<p>now unless you've been living under a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:18</time>
<p>rock since 2015 you will likely know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:21</time>
<p>some of the songs from the Broadway</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:22</time>
<p>musical Hamilton I know Jen does</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:26</time>
<p>but did you know that you don't have to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:29</time>
<p>pay a ton of money for a Broadway ticket</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:31</time>
<p>to see what Hamilton saw</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:33</time>
<p>or to walk in Hamilton's footsteps so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:37</time>
<p>Jen what are we talking about today</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:38</time>
<p>we're going to talk about the Battle of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:40</time>
<p>Yorktown the Battle of Yorktown so why</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:43</time>
<p>are we talking about the Battle of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:44</time>
<p>Yorktown today because we actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:45</time>
<p>visited the battle site in Yorktown</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:47</time>
<p>Virginia yep so we're going to talk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:49</time>
<p>about what that's like to go there and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:52</time>
<p>what you can see and some of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:54</time>
<p>similarities between the Hamilton song</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:57</time>
<p>and what's actually there for you to see</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:59</time>
<p>yeah so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:01</time>
<p>um yeah it's easy for us to get to so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:03</time>
<p>where is the Yorktown Battlefield so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:05</time>
<p>Yorktown Battlefield is in the city of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:07</time>
<p>York it's one of those early colonial</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:09</time>
<p>cities</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:10</time>
<p>um it the city was called York first and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:13</time>
<p>it was named after York</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:15</time>
<p>England yeah and and today it's in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:18</time>
<p>between like Norfolk and DC yes and it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:20</time>
<p>was settled in 1691 so it's one of those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:23</time>
<p>Old Colonial towns but it's in that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:25</time>
<p>historic triangle that we talked about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:27</time>
<p>in the Williamsburg um podcast so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:30</time>
<p>there's a neat little triangle of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:34</time>
<p>History here in this southern western</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:36</time>
<p>part Southern eastern part of Virginia</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:38</time>
<p>with Williamsburg Yorktown and Jamestown</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:43</time>
<p>all within about 20 miles of each other</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:45</time>
<p>and they all form like a triangle right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:47</time>
<p>yeah we've spent most of our time in one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:49</time>
<p>corner of that you know that triangle</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:51</time>
<p>but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:53</time>
<p>um going to Yorktown</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:55</time>
<p>it was actually more of an experience</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:57</time>
<p>than I than I realized because it's it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:59</time>
<p>covers a lot of land it's really neat</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:02</time>
<p>and I think people should see it because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:04</time>
<p>it does do like a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:08</time>
<p>seven mile</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:09</time>
<p>45 minute</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:11</time>
<p>kind of Battlefield drive that you can</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:14</time>
<p>do and you can get the map at the um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:19</time>
<p>at the National Park Service yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:21</time>
<p>Visitor Center but it's free to do the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:24</time>
<p>drive and if you get the chart it'll</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:26</time>
<p>explain everything to you plus there's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:27</time>
<p>signs everywhere you stop yeah and you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:30</time>
<p>can't really walk in between these sides</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:31</time>
<p>this is it's absolutely driving you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:33</time>
<p>might be able to bike it if you got if</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:36</time>
<p>you if and if you're bringing family</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:37</time>
<p>like this would be a bigger kid biking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:39</time>
<p>thing but honestly it's most likely it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:41</time>
<p>a driving it's a driving tour and they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:43</time>
<p>have like a red route and a yellow route</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:45</time>
<p>right and the red route is like the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:48</time>
<p>British side and the yellow route is the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:50</time>
<p>American Revolutionary and then they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:52</time>
<p>also have some French</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:54</time>
<p>so the French were with the Americans</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:55</time>
<p>okay all right yeah I had to educate</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:58</time>
<p>Scott as we you do even after I make it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:01</time>
<p>even even after I make the video</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:04</time>
<p>um I just I thought they had some</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:06</time>
<p>separate French routes too so on the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:09</time>
<p>yellow side when you go drive out you'll</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:13</time>
<p>you'll hit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:14</time>
<p>um lafayette's Campground you'll hit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:16</time>
<p>rochambeau's Campground then you'll hit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:18</time>
<p>George Washington that's yeah that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:20</time>
<p>probably so that's what you remember is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:22</time>
