogs.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:12</time>
So they had the Navy SEALs parachute in and they had

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:16</time>
civilian and military performers.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:19</time>
They had like this Red Bull.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:21</time>
Helicopter that kept doing like loop de loops and I'm like,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:24</time>
I've never seen that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:25</time>
I've never seen a helicopter do a loop de loop because I honestly

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:28</time>
didn't know it was possible.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:30</time>
And then I saw it do one and I, you were in like one of the helicopters

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:33</time>
with the kids or something like that.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:34</time>
I was like, Jen, that helicopter just did a loop de loop.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:37</time>
I didn't, I'm not sure what I'm looking at, at

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:40</time>
here.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:40</time>
Because that was always my party joke, right?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:43</time>
Because people are, I would ask me, can a helicopter go inverted?

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:45</time>
And I always would say once.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:28:47</time>
You're right.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:48</time>
You always say, say once it really was pretty incredible and

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:51</time>
we'll bring it back around to kind of some of the history, but some

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:54</time>
of the aircraft that were there, they had error, you know, acrobatic

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:28:58</time>
national champion flyers and the F 22 Raptor, which absolutely blew my mind.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:03</time>
It just.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:03</time>
It seems like it's defying physics and the law of gravity.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:06</time>
It's, it's really pretty incredible.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:10</time>
Now, one of the things that they actually called out while we were there, one of

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:14</time>
the announcers said when the blue angels started flying was that the blue angels

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:18</time>
had actually started performing in like the 1940s and I thought that was actually.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:22</time>
Um, I was, I was surprised, but I mean, like, like we said,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:27</time>
they started flying planes.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:28</time>
Everybody started wanting

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:28</time>
to see it.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:29</time>
So they're the second oldest demonstration squadron in the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:33</time>
world behind one in France.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:36</time>
So they started flying in 1946.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:38</time>
And in France, it was a couple years earlier.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:41</time>
So they have been around since 1946.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:29:43</time>
I just,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:44</time>
I, I never realized that cause you and I, we've seen the

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:46</time>
blue angels a ton of times, right?

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:48</time>
You in flight school, you know, me, you know, when I was in college,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:51</time>
they would practice, you know, over, over my school all the time.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:54</time>
Um, But it was just really neat.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:29:57</time>
And then obviously seeing the Blue Angels kind of cap off the whole

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:30:00</time>
air show was just fun because the kids had never seen it before.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:30:04</time>
And they really pull out all the stops.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:30:06</time>
They do all the high speed passes and they're playing the music and they've

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:30:10</time>
got, you know, it's very choreographed.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:30:13</time>
It's very choreographed.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:30:14</time>
Um, It was

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:15</time>
neat.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:16</time>
So there's six aircraft total.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:18</time>
There's four that'll stay in the diamond formation, and they

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:20</time>
pretty much do formation flight.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:23</time>
And then there's two solo, there's a, a lead solo and a secondary Solo.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:26</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:27</time>
Five, no, five and six.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:27</time>
Five and six.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:28</time>
And they do a lot of the, the passes, the high speed passes, and they will

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:32</time>
form up with the, the diamond formation and do like a six, a man formation.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:37</time>
But, uh, most of the time they're doing all the, the crazy flying and, uh, it's,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:42</time>
uh, six Navy personnel, one Marine.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:44</time>
Uh, for the Blue Angels.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:46</time>
And so they kind of, uh, they, one Marine will always be flying as

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:50</time>
part of the demonstration crew.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:52</time>
Um, and the Thunderbirds are kind of like the Air Force equivalent.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:30:55</time>
They've been around since 1953 and I, I had seen them as a young kid.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:01</time>
But if you ever go to an air show, you know, we recommend get there early.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:06</time>
Because it gets very crowded and busy and if you have an opportunity like this

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:11</time>
air show sold tickets where you could get seating that was closer where you

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:16</time>
didn't have to bring your chair because you The air shows are usually free and

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:19</time>
you can bring your chair So you could go to an air show completely for free

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:22</time>
and just enjoy the day or even if you live close to where they're performing,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:26</time>
you could probably watch it from your

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:27</time>
house.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:27</time>
And you didn't have to have a military ID to get on base.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:30</time>
They actually opened it up to the public, which I didn't realize.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:32</time>
Um, you know, the only thing was that they were basically just kind of checking

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:31:36</time>
bags and stuff just before you got on the

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:37</time>
flight line.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:38</time>
Yeah, so it was great.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:39</time>
But if you didn't want to carry your chair and you could pay for tickets like we did

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:42</time>
on the flight line, and if you wanted to pay a little bit more, you get bleachers.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:46</time>
And if you wanted to pay like a little bit more, you could pay for preferred parking,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:50</time>
or else you're going to walk like we did.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:52</time>
Be prepared to walk at an air show anyway because you're going to be

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:56</time>
walking the basically the tarmac.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:31:58</time>
You're walking the flight line and to the different booths, to the different

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:03</time>
food, to the different static aircraft, and then over to the demonstration area.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:08</time>
It's, it was, it's a significant walk.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:11</time>
So I would just be prepared.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:12</time>
If you're going to go to an air show, be prepared to

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:14</time>
be there all day.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:15</time>
Yeah, but it, it, it really was fun.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:18</time>
We spent the whole day there and some of that history of, of aviation.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:22</time>
I just never knew until we got there and really until we kind of started

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:26</time>
talking about it tonight here on the talk with history podcast.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:29</time>
So if you guys have ever been to.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:32</time>
An air show.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:33</time>
I would love to hear about it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:35</time>
Shoot us an email.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:36</time>
Um, you can find us our, our email over at talkwithhistory.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:39</time>
com.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:40</time>
Um, reach out to us, let us know if you ever have had kind of an air show

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:43</time>
experience, because if there's one thing that I've learned about pilots

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:48</time>
or people that are fan of aviation is they love to talk about aviation.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:32:52</time>
and their aviation stories, just like my co host here did

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:56</time>
tonight.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:56</time>
Yes, and I apologize.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:32:58</time>
We actually had someone on Instagram say, I didn't even know you were a pilot,

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:01</time>
and I find that really hard to believe.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:04</time>
Now you're

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:04</time>
just going to send them this podcast episode every

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:06</time>
single time.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:07</time>
I just wanted to say one more time before we leave that the Blue

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:10</time>
Angels perform, um, annually for about 15 million spectators a year.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:16</time>
The Thunderbirds perform for about 12 million spectators a year.

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:20</time>
So If you can imagine all those people going to see, uh, these jets perform, I'm

<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:33:27</time>
sure someone has a good story out there.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:28</time>
Yeah, we would love to hear it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:30</time>
And if you can kind of write us a little email or send us a little note,

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:33</time>
um, or even if you look in the show notes, there's actually a way, there's

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:37</time>
a link in there, it's pod inbox.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:39</time>
Um, dot com slash history.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:41</time>
Yeah.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:41</time>
You can actually leave us an audio kind of message.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:43</time>
And I think if you keep it under 30 seconds, we might be able to play it.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:46</time>
So if anybody's listening and you're interested in telling

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:49</time>
us a story and maybe we can, we can get it on here, the podcast.

<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:33:52</time>
