<p>And they start to fall back and it's Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:02</time>
<p>exposes himself, stands up on that Boulder, grabs the writing crop,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:06</time>
<p>and says, don't give him an inch.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:08</time>
<p>Boys don't give him an inch</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:21</time>

<time>00:00:49</time>

<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:52</time>
<p>tonight on Talk With History?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:54</time>
<p>We are going to talk about who I consider the unsung hero of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:00:59</time>
<p>Gettysburg and that is Strong</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:01</time>
<p>Vincent, so, so strong, Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:04</time>
<p>Now this was actually, and you were just reminding me before we started mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:08</time>
<p>that this was like, like our act real first.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:12</time>
<p>. It's technically our second video, but it's our first real video</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:14</time>
<p>that we did just for the channel.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:16</time>
<p>It's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:16</time>
<p>our first real video for the channel.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:17</time>
<p>So if you wa watch our YouTube channel Walk With History, our first</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:21</time>
<p>video is Nathan Bedford Forest.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:23</time>
<p>Right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:24</time>
<p>Because we were in Memphis and the statue was there at the time, and I wanted to.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:29</time>
<p>Inform people who he was and educate people.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:31</time>
<p>So we repurposed that video.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:34</time>
<p>This is our first video that we actually went to locations and filmed</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:38</time>
<p>and told you the story, and it's because we lived in Erie, Pennsylvania</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:42</time>
<p>and you had been working, you know, or doing kind of like an internship for your</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:46</time>
<p>graduate program at the Erie Maritime Museum and been learning about Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:50</time>
<p>A lot more history about the whole Erie</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:53</time>
<p>area.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:53</time>
<p>Well, what really did it was, I think you had a.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:01:58</time>
<p>Enlistment at the Erie Maritime Museum and we left and there was a statue</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:03</time>
<p>in front of the Erie Maritime Museum.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:04</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:05</time>
<p>And you had left.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:06</time>
<p>And I was like, who's the statue?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:07</time>
<p>I'm gonna look up Who's the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:09</time>
<p>guy?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:09</time>
<p>It's the statue of a guy.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:10</time>
<p>He's got like this hero, hero pose.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:12</time>
<p>He's kind of like one foot up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:13</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:13</time>
<p>Like almost on like you would see like some on the bow of a ship.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:16</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:16</time>
<p>But he's got this writing crop.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:18</time>
<p>What you kinda like, you know what jockeys have when they're, when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:20</time>
<p>they're racing their horses and then big like lamb.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:23</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:23</time>
<p>And definitely a soldier.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:25</time>
<p>He's wearing a, like a uniform and it said Brigadier General Strong, Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:33</time>
<p>And I was like, who is this guy?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:35</time>
<p>And it said, hero of Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:37</time>
<p>And I'm like, Erie, Pennsylvania has the statue to Strong Vincent here.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:42</time>
<p>You So I learned all about him and I was blown away.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:46</time>
<p>So a lot of people will, will hear Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:50</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:50</time>
<p>and they'll, they'll, they'll hear Hero of Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:52</time>
<p>So they'll think about Gettysburg, the movie.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:55</time>
<p>So Chamberlain, 1993</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:57</time>
<p>movie with Jeff Daniels.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:02:59</time>
<p>Jeff Daniels, which actually we just watched a little bit about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:01</time>
<p>him and his family history.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:02</time>
<p>But you, so we learn about this, but the more you started learning about Strong</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:06</time>
<p>Vincent who was from the Eerie area, the more you were just like, oh my gosh.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:11</time>
<p>He actually was involved at Gettysburg and so lead us up to Sure.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:16</time>
<p>How he got the statue.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:17</time>
<p>Who is, who is strong Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:18</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:18</time>
<p>And what a great.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:20</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:20</time>
<p>What a great name.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:21</time>
<p>Born in Waterford, Pennsylvania, 1837.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:25</time>
<p>And his father's last name is Vincent, but his mother's maiden name is Strong, so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:33</time>
<p>that's where he gets his first name from.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:34</time>
<p>So strong.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:35</time>
<p>Vincent is his mother's maiden name and then his father's last name, and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:38</time>
<p>he becomes a lawyer and he's a lawyer.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:42</time>
<p>In Erie, Pennsylvania, and we go to not only his birthplace,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:46</time>
<p>but we go to where he practiced law in Erie, and he graduates</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:50</time>
<p>from Harvard College in 1859, and then starts to practice a law.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:56</time>
