<p>They established the A P O.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:02</time>
<p>Which we now know if you're military.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:04</time>
<p>Oh, they actually</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:04</time>
<p>like the, yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:05</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:06</time>
<p>Oh wow.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:06</time>
<p>So they established this a p O system interest, which makes which</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:09</time>
<p>it easier to disseminate mail.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:10</time>
<p>Yeah, I think it's like army post office, right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:12</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:00:12</time>
<p>And then when they are done in England, they move on to France.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:25</time>
<p>Welcome to Talk With History.</p>
<p></p>

<cite>Scott:</cite>

<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:47</time>
<p>Okay?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:48</time>
<p>Did you know.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:49</time>
<p>That the first ever successful rebrand in history was figured out</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:54</time>
<p>by Frederick the Great in 1756.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:57</time>
<p>Only because you told me that's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:00:59</time>
<p>I did tell you because it's in our newsletter.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:01</time>
<p>So we go into how this ruler had to outwit his people just to keep</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:05</time>
<p>them from starving in our most recent walk with History newsletter.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:09</time>
<p>So if you're interested in that kind of stuff and you want a little</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:11</time>
<p>bit more history, you can visit history newsletter.com and sign</p>

<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:19</time>
<p>Videos and podcast recommendations.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:21</time>
<p>That's history newsletter.com.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:26</time>
<p>All right, so we went to Washington, DC not too long ago, visited some</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:31</time>
<p>friends, and we went over based on the recommendation from one</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:35</time>
<p>of our listeners to the National Historic, it's like a national park.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:42</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:42</time>
<p>Place for Mary McLeod Bethune.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:44</time>
<p>Who's Mary McLeod Bethune.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:01:45</time>
<p>And why'd we go over</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:01:46</time>
<p>there?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:01:47</time>
<p>Sure.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:01:47</time>
<p>So we went to the Mary McLeod Bethune Council house located</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:01:51</time>
<p>at 1318 Vermont Avenue, and we went there because she is just.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:01:59</time>
<p>She's an amazing African American woman in American history.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:03</time>
<p>She did a lot of things that people don't really know, and even when we met</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:07</time>
<p>with the National Park Service Guides there, they're surprised at how people</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:12</time>
<p>don't know who she is and because of all the stuff that she's done.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:15</time>
<p>And</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:15</time>
<p>to be honest, we didn't really know.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:17</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:17</time>
<p>So we had actually gone over there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:19</time>
<p>Assuming we were going to learn more about the six Triple eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:23</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:23</time>
<p>So the six eight is, was brought up on our radar because Tyler Perry is making</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:29</time>
<p>a movie about the six Triple eight and the six Triple eight was an Army World</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:32</time>
<p>War ii, army B Postal Battalion of all</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:36</time>
<p>African</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:36</time>
<p>American women, of all African American women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:38</time>
<p>Tyler Perry is making this movie, and so somebody brought it up to us mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:41</time>
<p>In a comment, said, Hey, you guys should go check out.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:43</time>
<p>You know this house that kind of covers the six Triple eight and it didn't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:46</time>
<p>really cover the six triple eight at all.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:02:48</time>
<p>It was more about Mary McCloud Bethune, who was instrumental in creating</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:51</time>
<p>that.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:52</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:52</time>
<p>So she is, um, she started the head, the National Council of Negro Women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:02:59</time>
<p>That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:00</time>
<p>And it's very interesting how these.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:03</time>
<p>Blocks get put into place for her to be influential during this time.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:08</time>
<p>She's born July 10th, 1875, so she's born in the late 18 hundreds.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:12</time>
<p>So her parents are former enslaves and they end up being sharecroppers, and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:17</time>
<p>she's like the 15th of 17 children.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:19</time>
<p>It's crazy.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:20</time>
<p>It's crazy, but she is very smart, even as a child.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:25</time>
<p>And so they're, she's the one that, that they push towards education and she</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:29</time>
<p>gets a college education and she goes down to Florida and she starts a school</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:35</time>
<p>in Daytona for African American girls.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:39</time>