<p>they camped separately because they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:24</time>
<p>can't they can't put their troops right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:25</time>
<p>and George Washington was the furthest</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:27</time>
<p>out and he's the farthest out because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:29</time>
<p>he's the most protected yep right so and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:32</time>
<p>so that's where we close the video yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:34</time>
<p>because I'm so excited to walk in George</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:36</time>
<p>Washington's footsteps and to be where</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:39</time>
<p>there's a tent that's in the visitor</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:43</time>
<p>center that's George Washington's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:45</time>
<p>campaign tend and that tenth more than</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:48</time>
<p>likely was at that spot yeah where we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:50</time>
<p>were walking or walking around is that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:52</time>
<p>where the surrender or near the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:55</time>
<p>discerner battlefield or was that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:56</time>
<p>somewhere else no the surrender battle</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:57</time>
<p>about midway between both of those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:59</time>
<p>routes it's not it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:01</time>
<p>interesting it's not specifically on the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:03</time>
<p>yellow route it's not specifically on</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:04</time>
<p>the red route it's kind of where they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:06</time>
<p>both converge yeah yeah and that's the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:08</time>
<p>surrender field yeah that was that was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:10</time>
<p>that to me that was really cool but I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:12</time>
<p>think we're kind of jumping ahead so so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:13</time>
<p>set the stage for okay for you for the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:16</time>
<p>battle here</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:17</time>
<p>[Music]</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:21</time>
<p>York the city is on a it's in Eastern</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:26</time>
<p>Virginia it's on a river it's on York</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:28</time>
<p>River it's called Yorktown at about the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:32</time>
<p>1781 it becomes the epicenter of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:36</time>
<p>Battle of Yorktown so leading up to that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:40</time>
<p>it you know the U.S had been at war with</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:43</time>
<p>England for about six years by the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:45</time>
<p>summer of 1781. and then when they you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:48</time>
<p>get into Hamilton they're like the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:49</time>
<p>Battle of Yorktown 1781 you're like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:51</time>
<p>we've been the America's been fighting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:53</time>
<p>for six years now</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:56</time>
<p>um we the first shots are fired in 1775</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:59</time>
<p>at Congo Lexington and Concord and then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:02</time>
<p>you have these hard winters of 1777 1778</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:05</time>
<p>1779 1780 we did Washington Crossing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:08</time>
<p>yeah so these hard Winters that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:10</time>
<p>Washington is enduring there's no real</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:12</time>
<p>they have a few decisive victories but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:15</time>
<p>nothing that's really over you know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:17</time>
<p>that's winning the battle right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:20</time>
<p>so what happens in 1780 is the French</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:23</time>
<p>send over 5 000 troops and the French</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:27</time>
<p>are helping America because they're at</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:29</time>
<p>war with yeah I mean if correct me if my</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:32</time>
<p>high school history memory is wrong but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:34</time>
<p>the French helped us a lot I mean we win</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:37</time>
<p>because of the friends right and then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:39</time>
<p>they're going to have a revolution yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:40</time>
<p>right after and we're just gonna hang</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:42</time>
<p>out and we're just gonna watch them kill</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:43</time>
<p>their monarchy yeah but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:47</time>
<p>but so the French come in 1780 and they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:51</time>
<p>bring roshambo so Roshan Beau is a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:54</time>
<p>general a French General and he's very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:56</time>
<p>like like Lafayette he's very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:59</time>
<p>um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:00</time>
<p>professional good at his job just like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:02</time>
<p>Washington so Washington goes to meet</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:03</time>
<p>him he goes up to Rhode Island to meet</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:04</time>
<p>him in 1781 and they make this plan and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:07</time>
<p>they decide to attack Cornwallis and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:10</time>
<p>surprise him George Washington loves</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:12</time>
<p>this surprise attack right then you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:14</time>
<p>think of Washington Crossing he loves</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:16</time>
<p>this idea of a decisive victory in one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:20</time>
<p>location he's he's very single</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:24</time>
<p>Battlefield focused he's always been</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:26</time>
<p>that way which is traditional of the of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:29</time>
<p>the era and for George Washington if you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:31</time>
<p>study George Washington he is a very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:33</time>