<p>And then the war breaks out.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:57</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:03:57</time>
<p>And he feels very called to do his duty.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:00</time>
<p>So he joins the 83rd Pennsylvania, and he's in a couple battles.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:06</time>
<p>He's in the Battle of Chancellorville.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:07</time>
<p>He's in Fredericksburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:11</time>
<p>He really takes command at Gettysburg and he's, he gets to Gettysburg on</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:18</time>
<p>July 2nd, like as the battle is already going on, and he's commissioned</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:24</time>
<p>first as a lieutenant colonel.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:25</time>
<p>He makes Colonel in June of 1862, and then in May of 1863, he takes command.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:32</time>
<p>I wanted to get this right of the third BRI grade, first division,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:35</time>
<p>fifth core Army of the Potomac, and that includes the 20th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:40</time>
<p>Maine, which is, which is Chamberlain, which is very, very, very famous.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:44</time>
<p>Now, Rome, remind me, right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:46</time>
<p>As, as the non-story buff of, of the duo here.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:50</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:51</time>
<p>was it still kind of back then where because he was educated,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:55</time>
<p>he already came in as an officer?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:57</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:57</time>
<p>Yes, he came in.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:04:58</time>
<p>Okay, so because he was a lawyer, he was an establi, established</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:00</time>
<p>as a lieutenant colonel.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:01</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:01</time>
<p>. He came in as a lieutenant colonel.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:02</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:02</time>
<p>And then made colonel.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:03</time>
<p>Okay.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:04</time>
<p>So, so quick right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:05</time>
<p>Commission.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:06</time>
<p>Sure.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:06</time>
<p>Educated.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:07</time>
<p>Right, and and honestly that goes a long way cuz when we talk about what</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:11</time>
<p>he did that was so instrumental in which I believe gets a lot of credit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:17</time>
<p>that he doesn't get recognized for.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:19</time>
<p>I think it's because he sees a bigger picture.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:22</time>
<p>That was incredibly common back then.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:24</time>
<p>Well that's how Nathan</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:24</time>
<p>Bedford Forres did it too.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:25</time>
<p>We talk about him and you buy a commission cuz you have to pay for your commission</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:30</time>
<p>That's how it was done.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:31</time>
<p>. , you have to be educated and then you have to buy your commission.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:34</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:34</time>
<p>You know, so you have to kind of pay for your commission.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:36</time>
<p>You have to be a, a person of means.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:38</time>
<p>It's usually someone</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:39</time>
<p>educated.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:39</time>
<p>So, so he came in, educated, right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:40</time>
<p>Was mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:41</time>
<p>someone who was able to see the bigger picture.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:42</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:43</time>
<p>. Got all the way out to, to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:47</time>
<p>wanna kind of set the stage a little bit more before we start talking.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:49</time>
<p>You know, totally about Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:52</time>
<p>We are in Erie, Pennsylvania.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:53</time>
<p>If you picture Pennsylvania in your mind, , yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:55</time>
<p>Think about the top left corner.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:58</time>
<p>Not too far from Buffalo, New York.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:05:59</time>
<p>Think about all the snow up there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:01</time>
<p>That's where Erie, Pennsylvania</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:02</time>
<p>is.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:03</time>
<p>Yeah, it's, so basically Pennsylvania could have access to the lake.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:06</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:06</time>
<p>And Gettysburg's a lot closer to like the middle southern part of the state.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:10</time>
<p>It's, yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:11</time>
<p>In,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:11</time>
<p>in that direction.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:12</time>
<p>It's close to State College.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:13</time>
<p>I, I went to Penn State so it's a little bit to the, to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:17</time>
<p>the right and south of that.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:19</time>
<p>So a little bit farther To the corner.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:22</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:22</time>
<p>To the right southern corner, right in that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:24</time>
<p>area.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:25</time>
<p>They get to Gettysburg now, kind of run through.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:28</time>
<p>Kind of what happened there and what we did, what you did in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:31</time>
<p>the, the videos, cuz you did a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:32</time>
<p>couple videos.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:33</time>
<p>So if you wanna watch both videos on our channel, I do a video from Erie,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:37</time>
<p>which we follow his life from his birth to where he worked to the, and we'll</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:42</time>
<p>get to the story to end of his life.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:43</time>