<p>And it's there that she starts.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:41</time>
<p>Her work and her influence goes to a woman's rally, like a woman's meeting,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:49</time>
<p>and she's alive during the time of women getting the right to vote.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:52</time>
<p>That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:53</time>
<p>But we talk about this before, just because women got the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:03:55</time>
<p>right to vote doesn't mean all women got the right to vote.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:58</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:03:59</time>
<p>Remind me when, what years those, the suffrage movement was.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:02</time>
<p>Well, the suffrage movement is a very long time.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:04</time>
<p>It's about 1880s, all the way to the right to vote in 1920.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:09</time>
<p>Okay.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:10</time>
<p>But, but during, but women, but African American women are</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:15</time>
<p>not part of that conversation.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:16</time>
<p>That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:16</time>
<p>And that's.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:17</time>
<p>What?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:18</time>
<p>She goes to a rally and she gets very upset that African American women aren't</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:23</time>
<p>being represented and she kindies a kindred spirit in Eleanor Roosevelt.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:28</time>
<p>That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:29</time>
<p>Who also feels the same way that you can't be just representing</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:33</time>
<p>one uh group of women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:35</time>
<p>When you ask for women getting the right to vote, it needs to be all</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:40</time>
<p>women getting the right to vote, right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:43</time>
<p>So they become friends.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:45</time>
<p>And so in 1935 when Roosevelt is president, he, Eleanor</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:51</time>
<p>is very influential.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:51</time>
<p>And you would like to have this lady as a advisor for you, for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:04:57</time>
<p>African-American women, for African-American, just in general</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:01</time>
<p>diversity, influence, representation.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:04</time>
<p>And so he, he does put her on his council.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:07</time>
<p>That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:07</time>
<p>And how is very.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:10</time>
<p>I, I honestly was pretty surprised by that FDRs is given a lot of credit as this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:14</time>
<p>president who carries us through World War II and was in office for quite some time.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:19</time>
<p>But to have that recommendation to him and think about Eleanor Roosevelt, she</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:25</time>
<p>really pushed the envelope sometimes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:26</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:27</time>
<p>Like how we talked about in Tus with the Tuskegee Airman, the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:29</time>
<p>Tuskegee Airmen, she had the Tuskegee airmen like fly her around.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:32</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:32</time>
<p>When nobody there expected or wanted that to happen.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:35</time>
<p>She's like, Nope, you're gonna take me up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:36</time>
<p>We're gonna fly around.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:37</time>
<p>So she does that.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:38</time>
<p>She probably walks back to, gets back to the White House after this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:41</time>
<p>rally and tells her husband and she's just like, I met someone.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:43</time>
<p>She needs to be on your council.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:05:45</time>
<p>And he's probably just like, yes, dear.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:47</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:48</time>
<p>So it's in 1935.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:49</time>
<p>She founds, she founds and becomes the first president of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:52</time>
<p>National Council of Negro Women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:54</time>
<p>And that's the same year President Roosevelt brings her to Washington as</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:05:57</time>
<p>special advisor on Minority Affairs.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:00</time>
<p>And like you to say with Eleanor Roosevelt, she's very influential in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:03</time>
<p>all people who are underrepresented.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:06</time>
<p>Like she's gonna push for women to fly during the war.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:09</time>
<p>She pushes for African American men to fly during the war, and now she's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:11</time>
<p>pushing for African American women to be represented in the war effort as well.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:17</time>
<p>And that's where.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:19</time>
<p>Mary McLeod Bethune is gonna be her connection to the six triple eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:25</time>
<p>That's where it</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:25</time>
<p>comes in.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:32</time>
<p>So that's where it comes in.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:33</time>
<p>So when you look up six triple eight DC with like we did and her house</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:39</time>
<p>came up, this is the connection because she personally chooses the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:44</time>
<p>first 40 African American women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:48</time>
<p>To go into the army during the war.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:06:51</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:51</time>
<p>So it, that was one of the things I thought that was really cool.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:54</time>