<p>single battle focused oh really and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:36</time>
<p>he him and um Rochambeau traveled down</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:40</time>
<p>to Williamsburg in September of 1781 and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:45</time>
<p>so that's when I spoke with Lafayette in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:47</time>
<p>Williamsburg where did you guys stay</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:49</time>
<p>yeah on last week's podcast yes so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:51</time>
<p>Washington stays at like the with house</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:53</time>
<p>yeah right and they plan their strategy</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:57</time>
<p>because like I said they're in close</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:59</time>
<p>proximity to each other her right and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:02</time>
<p>in September of 17 September 28th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:04</time>
<p>actually of 1781 Washington would throw</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:07</time>
<p>some Rochambeau and Lafayette will</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:08</time>
<p>travel to York and attack Cornwallis and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:12</time>
<p>this takes about three weeks the whole</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:13</time>
<p>battle is from September 28 1781 and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:16</time>
<p>they finally will surrender on October</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:20</time>
<p>17th yeah and then the whole surrender</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:24</time>
<p>ceremony happens October 19th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:27</time>
<p>of 1781. yeah so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:31</time>
<p>this is when right before this happens</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:34</time>
<p>in the beginning of September the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:37</time>
<p>British sent some ships down to try to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:41</time>
<p>reinforce York the kind of hearing that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:44</time>
<p>these French ships are coming and the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:47</time>
<p>French just annihilate them yeah and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:49</time>
<p>that's one of their if you go to the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:51</time>
<p>visitor center</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:52</time>
<p>they have a recreation of the HMS Sharon</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:54</time>
<p>and the kids loved it and you can walk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:56</time>
<p>through it yeah that's right that was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:58</time>
<p>that was really neat it's really neat so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:59</time>
<p>that's a recreation of a British frigate</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:02</time>
<p>44 gun British frigate that the French</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:05</time>
<p>sunk right there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:07</time>
<p>in the York River yeah it's still there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:09</time>
<p>and I think that's the one thing that I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:12</time>
<p>remember from my high school about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:13</time>
<p>Yorktown and all that stuff like that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:16</time>
<p>that and then obviously the battlefield</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:18</time>
<p>but the French holding them off there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:20</time>
<p>yes was like the decisive thing that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:23</time>
<p>that kind of turned the tide and and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:25</time>
<p>tipped the scales in our favor well</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:26</time>
<p>that's what happens is the British can't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:27</time>
<p>get in to reinforce Cornwallis they go</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:30</time>
<p>back up to New York and cord Wallace is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:32</time>
<p>kind of like okay</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:34</time>
<p>um I'll give it my best shot but then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:37</time>
<p>George Washington is very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:39</time>
<p>this is strategic yeah and what he does</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:41</time>
<p>and we'll talk about it but um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:42</time>
<p>Cornwallis just gives up basically so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:46</time>
<p>when they get there they start basically</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:49</time>
<p>Cornwallis is dug in to Yorktown and if</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:52</time>
<p>you go to Yorktown you will see these</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:53</time>
<p>Earthworks that that was really yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:56</time>
<p>they still exist today that was really</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:58</time>
<p>it was like so again just kind of from</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:02</time>
<p>from someone who wasn't particularly</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:04</time>
<p>interested in this right growing up and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:05</time>
<p>even in college like again I'm not</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:08</time>
<p>history is not my my area of particular</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:11</time>
<p>interest I love doing this with you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:13</time>
<p>but when I'm there it was one of those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:16</time>
<p>interesting things like I probably never</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:17</time>
<p>would have gone maybe I would have gone</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:19</time>
<p>you know by myself but you you bring me</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:21</time>
<p>out there you bring the kids up we bring</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:22</time>
<p>the kids out there and being there and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:24</time>
<p>like literally walking around the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:26</time>
<p>battlefield I love how</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:29</time>
<p>at the Yorktown Battlefield they they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:31</time>
<p>actually don't develop a lot of it they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:33</time>
<p>let a lot of it kind of stay open and it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:35</time>
<p>really gives you the feel of what it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:39</time>
<p>must have looked like and felt like back</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:41</time>
<p>then it doesn't feel overly developed</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:43</time>
<p>like some big Park like some you know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:46</time>