<p>And then I, I do Gettysburg, so I do where he stood and what happened.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:49</time>
<p>So let's get into what happened.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:50</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:50</time>
<p>This is what I find so fascinating about Strong Vincent second day.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:54</time>
<p>He gets to the area where battle is taking place.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:06:58</time>
<p>And what has happened is Major General Sickles, who we've talked about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:02</time>
<p>before, , I, I want to learn so much more about, was it, is it Dan?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:08</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:08</time>
<p>Daniel Sickles it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:09</time>
<p>Daniel Sickles.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:11</time>
<p>. I wanna do something about Daniel Sickles because we did another podcast.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:14</time>
<p>We interviewed he's very colorful Civil, civil war, week by week.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:18</time>
<p>And he talked about Dan Sickles.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:19</time>
<p>Super interesting character.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:21</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:21</time>
<p>We'll do it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:22</time>
<p>They need to make a movie about this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:23</time>
<p>guy.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:23</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:24</time>
<p>So he's kind of, we'll move past this.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:26</time>
<p>He's a man of his own you know, demise, I will say.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:29</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:30</time>
<p>Because he deviated from his orders.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:33</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:33</time>
<p>And leaves a very instrumental location, unprotected.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:39</time>
<p>, it's called Little Round Top.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:40</time>
<p>And if you know anything about Gettysburg, it is a pinnacle point</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:44</time>
<p>in the battle of that second day.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:47</time>
<p>And it's where a lot of people go to visit because of the terrain.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:51</time>
<p>And you can see it ha, it's close to Devil's Den right now.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:55</time>
<p>It's closed for renovations at Gettysburg, but Sickles leaves little</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:07:59</time>
<p>round top exposed and the chief engineer of the army of the Potomac.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:05</time>
<p>Brigadier General Warren, who's the statue that's standing there on Little</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:09</time>
<p>Round Top is the one who recognized the tactical importance of this area.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:13</time>
<p>And so he's trying to find somebody to defend it and he's trying to give orders.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:19</time>
<p>And what happens is he has an aid.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:22</time>
<p>So Warren, you know, is giving orders and he has an aide</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:25</time>
<p>Vincent, without consulting his.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:28</time>
<p>Superior officers decides to take his brigade and go and defend</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:34</time>
<p>little round top and he says, I will take the responsibility and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:38</time>
<p>I will take my brigade there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:40</time>
<p>So he heard,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:41</time>
<p>he came across, or, or the, an aid.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:43</time>
<p>The aid came across, mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:45</time>
<p>, you know, strong Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:46</time>
<p>And he asked the aid, Hey, what are you trying to do?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:48</time>
<p>And he kind of told him, Hey, I'm trying to find somebody to go hold this position.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:51</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:52</time>
<p>And strong Vincent's, like, I got it covered.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:53</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:53</time>
<p>I'll take, I'll take my folks.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:55</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:55</time>
<p>Which includes Chamberlain and all the whole, all the famous stuff.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:58</time>
<p>So strong.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:08:59</time>
<p>Vincent was in charge.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:01</time>
<p>Of these units.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:02</time>
<p>Yeah, so he was in charge.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:03</time>
<p>I wrote them all down.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:06</time>
<p>20th Main, 44th, New York, a hundred and 40th, New York Infantry, 83rd</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:11</time>
<p>Pennsylvania, and the 16th Michigan.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:13</time>
<p>So 20th Main, you're gonna know Chamberlain.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:15</time>
<p>16th, Michigan will also be significant.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:17</time>
<p>So, The 20th main led by Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:23</time>
<p>He receives his fame because this is like the left side of the flank.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:27</time>
<p>This is the far left side of the battle, and the rebels are advancing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:34</time>
<p>and they see them at Devil's Den.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:38</time>
<p>And if you know anything about little round top to Devil's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:40</time>
<p>Den, that's not much space.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:41</time>
<p>So if he can see them advancing, he's trying to get his people in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:45</time>
<p>place right as they start to come up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:48</time>
<p>Vincent does.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:49</time>
<p>That's I think another strategic thing is he lines up his men kind of.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:54</time>
<p>At the spur of the ground.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:56</time>
<p>So rate where the ground starts to rise higher.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:09:59</time>
<p>He doesn't, he doesn't put them at the top.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:01</time>
<p>He puts 'em at the spur, which is strategically, we know good.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:05</time>