<p>It's the six triple eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:56</time>
<p>There's a reason that they're making a movie about it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:58</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:06:58</time>
<p>There's a reason that Tyler Perry's doing this, and that they're getting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:00</time>
<p>some pretty big name actresses into this, because their story is pretty incredible.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:04</time>
<p>But when you trace that further back, we, we are want to do Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:07</time>
<p>Here on Walk With History, Mary McLeod Bethune.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:11</time>
<p>She was the one who advocated, Hey, no, women need to be a part of this war too.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:16</time>
<p>We're not just gonna sit here at home and African American women</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:19</time>
<p>need to be allowed to serve.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:07:21</time>
<p>And she p and she personally handpicked the first 40,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:25</time>
<p>so she handpicked the first 40.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:26</time>
<p>And think of it a lot like when we did the Tuskegee Airmen, right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:28</time>
<p>Like the reason why these Tuskegee airmen were so effective as pilots</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:34</time>
<p>is cuz they're the best of the best.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:36</time>
<p>They're making it so hard for these men to get into the flight program.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:40</time>
<p>They have to be college educated, they have to have proven this,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:43</time>
<p>they have to be physically fit.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:44</time>
<p>Once those men are meeting all those wicked.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:46</time>
<p>And they go through flight training.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:48</time>
<p>They're great pilots because they're the best of the best.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:51</time>
<p>And the same thing is true for these 40 women that she's choosing as</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:54</time>
<p>these first 40 representation into the army for African American women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:07:58</time>
<p>These are graduate student level educated women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:02</time>
<p>Yeah, and I'm glad you brought that up, Kate, because there's a</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:05</time>
<p>couple really classic pictures.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:07</time>
<p>If you look up the six triple eight, six and then three eights, right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:11</time>
<p>The 6 6 6 8 88 6 8 88, 688.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:16</time>
<p>Six thousand six thousand eight hundred eighty eight Postal</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:19</time>
<p>battalion six triple eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:20</time>
<p>That's the easier way to look it up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:22</time>
<p>But if you look up the six triple eight, there's a couple very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:24</time>
<p>classic pictures mm-hmm that you'll find in black and white.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:26</time>
<p>And it's the African American women standing formation being</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:29</time>
<p>inspected by major charity atoms now major charity atoms.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:33</time>
<p>I, if I remember correctly, I read that she was actually like, she had</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:38</time>
<p>her master's or she was like, like more highly educated than the average</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:42</time>
<p>person that was already coming in.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:43</time>
<p>She had</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:43</time>
<p>her master's, she was studying her master's and it was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:45</time>
<p>the school that shall not be named.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:47</time>
<p>Oh, Ohio State.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:48</time>
<p>Was that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:48</time>
<p>SI state?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:49</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:50</time>
<p>That's</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:51</time>
<p>too funny.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:51</time>
<p>So she's actually the first African American woman to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:55</time>
<p>receive an Army commission.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:56</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:56</time>
<p>Which</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:08:57</time>
<p>I, I just thought was so cool.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:08:59</time>
<p>And she's gonna be the commander of the six Triple eight of the six Triple</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:02</time>
<p>eight She hand chosen by Mary McLeod.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:04</time>
<p>The Yeah, that's what's so cool about it all.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:07</time>
<p>And</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:07</time>
<p>so if you look at, at our video that we made for this, the thumbnail,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:11</time>
<p>I tried to bring all the elements out.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:13</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:14</time>
<p>And it's hard to do good thumbnails.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:15</time>
<p>I wouldn't say I'm the best at 'em, but this particular one I</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:18</time>
<p>show Mary, you know, the major charity Adams, you know, inspecting.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:22</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:22</time>
<p>You know, the six triple eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:24</time>
<p>And then on the other side is Tyler Perrick.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:26</time>
<p>Right?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:26</time>
<p>So then, and now, and then Mary McLeod Bethune kind of sitting there in the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:29</time>
<p>middle because it really was because of this woman and all the other things</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:33</time>
<p>that we'll talk a little bit more about.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:35</time>