<p>whether it's the Jamestown Settlement</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:47</time>
<p>Recreation which we'll talk about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:49</time>
<p>another time and it it felt like you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:52</time>
<p>walking around like oh my gosh like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:55</time>
<p>here's these readouts that they dug or</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:58</time>
<p>here's these Earthworks that they dug</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:59</time>
<p>and they dug this notch in this hill</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:01</time>
<p>here just so the Canaan could shoot over</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:03</time>
<p>there yeah those trenches the trenches</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:05</time>
<p>and like that was so cool I mean and for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:09</time>
<p>kids they're just running they're having</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:11</time>
<p>a blast they're running they're running</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:12</time>
<p>everywhere it that to me was probably</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:15</time>
<p>the coolest piece of it again I like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:17</time>
<p>kind of like the experience</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:20</time>
<p>it was so cool so they dug in these huge</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:24</time>
<p>trenches that's what they did the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:25</time>
<p>British had reinforced Yorktown dug in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:28</time>
<p>these huge trenches is to kind of guard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:30</time>
<p>them made these readouts to kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:33</time>
<p>they're kind of like a readout is kind</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:35</time>
<p>of like a little</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:36</time>
<p>um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:37</time>
<p>fourth yeah I would say like you know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:39</time>
<p>when you put all the earthwork around</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:41</time>
<p>you and you can have it and they'd have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:42</time>
<p>like the sharp the sharp logs that they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:44</time>
<p>sharpened sticking out yep the sharp</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:46</time>
<p>lugs will be all around and the parapets</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:48</time>
<p>where they can put cannons up on top and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:51</time>
<p>what George Washington did with his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:54</time>
<p>troops as he gets in and starts digging</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:56</time>
<p>in close to those yeah so he can get his</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:58</time>
<p>cannons in so what you see is you'll see</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:01</time>
<p>The Siege lines you'll see the first</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:03</time>
<p>Siege line the second Siege line and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:06</time>
<p>you'll see the British Siege line and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:07</time>
<p>those haven't changed they've grown over</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:09</time>
<p>with grass now but their earthwork</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:11</time>
<p>hasn't changed so you can walk on them</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:13</time>
<p>and walk inside there it was it was so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:15</time>
<p>cool because you can walk down and they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:17</time>
<p>are probably good if you're down inside</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:20</time>
<p>of a readout yeah yeah it's probably a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:22</time>
<p>good six seven feet yeah if you see the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:24</time>
<p>video my opening is from readout nine</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:27</time>
<p>yeah so I'm standing in the there's two</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:30</time>
<p>readouts that were instrumental in The</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:32</time>
<p>Taking of Yorktown nine and ten ten is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:34</time>
<p>the one Alexander Hamilton took nine is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:36</time>
<p>one as the French took his ten the one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:38</time>
<p>he sung about yeah ten or 20 seconds</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:40</time>
<p>but nine is when you can go in today and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:43</time>
<p>stand in because it's more Inland 10 is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:47</time>
<p>on the water and it's been slowly</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:50</time>
<p>um deteriorating yeah but um nine is is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:54</time>
<p>more Inland so we were able to stand</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:56</time>
<p>inside of it and I talked about can you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:57</time>
<p>imagine 400 people in here that night</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:01</time>
<p>and because that's how many people were</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:02</time>
<p>inside there yeah and it was again to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:05</time>
<p>kind of tutor our own horn you know on</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:07</time>
<p>some of the production value we have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:09</time>
<p>like these little wireless mic you know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:11</time>
<p>receivers so I actually stood at the top</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:12</time>
<p>of the readout and you were standing in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:14</time>
<p>the bottom and as you walk towards me it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:16</time>
<p>helps it helps in the video give you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:18</time>
<p>perspective because sometimes it's hard</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:20</time>
<p>to see from a straight video shot not</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:22</time>
<p>the perspective of how deep these things</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:24</time>
<p>are how big they are but when you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:26</time>
<p>walking when I'm beating you you walking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:28</time>
<p>through it and the audio is very clear</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:30</time>
<p>you're talking about it as you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:31</time>
<p>walking towards the camera that was that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:34</time>
<p>was a fun thing for me to do just from</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:35</time>
<p>the production side and they're very so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:37</time>
<p>you can park close to them and then walk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:39</time>