<p>Because if you fall back, you fall back to high ground.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:07</time>
<p>Right, right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:08</time>
<p>And so, such a smart thing to do because at one point when I talked about the 16th</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:13</time>
<p>of Michigan, they start to get hit a lot.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:17</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:17</time>
<p>And they start to fall back and it's Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:19</time>
<p>exposes himself, stands up on that Boulder, grabs the writing crop, which is</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:24</time>
<p>a gift from his wife who is pregnant at the time and says, don't give him an inch.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:29</time>
<p>Boys don't give him an inch.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:30</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:31</time>
<p>And inspires everyone to not fall back.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:36</time>
<p>But unfortunately Vincent sent is mortally wounded in that moment.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:38</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:38</time>
<p>And, and in the, the second video, so we talked about kind of our,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:42</time>
<p>our second video on the channel.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:45</time>
<p>Was really kind of our first real one, but 35 videos later.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:50</time>
<p>Yes, we, you get to, we make it to Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:52</time>
<p>It's so great.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:53</time>
<p>So we make it to Gettysburg and she actually walks through Devil's Den</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:10:56</time>
<p>and I'll link to that particular video in the description of this video.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:01</time>
<p>She walks through Devil's Den, she finds strong Vincent's statue.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:05</time>
<p>So there's three things.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:06</time>
<p>If you go to Getty, To honor strong Vincent, I will tell you right now, you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:11</time>
<p>can go into every gift shop and say, do you have anything for Joshua Chamberlain?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:15</time>
<p>And they're like, oh, we have this shirt, we have this mug, we have this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:18</time>
<p>key chain, we have this postcard.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:20</time>
<p>Do you have anything for strong Vincent?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:22</time>
<p>No, but we should.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:24</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:24</time>
<p>That's the response I got from everybody.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:26</time>
<p>So a lot of the folks there, they know of him and they know what he did.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:29</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:30</time>
<p>If you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:30</time>
<p>a, a historian of Gettysburg, you know, strong Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:33</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:33</time>
<p>But he's not revered like Chamberlain is.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:37</time>
<p>If you go to Gettysburg, there will be statues everywhere to Mark different.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:42</time>
<p>. Armies and infantries.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:44</time>
<p>And brigades.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:45</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:45</time>
<p>Where they stood, where they were and each one, some of them are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:50</time>
<p>really unique and beautiful.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:51</time>
<p>And the one for the 83rd, Pennsylvania is on that spur where he, where</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:11:57</time>
<p>Vincent was and put the 83rd.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:00</time>
<p>Now that statue is to.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:01</time>
<p>Commemorate all of the 83rd, but it looks like strong Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:05</time>
<p>It's made in his likeness.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:06</time>
<p>Right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:06</time>
<p>It doesn't say his name on it, but it has the lamb chops.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:09</time>
<p>It has the, the writing crop.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:11</time>
<p>The writing crop.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:12</time>
<p>It has the hat.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:13</time>
<p>It's, it's almost like the, the statue at Erie.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:16</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:18</time>
<p>But it's there at Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:19</time>
<p>Now there's another white marker, a little bit farther back, higher up</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:23</time>
<p>on the slope of little round top that says, this is where Vincent fell.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:29</time>
<p>It's like a cross and it's like a white marker you can't miss.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:32</time>
<p>It looks almost like a tombstone.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:34</time>
<p>. Then if you're close to the top of little round top, there's a boulder that you</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:41</time>
<p>can't see unless you know it's there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:43</time>
<p>That's like engraved.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:45</time>
<p>That's they, it cut into the stone and they did this in 1864.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:51</time>
<p>And it says, Colonel John Vincent fell here.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:54</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:55</time>
<p>So there's three things that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:56</time>
<p>you can find.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:12:57</time>
<p>And then he was, was it, is he posthumously promoted, or he was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:01</time>
<p>promoted just before he died?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:02</time>
<p>So to Brigadier</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:03</time>
<p>General, commander of the Army of the Potomac major General Mead recommends</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:07</time>
<p>Vincent for promotion to Briga General on the evening of July 2nd.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:10</time>
<p>So that same day after the battle, after he's injured, after he's taken</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:15</time>
<p>back to it's the, the Bush farm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:19</time>
<p>He recommends him for Brido General.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:20</time>
<p>And so then he's promoted on July 3rd, so Lincoln approves it That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:25</time>