<p>But I, we wanna have time on this podcast.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:37</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:37</time>
<p>To cover everything that she did is incredible.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:39</time>
<p>Incredible.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:09:39</time>
<p>So let's talk a little</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:40</time>
<p>bit about the six Triple Eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:45</time>
<p>Then we'll circle back about the house Sure.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:47</time>
<p>And what the house, and then we'll talk more about Mary Cloud Beth's life.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:51</time>
<p>Sure.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:51</time>
<p>Okay.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:52</time>
<p>So the six triple eight, just so we have an understanding of what they are.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:55</time>
<p>They were brought together because of this huge backlog of mail.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:09:59</time>
<p>Service member mail during World War ii, 65,000 pieces of mail that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:05</time>
<p>never got delivered, warehouses full of mail in England and France,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:11</time>
<p>and so they established the six triple eight in March of 1945.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:15</time>
<p>So if you think.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:16</time>
<p>The end of the war is coming, although people don't know that.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:19</time>
<p>And Charity Adams is selected as their commander in actually February of 45.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:26</time>
<p>So she gets these women together, they get over to Birmingham,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:29</time>
<p>France in March of 1945.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:32</time>
<p>And immediately they, this 850 of them, they separate mail.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:38</time>
<p>They get into these warehouses and they start to separate</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:41</time>
<p>mail into A, B, C, and D.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:43</time>
<p>Levels of where it's going.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:44</time>
<p>And the mail has been kept in these warehouses.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:48</time>
<p>Some of it has been destroyed by rats.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:49</time>
<p>Christmas packages, some's been there for years.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:52</time>
<p>And so they repackaged that mail and it's freezing cold and they're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:10:56</time>
<p>wearing like ski clothes and fatigues and they work three rotating eight</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:00</time>
<p>hour ships, seven days a week.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:03</time>
<p>And what they were told was gonna take 'em six months.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:05</time>
<p>It took 'em three months.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:06</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:06</time>
<p>And they got all that mail out and delivered.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:08</time>
<p>They established the A P O.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:10</time>
<p>Which we now know if you're</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:11:12</time>
<p>military.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:11:12</time>
<p>Oh, they actually like the, yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:11:14</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:11:14</time>
<p>Oh, wow.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:11:14</time>
<p>So they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:14</time>
<p>established this APO system Oh.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:16</time>
<p>Interest, which makes, makes it easier to disseminate mail.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:19</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:19</time>
<p>I think it's like army post office or something.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:21</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:21</time>
<p>And then when they are done in England, they move on to France to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:24</time>
<p>another, again, warehouse full of mail.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:27</time>
<p>Told it's gonna take 'em six months to do, take some three months to do.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:31</time>
<p>And they're able to disseminate this male quickly and effectively.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:34</time>
<p>And what's interesting about the six triple eight, which I wanted to say</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:37</time>
<p>too, is they're very self-contained.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:40</time>
<p>Battalion.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:41</time>
<p>They were, there's no male counterpart.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:43</time>
<p>Usually there's a lot of male counterpart when you have a female battalion.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:46</time>
<p>But they did all the pieces of it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:48</time>
<p>They did all the pieces.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:49</time>
<p>They were their own mps.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:51</time>
<p>Their own chaplains, their own M W R, so their own pao.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:11:56</time>
<p>So they're doing their own dances and their own mess cooks.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:00</time>
<p>They're very self-contained battalion.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:02</time>
<p>So you think this is all African-American women who are very</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:05</time>
<p>much a self-contained army unit.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:08</time>
<p>And what this does is with all this.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:12</time>
<p>Racism and people who are very skeptical of their ability.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:17</time>
<p>It shows how effective they are and just how well oiled their</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:22</time>
<p>machine is to get this all done.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:24</time>
<p>And.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:26</time>
<p>I know you think maybe male.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:28</time>
<p>Wait, what's the significance of male?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:30</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:31</time>