<p>out to them but they are accessible if</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:43</time>
<p>you have even a wheelchair I think they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:45</time>
<p>would yeah yeah I think a good portion</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:47</time>
<p>of them are not all of them but that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:49</time>
<p>those readouts are really close to the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:51</time>
<p>visitor center so like I said if you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:52</time>
<p>start at The Visitor Center you'll go in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:54</time>
<p>they have a recreation of the ship they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:56</time>
<p>also have George Washington's campaign</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:58</time>
<p>tent</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:59</time>
<p>it's protected it's you know so for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:03</time>
<p>conservative but you can walk inside</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:05</time>
<p>underneath it in glass and it kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:08</time>
<p>lets you know how tall George Washington</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:09</time>
<p>was because that for them they have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:11</time>
<p>markers that's right yes by the time</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:13</time>
<p>he's a tall man he was six six three</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:16</time>
<p>yeah when the average man around then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:18</time>
<p>it's about five nine so he's pretty tall</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:20</time>
<p>for the time and they all also have</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:22</time>
<p>Cornwallis campaign table what they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:24</time>
<p>believe is Quinn Wallace's campaign</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:26</time>
<p>table and I talk about why they would</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:28</time>
<p>say that usually they don't have exact</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:30</time>
<p>prominence but it's it points to it but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:33</time>
<p>that's also protected and you can see</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:35</time>
<p>that's probably the table he used for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:38</time>
<p>his strategy and planning and so those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:40</time>
<p>are the three really cool things in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:42</time>
<p>visitor center and then of course you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:44</time>
<p>can get your</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:45</time>
<p>map to start your drive</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:48</time>
<p>but um you know there's there's about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:51</time>
<p>17</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:52</time>
<p>000</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:53</time>
<p>troops for the American Revolution you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:55</time>
<p>got about nine eight to nine thousand</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:57</time>
<p>Americans and the French have brought</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:59</time>
<p>about seven to eight thousand and then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:01</time>
<p>Cornwallis has about nine thousand with</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:04</time>
<p>him he's about seven thousand British</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:05</time>
<p>and three thousand Germans yeah so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:08</time>
<p>remember we talked about this by the the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:10</time>
<p>Hessians yeah and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:12</time>
<p>[Music]</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:16</time>
<p>they start to dig in this starts in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:19</time>
<p>September and so the song is about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:22</time>
<p>September about October 14th and October</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:25</time>
<p>14th is when Hamilton and a French</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:30</time>
<p>officer are given the orders to take</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:33</time>
<p>these readouts right and the French</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:35</time>
<p>officers told to take nine which is the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:38</time>
<p>Inland one and ten and Hamilton's told</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:40</time>
<p>to take ten which is on the water now in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:42</time>
<p>the play is this where because he's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:44</time>
<p>always asking for his own command like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:47</time>
<p>he keeps asking for command he wants</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:48</time>
<p>this is his name is this his chance this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:50</time>
<p>is his chance this is his one chance</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:52</time>
<p>well like talk about like perfect timing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:54</time>
<p>you know right here's your chance it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:56</time>
<p>the last battle right obviously they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:57</time>
<p>didn't know that they didn't know that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:59</time>
<p>but like hey here's your last chance of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:01</time>
<p>like Hamilton's like oh it's my one time</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:02</time>
<p>and he does it and then the battle lens</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:04</time>
<p>he's like yep yeah I know and honestly</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:07</time>
<p>so the the whole part is like take the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:09</time>
<p>bullet such a gun take the bullet touch</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:11</time>
<p>again we move into current we move as</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:12</time>
<p>when George Washington had given the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:14</time>
<p>orders to just use your bayonets right</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:16</time>
<p>to keep it silent to keep it silent he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:18</time>
<p>didn't want to tip them off because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:20</time>
<p>Cornwallis doesn't think they're that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:22</time>
<p>close right he doesn't have any intel to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
<p>let them know that they're that close</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:25</time>
<p>and so they take these readouts by</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:27</time>
<p>surprise and because they take them by</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:30</time>