<p>That next day.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:25</time>
<p>And he's promoted on July 3rd, and he's commissioned to Brigadier General.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:29</time>
<p>On his deathbed.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:31</time>
<p>There is conflicting testimony whether he knew, oh, okay.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:35</time>
<p>He received the commission.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:37</time>
<p>I think he knew because he dies five days later.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:40</time>
<p>I mean, he.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:42</time>
<p>Just, he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:43</time>
<p>got shot in the leg or like in the gro</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:45</time>
<p>through the groin.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:45</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:45</time>
<p>So hit that artery there and that artery there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:47</time>
<p>And so he's nursed and he's, he is lucid, he is coherent and he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:53</time>
<p>is talking until the very end.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:13:55</time>
<p>But he just, He lingers for those five days, it must have been just miserable.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:00</time>
<p>And then at the end when he's passing away, , he's muttering</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:03</time>
<p>the Lord's Prayer as he dies.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:05</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:05</time>
<p>It's so, so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:06</time>
<p>it, it was powerful.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:07</time>
<p>It was really neat to kind of almost go full circle.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:11</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:11</time>
<p>with strong Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:12</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:13</time>
<p>And.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:14</time>
<p>One of the things, if you guys follow Jen on Instagram or anywhere and Gettysburg</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:19</time>
<p>comes up, she will bring up Strong</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:21</time>
<p>Vincent's.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:21</time>
<p>I will.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:22</time>
<p>Because I don't think a lot of people know him or give him credit.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:25</time>
<p>And there are people who will acknowledge, oh yeah, he, he's important.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:28</time>
<p>I'm like, no, no, no, no.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:30</time>
<p>Without strong Vincent and I don't I really push this.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:35</time>
<p>An officer taking his agency upon himself to hold a line knowing that this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:40</time>
<p>is a strategic part that's important.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:43</time>
<p>We were both officers in the military.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:45</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:45</time>
<p>And.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:46</time>
<p>To, to make those determinations on your own.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:49</time>
<p>I mean, you're taught that and you're taught that there will be moments when</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:52</time>
<p>you're gonna have to decide, but you're also gonna have to defend that decision.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:55</time>
<p>And he does it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:57</time>
<p>He sees it, he knows it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:14:58</time>
<p>He, he sees the, the opening, he sees the vulnerability, he sees the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:02</time>
<p>confederates coming, and he has a brigade.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:05</time>
<p>And so he's like, I'm gonna put them all up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:08</time>
<p>It's like he gets everyone in position just as they come up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:11</time>
<p>And I don't think people realize they do this in the 1993 movie Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:15</time>
<p>And it's important that he does stress to Chamberlain.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:19</time>
<p>They show that scene, they show that scene.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:21</time>
<p>That's a real moment.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:22</time>
<p>He does stress to Chamberlain.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:24</time>
<p>You have got to hold the line.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:25</time>
<p>You are the far left flank of the army, of the Potomac.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:29</time>
<p>One of the other things that I think we should talk about is there's another</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:32</time>
<p>reason that you like that particular scene of Gettysburg is because the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:37</time>
<p>actor who plays strong Vincent Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:39</time>
<p>In Gettysburg is an actor that you like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:41</time>
<p>Maxwell Caulfield.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:43</time>
<p>He is in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:44</time>
<p>Grease two.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:46</time>
<p>Yeah, he's,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:46</time>
<p>he's, he's, he's one of the love interests.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:48</time>
<p>He's the guy.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:49</time>
<p>He's the guy.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:49</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:50</time>
<p>He, he's the,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:50</time>
<p>he's the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:50</time>
<p>main guy.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:51</time>
<p>He's the main guy from Grease two.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:52</time>
<p>So we, we make a joke about that I think in our first, yeah,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:55</time>
<p>we actually show him in every we song,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:57</time>
<p>we show the greasy and stuff like that.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:15:58</time>
<p>I kind, I kind of cringe when I watched some of our earlier videos.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:01</time>
<p>I know, yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:02</time>
<p>Because we were learning quite a, quite</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:03</time>
<p>a bit.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:04</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:04</time>
<p>Michael Carrington, so you might know Grease two.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:08</time>
<p>Michelle.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:09</time>
<p>That's run for early, early movies.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:10</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:11</time>