<p>I got a good thing going.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:41</time>
<p>We have talked about this before as service members and people</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:45</time>
<p>who fought in World War II and war in general, you don't.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:49</time>
<p>No, the end of your time, yeah, you're being drafted to war and the end of</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:54</time>
<p>your time is you fight till you win or you fight until you are killed.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:58</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:12:59</time>
<p>So that's basically what happens.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:01</time>
<p>And so people are in fighting for years.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:04</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:04</time>
<p>And so when they're getting packages in mail, I always say, you've</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:08</time>
<p>reminded of what you're fighting</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:10</time>
<p>for and it's really your only tie to home.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:13</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:14</time>
<p>These folks weren't getting phone calls out on the front lines.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:17</time>
<p>No.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:17</time>
<p>Right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:17</time>
<p>Not with everything that was going on.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:19</time>
<p>So mail was the way of communication even when we were in the Navy, right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:23</time>
<p>On a ship.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:24</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:24</time>
<p>That was like one of the best things.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:26</time>
<p>I know it was right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:26</time>
<p>Days of the mail was coming in and you had.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:30</time>
<p>You know, deck hair package that your mom put together.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:32</time>
<p>I know.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:32</time>
<p>And just sent you a bunch of junk food and magazines, DVDs back in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:35</time>
<p>the day and that was so great.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:37</time>
<p>That was such a spirit lifter.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:38</time>
<p>It was so great.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:13:39</time>
<p>It was, was</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:39</time>
<p>so great.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:40</time>
<p>And people would send you cards and pictures and just all those things that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:44</time>
<p>you would pass around and show each other.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:46</time>
<p>Yeah, because your package lifts up other people as well.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:49</time>
<p>And so for them to get all of this stuff out, and like I said, even the Christmas</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:53</time>
<p>packages that had been destroyed, they'd be packaged and make sure they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:57</time>
<p>still got to the service members.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:13:58</time>
<p>So what they did for morale is camp can't be measured.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:03</time>
<p>And I think that's very important to bring up.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:05</time>
<p>So that's about the six Triple eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:06</time>
<p>So when you see the show, just the movie, just remember it's very self-contained.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:11</time>
<p>They're gonna start the APO system.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:13</time>
<p>They get out there at March in 1945.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:16</time>
<p>They stay out there for about a year.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:19</time>
<p>It's disbanded.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:20</time>
<p>In March of 1946,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:30</time>
<p>Roosevelt wanted to bring her up to be on his council for Diversity</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:34</time>
<p>affairs, and so she moves into that house that is the house for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:39</time>
<p>the National Park Service in 1943.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:42</time>
<p>Okay.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:43</time>
<p>And we, I had asked the questions, well, how.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:45</time>
<p>What kind of neighborhood was the best?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:47</time>
<p>Cause this is a nice Victorian house and he's, oh yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:51</time>
<p>People don't really like her here.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:53</time>
<p>She had a hard time because it's a nice area of dc but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:57</time>
<p>she lived there for six years.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:14:59</time>
<p>And that house was the headquarters of the Council for Negro Women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:05</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:05</time>
<p>And it's, it'll stay the headquarters until 1966.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:09</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:09</time>
<p>So even after, I think she passes in the fifties.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:12</time>
<p>She passes May</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:13</time>
<p>eight, 18th,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:14</time>
<p>1955.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:15</time>
<p>But it, it's, it stays a headquarters in, in later on.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:16</time>
<p>It's actually used for some pretty significant</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:18</time>
<p>events.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:19</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:20</time>
<p>I, I know it in 1966, it's, it's Masa headquarters for the National Council of.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:26</time>
<p>Uh, Negro women, but it's used to help plan the march on dc.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:31</time>
<p>Yeah, that was cool.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:32</time>
<p>And when you think of the march on DC I'm talking about Martin Luther King.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:35</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:36</time>