<p>surprise there's really very low</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:32</time>
<p>casualty numbers</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:33</time>
<p>I think um Hamilton loses eight and the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:37</time>
<p>French officer loses 20. but when you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:40</time>
<p>fighting 400 men that's a pretty big</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:42</time>
<p>deal</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:43</time>
<p>um</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:44</time>
<p>for the French side the Jersey so the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:47</time>
<p>French attack the Germans that's who's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:49</time>
<p>inside their readout And when they see</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:51</time>
<p>the French coming they fire back a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:53</time>
<p>little and then they go okay we give up</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
<p>they're like we don't they're like we're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:56</time>
<p>not really invested in this they're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:58</time>
<p>really our country yeah so that's why</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:00</time>
<p>you know it's kind of like Hamilton did</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:03</time>
<p>it but it's like okay there you go you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:05</time>
<p>know but if you go there and we have we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:08</time>
<p>have gone there you know for friends for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:10</time>
<p>Flat Stanley there's a whole thing that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:13</time>
<p>says Alexander Hamilton stood here you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:16</time>
<p>can stand where Alexander Hamilton stood</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:18</time>
<p>and I'm sure that didn't come around</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:20</time>
<p>until 2050. I know and after the play</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:22</time>
<p>came out um John Laurens who's also a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:24</time>
<p>character in the Hamilton play John</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:26</time>
<p>Lawrence is with Hamilton when he makes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:29</time>
<p>this Siege a readout 10.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:31</time>
<p>um so he's also there so that's kind of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:34</time>
<p>that that is accurate of the song</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:38</time>
<p>um and then he talks about you know a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:42</time>
<p>young man stands on a parapet waving a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:45</time>
<p>white handkerchief that does happen so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:47</time>
<p>they take these readouts October 14th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:49</time>
<p>they fill them with cannons they start</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:51</time>
<p>firing onto your Cornwallis just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:54</time>
<p>basically holds out as long as he can</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:56</time>
<p>and on the 17th he surrenders and he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:58</time>
<p>does have a drummer and a British</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:01</time>
<p>officer climb on a pet a pet and wave a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:04</time>
<p>white handkerchief just like in the song</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:05</time>
<p>oh wow and then on the 18th they the day</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:09</time>
<p>after is when the four officers meet at</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:11</time>
<p>Morehouse so that's another place you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:13</time>
<p>can go remember we went to Morehouse we</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:15</time>
<p>walk around it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:16</time>
<p>and vaguely that's what the negotiation</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:18</time>
<p>of surrender takes place and that's one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:20</time>
<p>of them yes remember one American office</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:22</time>
<p>it was like an actual house that's an</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:24</time>
<p>actual house one French officer two</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:26</time>
<p>British officers and they meet in there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:28</time>
<p>and they basically at the time you had</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:30</time>
<p>to come on terms of surrender what are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:33</time>
<p>what are your terms and George</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:35</time>
<p>Washington you know you can't unfail</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:37</time>
<p>your colors you can't walk away with</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:39</time>
<p>your banner flying high you can't walk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:42</time>
<p>away with any bullets in your gun yeah I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:43</time>
<p>think I think that they had like threw</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:44</time>
<p>it on their arms yeah you have to do</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:46</time>
<p>these kind of symbolic things</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:48</time>
<p>um your highest in command has to give</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:50</time>
<p>the sword to me well what happens the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:53</time>
<p>day of surrender which is October 18th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:55</time>
<p>at the surrender field which is awesome</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:58</time>
<p>yeah it was cool they've got like a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:00</time>
<p>whole audio thing that you can like go</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:02</time>
<p>in there you're looking over yeah it's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:03</time>
<p>like you so you walk down from the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:05</time>
<p>parking lot it's probably what maybe 100</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:07</time>
<p>yards maybe right so you walk down this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
<p>path to this kind of little</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:12</time>
<p>larger stage gazebo covered thing but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:14</time>
<p>then they've got audio playing and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:16</time>
<p>it's telling you and they're playing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:17</time>
<p>like the the drums and the trumpets and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:20</time>
<p>you know they're so it sounds like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:21</time>
<p>you're there and then you're looking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:22</time>
<p>over where they surrender yeah like what</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:24</time>