<p>But you don't see Maxwell Caulfield a lot.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:14</time>
<p>He does things here and there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:15</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:15</time>
<p>He's not like a, a big a list actor.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:18</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:19</time>
<p>But when I watched that scene, I'm like, oh my gosh, that's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:22</time>
<p>Maxwell Caulfield from Grease two.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
<p>So he plays strong Vincent in the movie, and they do have that moment.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:28</time>
<p>He's talking to Jeff Daniels and he, who's Joshua Chamberlain, and tells him,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:33</time>
<p>you know, you, you are the fall of flank.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:35</time>
<p>You've gotta defend.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:36</time>
<p>With your death.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:36</time>
<p>Basically, this is everything.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:38</time>
<p>And he says</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:42</time>
<p>, Because Chamberlain is a professor.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:43</time>
<p>Okay.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:44</time>
<p>It's not because not because Vincent is Vincent's a lawyer.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:47</time>
<p>But Chamberlain's a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:48</time>
<p>professor.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:49</time>
<p>Well, and you have to think about it too, right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:51</time>
<p>It's not like this is the first time he's ever two have met.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
<p>No.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:55</time>
<p>Because, and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:56</time>
<p>or fought.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:56</time>
<p>He's, he's been</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:16:57</time>
<p>in, he's been in charge of this unit for quite a long time.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:00</time>
<p>So strong Vincent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:01</time>
<p>Very familiar and proven with, with Chamberlain and Fredericksburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:05</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:05</time>
<p>And so Chancellorville that these, these guys had already</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:08</time>
<p>been fighting together mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:09</time>
<p>for, you know, weeks if not months.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:11</time>
<p>And, and longer than that.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:12</time>
<p>So these, the men like from Chamberlain and everyone else there trusted Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:19</time>
<p>And knew.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:20</time>
<p>Trusted their leader, right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:21</time>
<p>Trusted, strong, Vincent to be like, we trust him enough.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:24</time>
<p>He's been successful enough that we're gonna stay here.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:27</time>
<p>We're gonna hold this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:28</time>
<p>line.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:29</time>
<p>And I think it goes to show too, he, they're holding the line to the extent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:33</time>
<p>where they're running out of ammunition and they're fixing bayonets.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:36</time>
<p>Yeah, I mean, that's, that's not something that you do just because you're like,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:39</time>
<p>yeah, I think this is a strategic spot.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:41</time>
<p>This is like, you hold this or we lose it all.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:44</time>
<p>Yeah,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:45</time>
<p>exactly.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:45</time>
<p>And that's, that's exactly what happened.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:47</time>
<p>They never, the rebels were never able to advance.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:50</time>
<p>They held the line, and even though strong Vincent is, is injured early</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:17:54</time>
<p>and brought to the back of the line and the rest of his brigade don't give up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:00</time>
<p>They all stand their positions.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:02</time>
<p>I don't know.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:02</time>
<p>You know, you can say you were inspired by your leader.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:04</time>
<p>We talk about George Washington leading from the front a lot.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:07</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:07</time>
<p>And the inspiration that Vincent gave to his men with, getting up</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:12</time>
<p>there with the writing crop and saying, don't give her an inch boys.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:14</time>
<p>Don't give her an inch.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:15</time>
<p>And then getting injured.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:16</time>
<p>A lot of people might have felt like my.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:19</time>
<p>Boss, my leader, it just got injured.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:21</time>
<p>I'm gonna fight for him.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:23</time>
<p>I'm going to defend him.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:24</time>
<p>I'm gonna protect him</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:25</time>
<p>. We do visit him in this, his final resting place.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:28</time>
<p>He's, yeah, he's an Erie.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:29</time>
<p>Erie.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:29</time>
<p>He's brought back to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:30</time>
<p>Erie.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:30</time>
<p>He's, he's buried in Erie with a bunch.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:32</time>
<p>He's like a family plot.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:33</time>
<p>Yeah, it's a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:33</time>
<p>family plot.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:34</time>
<p>His wife was pregnant at the time, but she has the little girl, but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:37</time>
<p>the little girl doesn't live past the age of one cuz of sickness.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:40</time>
<p>Her name is Blanche.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:41</time>
<p>She's, he's buried right beside her.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:42</time>
<p>And then his wife never remar.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:45</time>