<p>And the, I have a dream speech, so they use this house, so if you wanna visit</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:40</time>
<p>this house, and the table there is where they say people met and they talked about</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:44</time>
<p>the, everything they discussed, the music.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:47</time>
<p>And the other speeches that'll happen and the other events that</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:50</time>
<p>they'll do, all the logistics that go planning of Big March, like</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:53</time>
<p>that, it's not, people just don't show up for something like that.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:55</time>
<p>Like they actually had to plan it in advance.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:15:56</time>
<p>They didn't plan</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:56</time>
<p>it So that the March on Washington was planned in the house.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:15:59</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:00</time>
<p>So the house was also, it had a chandelier from the White House.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:05</time>
<p>That's cool.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:06</time>
<p>That she received from Truman, I believe.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:08</time>
<p>Yep.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:09</time>
<p>And then if you go upstairs, you see her bedroom at her office.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:13</time>
<p>And you see like a big working room cuz she ran the council there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:17</time>
<p>And then on the third floor it was basically a safe house.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:20</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:20</time>
<p>They, it wasn't open to the public, wasn't open for the public.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:22</time>
<p>That's where the National Park Service offices are.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:24</time>
<p>But I found it so interesting.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:25</time>
<p>She ran a safe house for African American women.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:27</time>
<p>They could come anytime and stay there and she kept no record of who stayed.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:32</time>
<p>And that's why the National Park Service can't tell you whoever stayed there, but</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:36</time>
<p>there were always women there and able to use it to get back on their feet.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:41</time>
<p>Or to get away from abusive relationships, whatever they</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:43</time>
<p>needed that was available to them.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:16:50</time>
<p>Oh.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:00</time>
<p>The more I read about Mary McCloud Bethune was I was just like,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:04</time>
<p>I just, my jaw kept dropping further and further and closer to the floor</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:08</time>
<p>each time I read more about hers.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:09</time>
<p>I mean, she was so influential and did so much.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:12</time>
<p>She even established what's now a pretty well established college in Florida.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:16</time>
<p>Yeah, and I think you even pointed out, That she in, it's either in Congress or</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:22</time>
<p>in the, in the Congressional buildings.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:23</time>
<p>In the Capitol buildings.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:24</time>
<p>There's two statues that represent each state.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:27</time>
<p>Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:27</time>
<p>And she be, they made her one of the statues</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:30</time>
<p>For Florida.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:30</time>
<p>For Florida, yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:31</time>
<p>Her and her and her college robe and, and cap.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:36</time>
<p>But in, she, so when I said in 1904, how she established that school for</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:40</time>
<p>girls in Daytona, Bethune Cookman College, and at the time, This is in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:46</time>
<p>Jacksonville, and the school became accredited and it officially changed</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:51</time>
<p>his name to Bethune Cookman College, and Bethune became the first African American</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:17:55</time>
<p>woman to serve as a college president.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:17:57</time>
<p>Yeah, it, she did so many firsts and she pushed the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:02</time>
<p>envelope to start so many firsts.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:04</time>
<p>Mm-hmm.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:04</time>
<p>It really was incredible.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:06</time>
<p>Talk about someone who was born, you know, Not long after the Civil War</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:12</time>
<p>in the 1875 and then living right up to really the kind of heart of the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:17</time>
<p>Civil Rights movement right up to it.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:19</time>
<p>And she was this kind of key, pivotal figure that was around</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:24</time>
<p>for all these events and.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:27</time>
<p>Established colleges in schools and was the first African</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:30</time>
<p>American college president Yes.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:32</time>
<p>And was the first one to get African American women into the armed services</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:36</time>
<p>and was the first one to select.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:37</time>
<p>It was just absolutely incredible.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:18:39</time>
<p>I was, it's incredible.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:39</time>
<p>Blown away.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:40</time>
<p>And so after she's done in DC and she retires from that being the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:44</time>
<p>president of the Council of Migo women, she goes back to Florida.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:47</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:47</time>