<p>would you see that day looking out on</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:26</time>
<p>the field what would you see you will</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:28</time>
<p>see a line of American officers you will</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:31</time>
<p>see a line of British officers and then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:33</time>
<p>you will see the French having to walk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:35</time>
<p>side by side between them yeah and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:37</time>
<p>they've got the old kind of beams like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:39</time>
<p>the cross beams right that would line</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:41</time>
<p>kind of almost like fences yes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:44</time>
<p>um so Cornwallis that day says he's sick</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:47</time>
<p>and he doesn't show up yeah I'd be sick</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:49</time>
<p>too and because of that his second in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:52</time>
<p>command presents the sword to George</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:53</time>
<p>Washington but George Washington won't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:55</time>
<p>accept it he makes his second in command</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:58</time>
<p>take it oh wow so very symbolic this all</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:01</time>
<p>of this is like you know men of the time</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:04</time>
<p>being sure it's it's a different era</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:07</time>
<p>Yeah a different era but it you know</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:08</time>
<p>it's very neat to be there uh the war</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:11</time>
<p>will this so this is the decisive battle</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:13</time>
<p>right there won't be another</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:15</time>
<p>big battle although the war technically</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:18</time>
<p>is not over until another two years</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:20</time>
<p>September 3rd 1783 is when the Treaty of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:23</time>
<p>Paris is actually signed yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:25</time>
<p>at this time British Parliament has</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:27</time>
<p>backed down Armament so they they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:29</time>
<p>basically won't attack anymore and so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:33</time>
<p>these two years are basically just</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:34</time>
<p>little skirmishes but nothing big until</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:36</time>
<p>the war is over and there was a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:40</time>
<p>centennial in 1881</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:43</time>
<p>and Chester Garfield spoke because he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:46</time>
<p>had been president for 30 days because I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:48</time>
<p>mean Chester Arthur spoke because he had</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:50</time>
<p>been president for 30 days because James</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:51</time>
<p>Garfield had just died oh yeah and then</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:54</time>
<p>there was a bicentennial in 1981 when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:56</time>
<p>Ronald Reagan spoke that's cool yeah</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:58</time>
<p>yeah and again</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:01</time>
<p>if you're ever in the area and you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:02</time>
<p>doing the Williams work thing because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:04</time>
<p>that's the big draw right I'd say for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:06</time>
<p>the area right that's that's uh</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:09</time>
<p>the the first first one that everybody's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:12</time>
<p>going to go to if you get a chance</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:13</time>
<p>though</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:14</time>
<p>I go to go to Yorktown Battlefield</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:17</time>
<p>because one if you kind of just want a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:19</time>
<p>day where you can drive do a little bit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:20</time>
<p>more driving a little bit less walking</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:21</time>
<p>right maybe do Williams work first walk</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:24</time>
<p>around all day get your feet all nice</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:26</time>
<p>and tired then go drive out to Yorktown</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:27</time>
<p>and just driving around there was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:29</time>
<p>amazing because we ended up going back</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:31</time>
<p>later</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:32</time>
<p>and this lighting was just beautiful so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:34</time>
<p>we went around Sunset and it was the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:36</time>
<p>most Serene and beautiful it was like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:39</time>
<p>think of any movie that you've ever seen</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:41</time>
<p>about you know Revolutionary War era I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:45</time>
<p>mean it was just those the purples and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:48</time>
<p>reds and oranges and it was like I felt</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:51</time>
<p>like I was I was in that time it was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:54</time>
<p>absolutely amazing and like we said this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:57</time>
<p>battlefield has been relatively</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:59</time>
<p>untouched yeah so you do feel like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:02</time>
<p>you're standing in history when you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:04</time>
<p>there it was just that was one of those</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:08</time>
<p>things</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:09</time>
<p>you know aside from being in my Colonial</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:11</time>
<p>Williamsburg and even Colonial</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:12</time>
<p>Williamsburg you feel like you're there</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:14</time>
<p>but there's a bunch of other there's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:15</time>
<p>people walking around with strollers and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:16</time>
<p>stuff like that right here I really felt</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:20</time>
<p>like I was transported back in time it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:22:22</time>