<p>She dies in 1914, so he's buried between the two of them.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:49</time>
<p>But his grave, if you watch our video, it is.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:54</time>
<p>Honored.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:55</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:55</time>
<p>It is an honored grave.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:18:56</time>
<p>He has a gar, he has the, the, the Grand Army of the Republic Star.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:01</time>
<p>He has medals on it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:02</time>
<p>He had a ton of pennies.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:04</time>
<p>He,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:04</time>
<p>he, he was actually, you can tell in the Erie area.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:07</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:07</time>
<p>He was one of those famous historical figures Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:10</time>
<p>That people just knew about.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:11</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:11</time>
<p>, they learned about kind of what he did</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:12</time>
<p>at, well, there was a high school name, strong Vincent High School.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:15</time>
<p>That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:15</time>
<p>That's where every, if you live in eer, epa, you went to</p>
<p></p>

<p>Strong Vincent High School.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:18</time>
<p>It is now strong.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:19</time>
<p>Vincent Middle School.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:21</time>
<p>, but it was the high school for about 70 years.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:24</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:24</time>
<p>And now it's the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:25</time>
<p>middle school.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:26</time>
<p>I remember we actually when.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:28</time>
<p>. It's either the first video or second video initially came out.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:31</time>
<p>People started commenting who had gone to Strong Vincent High School.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:35</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:35</time>
<p>Eventually we got comments from people who had lived in e epa,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:39</time>
<p>you know, and grown up there and actually attended that high school.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:42</time>
<p>And, and there were a couple folks who said, Hey, I never knew this much about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:45</time>
<p>Strong Vincent, thank you so much Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:47</time>
<p>For making this video.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:49</time>
<p>I just think he's, I mean, I don't wanna like be crass, but I think he's all.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:53</time>
<p>Badass.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:54</time>
<p>And he looks cool.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:55</time>
<p>If you can look at our videos and look at the pictures.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:19:57</time>
<p>He looks like a confident cool guy.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:00</time>
<p>Yeah, and even there's testimony of how he was, they said he</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:03</time>
<p>was a big gentleman, but quiet.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:07</time>
<p>I just think more people need to know who he is because really he could have changed</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:12</time>
<p>his decision making, if or lack thereof, could have changed the entire outcome</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:17</time>
<p>of Gettysburg, which could have changed the entire outcome of the Civil War.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:22</time>
<p>So a lawyer.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:23</time>
<p>from Erie, Pennsylvania.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:24</time>
<p>When you think Josh Chamberlain, I want you to think of strong Vincent,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:28</time>
<p>because Chamberlain survives.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:30</time>
<p>We always talk about this.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:31</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:31</time>
<p>Chamberlain survives.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:32</time>
<p>He gets to tell his story and Vincent doesn't.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:35</time>
<p>Who knows how much higher he would've went, but.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:39</time>
<p>I just, I'm so honored to, for him to be our real first video</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:43</time>
<p>and to still tell his story.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:45</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:45</time>
<p>he's, one of those gems that you unearth and the more you learn about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:48</time>
<p>this person, the, the, the more inspired this more inspired that you get.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:53</time>
<p>So as we talk about strong Vincent, you, you think back and there are so</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:20:57</time>
<p>many heroes throughout history that receive recognition for their heroic.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:03</time>
<p>in the United States, we look back on our relatively short history compared to other</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:07</time>
<p>countries and nations around the world.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:09</time>
<p>We talk about larger than life characters like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:11</time>
<p>George Washington,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:12</time>
<p>Abraham Lincoln,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:13</time>
<p>Ulysses S, grant</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:15</time>
<p>General Douglas MacArthur,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:16</time>
<p>buzz Aldrin.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:18</time>
<p>I bet you can name a hero across any age of American history but little.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:25</time>
<p>Do many folks know of the pivotal role..</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:28</time>
<p>That a lawyer from Waterford, Pennsylvania played in the American Civil War.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:34</time>
<p>This lawyer served in the Army and took initiative to hold the line at Gettysburg.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:40</time>
<p>No, he didn't charge with anyone with bayonets himself.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:43</time>
<p>But how could a soldier not be inspired by a colonel rallying</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:49</time>
<p>his troops from the front yelling?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:50</time>
<p>Don't give him an inch, boys.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:52</time>
<p>Don't give him an inch..</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Speaker:</cite>
<time>00:21:55</time>