<p>And she, she retires basically at the college, becomes</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:50</time>
<p>president of that college.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:52</time>
<p>And then she spends the remainder of her life there at her home and</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:55</time>
<p>basically her retreat, and it's now known as the Mary Bethune Foundational</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:18:59</time>
<p>National Historic Landmark.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:01</time>
<p>And that's where she's buried as well?</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:04</time>
<p>Yeah, it was.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:05</time>
<p>It's the, you know, We're making a big deal about her because</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:09</time>
<p>I think she is a big deal.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:11</time>
<p>But it's funny because the site in dc, this National Park site,</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:15</time>
<p>it's not very well developed.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:17</time>
<p>No.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:18</time>
<p>And it, and we were very surprised.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:19</time>
<p>And even the needs more recognition, I'll call 'em the park rangers</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:22</time>
<p>that we're working there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:22</time>
<p>Yeah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:22</time>
<p>They even said like, Hey, please come in and film.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:25</time>
<p>And this site is small, but it's right in the heart of dc.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:19:28</time>
<p>It's not hard to get to.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:29</time>
<p>It's not hard to get to.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:30</time>
<p>And I think it's such a big part of American History.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:32</time>
<p>Plus it's a great place for research because the National Council of Negro</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:37</time>
<p>Women contains the National Archives for Black Women's History, and it's the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:41</time>
<p>only institution in the United States solely dedicated to that purpose.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:45</time>
<p>That's right.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:46</time>
<p>Um, so that is all housed there.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:48</time>
<p>So that's another thing, the archive.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:51</time>
<p>The research that you can do and I felt the big just being in that room</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:19:57</time>
<p>and they had some artifacts in there and they were gonna put more stuff in</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:00</time>
<p>there, but you're around her artifacts.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:02</time>
<p>She has a cane given to her by Roosevelt, like you're around the</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:06</time>
<p>artifacts there in that house.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:07</time>
<p>So it's very cool to visit.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:09</time>
<p>It's free to visit visits, national Park Service, even if you wanna see the table</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:13</time>
<p>where they plan the march on Washington.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:15</time>
<p>But when the movie comes out, I think people will wanna know more</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:18</time>
<p>connection to the building blocks.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:21</time>
<p>To put that battalion in place to do the amazing thing they did during World</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:20:25</time>
<p>War ii, and she is the cornerstone</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:37</time>
<p>and I saw.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:38</time>
<p>On.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:39</time>
<p>I was trying to pull information on who's gonna be in this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:41</time>
<p>movie for six triple eight.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:42</time>
<p>I thought I saw Oprah was supposed to be one of the cast members.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:46</time>
<p>No.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:46</time>
<p>And she would be the perfect person to play Mary McLeod Bethune.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:49</time>
<p>She would, she's not sorry.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:51</time>
<p>Oprah.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:52</time>
<p>Um, if you're ever watching this, So I don't think you're at the point</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:55</time>
<p>where you're gonna be playing someone who's serving overseas as part of this</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:20:58</time>
<p>World War II unit, but she, she would, most likely, she would be great to</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:01</time>
<p>be on the council choosing the women to be the first board.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:04</time>
<p>A hundred</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:04</time>
<p>percent.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:04</time>
<p>She could be.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:05</time>
<p>Mary McLeod Bethune.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:06</time>
<p>Very excited to see the six Triple eight movie.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:09</time>
<p>I think it's supposed to be a Netflix movie coming out.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:11</time>
<p>Um, I'm not sure when.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:12</time>
<p>I think they've only recently started filming</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Jenn:</cite>
<time>00:21:17</time>
<p>everything that could do.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:23</time>
<p>I hope you enjoyed our exploration of the remarkable life</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:27</time>
<p>and enduring impact of Mary McLeod by.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:30</time>
<p>Born during a time of racial segregation, Bethune defied the odds and became</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:35</time>
<p>a trailblazing educator, political leader, and civil rights activist.</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:40</time>
<p>Beth's influence extended beyond her institution as she advised multiple</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:45</time>
<p>US presidents on minority affairs and became a powerful voice for equality</p>
<p></p>
<cite>Scott:</cite>
<time>00:21:49</time>
<p>and justice with just a small part of her impact resulting in the first</p>
<p></p>
